I didn't really know where else on the internet to put this, so I decided SMW central was my best bet. I've been a closet rom hacker for some time now and I felt that with Mario turning 35 and all that I should finally show the world a hack I made of SMB 1.
This is a level hack - no changes to graphics or music - and I made that choice deliberately: I really just wanted to sit down and focus on the question of what makes good level design. Every stage has been completely remade from scratch, and I aimed for a difficulty somewhat higher than Lost Levels, verging on kaizo-y with some of the tricks towards then end (as much as vanilla Mario 1 can be...). My design ethos was to make sure that every item, coin, and enemy was placed meaningfully, and that powerups and lives should matter to the player. Some moments work better than others, but I think in general I was pretty successful. I suspect it may also make for a halfway decent speedrun too, but I can't really speak to that.
I'm very interested to hear any feedback / criticism / impressions, so please share your thoughts! Save-states shouldn't be necessary, but it does get pretty tough around world 5 so expect a few game overs. Hold A while pressing Start on the title screen after you die to retry from that world, if you didn't already know.
Here's a mediafire link to the ips:
Oh, and uh btw, minor language warning at the very end - I expect the text should match the jubilation of the player, so believe me when I say it's justified.
