💯 JDC's 😲 NEW⚠️HACK 🔥

Hello everyone. I've risen from the graveyard and gotten back into SMW Hacking after an extended break. I've started a new project yesterday and have made reasonable progress having completed approximately 1.5 levels.

It's intended to be a fairly straightforward hack, with a minimalistic story, and one that's intended to emulate official Mario/DKC level design and ethos.

Each level across the themed worlds will be jam-packed with a plethora of secrets including 5 Yoshi Coins, a rare hidden 1-up and occasionally, a secret exit.

Fungi Frolic
Complete Level Video
The mushrooms are springy and will bounce Mario, and sprites into the air.

Melancholy Mine
A cave level mainly utilising the carrot lift and timed platform sprites.

man i've heard stories about you and your site but never what exactly you did

Fungi Frolic looks like a nice use of the kishoutenketsu style of level making, exactly the kind of stage I'd make. The part where you went back for grab blocks repeatedly to take out Parakoopas felt unnecessary and really just dragged the video on lol

Overall, good job but I'd suggest adding this to the bounce blocks you used for the mushroom caps:
Code
LDA #$08
STA $1DFC

This makes it play the springboard sfx, place it after where it stores the rising value to Mario and the sprites' Y speed addresses. It just feels empty without it.

I can't say much about Melancholy Mine because of it being just images, but the overuse of skull blocks does lowkey ruin the aesthetic. I'd suggest replacing them with spikes and spikes with wood beam backgrounds.

Overall the stages remind me a bit of VIP6, mostly due to their pixel art style. Specifically, Sky Climbing, Twin Tower Fortress, Amethyst Tunnel and An Afternoon Walk, which all had similar art styles and seemed to be made by the same person. Sadly the VIP stages' level designs were weaker, focusing more on Haimari or TSC-esque marathon levels with high difficulty, which says something considering I love TSC's VIP output.

good luck bro

Some good suggestions, thanks!

Back in '11-'13 JDCGames started as a place to organise the collaboration hack I was running back then. It sort of evolved beyond that point and sustained its own community of ~30 active users. JDCGames Collab 1 did eventually get finished although unfortunately it's not the best hack ever as it suffers from a high/unfair difficulty spike.

The bounce blocks are a little janky and do need to be tweaked. Fireballs also run right through the block as if it were invisible. Good shout about the sound effect and I'll edit that in.

Yeah, I agree the skull blocks are lame. I did experiment with flipped Munchers and also spikes but they look worse. I made a small palette change incorporating red and blue shades of blocks to match the colours of the crystals in the level. I think this looks marginally better.

I've finished it now - except for some short playtesting and polishing. Here are some updated screenshots.

There are some creative ways I've used those two main platform sprites. It starts off simple in the 1st screenshot. The 2nd one shows Mario quickly moving up a section of platforms while avoiding straying too far right and hitting the skull blocks. The 3rd screenshot shows a section where you'll have to go left to access a bonus room & 1up. The final section of the level is a gauntlet where Mario has to traverse between several platforms while avoiding obstacles in his path. The secret exit to this level (not shown) requires Mario to use L/R to spawn/despawn platforms in a short puzzle.

I was raised on late 00s-early 10s Japanese hacks (VIP, ASPE, YEAH, Hyper) and I've recently started Quickie World (a Kaizo aimed at beginners) so don't worry about my resistance to batshit difficulty lol

Try to make act as 100? This will make it so that it acts like a ledge when it's not running code. If it bugs up and starts to not run the code you can just add the following to where ever the MarioFireball or its equivalent jumps to instead:
Code
LDY #$01
LDA #$00
STA $1693

It looks nice, the one tone aesthetic and choices look quite VVVVVV-ish on em, and by extent kind of an improved C64-ish look. The level seems to be developing nicely, keep it up. I like the bonus room entry challenge, personally.

A short preview onto the 3rd level I'm working on. This is an underwater level however, it will predominantly feature reskinned and unusual enemies not normally found in an underwater habitat, such as this boo ring shown.

I may change the BG as I'm not satisfied with it yet.
Hey, you're back! I never thought I'd see you around here again. I don't have much to say about the screens you've shown as they look good, but I am indeed curious about the Boo ring gimmick you have in mind for the water level. Nice to see you're still hacking.
Hey there, you're finally back.

I don't have many opinions on your screenshot, but they look pretty decent so far. Other than that, keep it up.
