I wanna get into forums, man!

(This post is somewhat messy, because a lot of this stuff i've been meaning to say for a pretty long time. Due to the metric crapload of text i've spewed onto here, i decided to post this as its own thread.)

TL;DR please help me i have no idea how to do anything

I've missed the good stuff of the internet. Now everything is discord. Wanna join a community? Discord. I don't like it tbh. Discord is fine, but this just seems more fun, dude.

I've had an account on this place for a pretty long time, but before now i've never posted anything at all. I think i made the account so i could join the discord server, which i left because discord servers make me super super anxious and stuff, especially ones with lotsa members.

Other than that i've tried the super mario forums, and i don't remember why i stopped using those. I figured i'll try here for a better shot.

Basically i wanna get le feel of tight−knit community. Is that something i can find in here? Like would i get to make friends by using a forum nowadays? Or is it just like, a mess of too much noise?

Am i even qualified to use this forum? I've never really gotten into forums before, and i've only beaten SMW once, and i haven't played any romhacks at all. So i guess no. What's some of the like, classic must-play SMW hacks i could play?

I actually don't even know if this whole post is acceptable forum behavior. is it? Like, i know this post isn't breaking any of the rules, but maybe i'm just being weird without realising. Maybe i posted this in the wrong section, or even in the wrong site. Inform me if i did and sorry if i did.

Here's hoping i get some replies that will put me on my path to un-noob myself, and maybe start using this forum and/or forums in general. Thank you if you reply! #w{=3} prolly not even gonna read this cause it's too long which i understand lmao

P.S. I remembered about this forum because of this stream so i went and played this romhack and i'm trynna beat it today so i guess i've played one hack now lmao
Hey there, welcome to SMWC! #tb{:)}

Don't worry about being a noob to the forums - everyone's a little unsure of what to do when they're new, and if you stick around you'll get comfy soon enough. Not to worry about having too little SMW experience either - the last time I beat the original game must have been a decade ago, some people are just here to talk and have never played hacks, and some people come here not knowing what hacking even is. You're good.

The problem with the forums nowadays probably isn't too much noise though - things have gotten a lot quieter here after Discord became a thing. I agree that can be a messy place when you're new though, and there's still a fair bit of activity in the forums especially in the "General Discussion" part.

Making a thread to introduce yourself is common, although the recommended thing to do is to post in the introductions thread, so chances are this will have to get closed when a mod sees it. Not a big deal though!

As for hacks to recommend, I've been out of touch for quite a while and I really mostly know the classics, so:

- Demo World: The Legend Continues is a hack made by the creator of Lunar Magic way back in the early 2000s, and it's still a fine demonstration of what LM can do (or could back then; it's more advanced now).
- The Second Reality Project (TSRP) was praised for its level design even in the 2000s. There's a sequel (TSRP2), a remake (TSRPR), and a remake of the sequel (TSRP2R). You can skip the non-remakes if you want.
- My favorite hacks from 2008-ish are Buried Treasure and The Tale of Elementia. They might not have aged well.
- SMWC has held a level design contest for the past handful of years, and the 7th, 8th and 9th contests had all the entries compiled into one single hack each. All of those are worth playing as examples of good modern "vanilla" (=no custom resources) level design. (The 2nd contest has also been retroactively compiled, and compilations for 11 and 12 are also in the works.)

So there you go! Not sure what prompted me to be so verbose, but hey.

tl;dr: welcome, enjoy your stay, you're fine

I agree with you - posting on a forum is just easier. It has less of that "presence" of an online chat that I agree is anxiety-inducing. The fact that forum posting is at your own pace enables you to be clearer with greater confidence the first time and I think is a better way to organize details.

SMWC has gotten extremely big since I joined. There was a time where the tight-knit presence could be felt on the board even without using IRC. Many people just lurk and I don't see as much engagement and open pal-around fun in threads as it used to be. However, growth is so steady and people are eager to get into things and still use the forum. I would say there is room for friendships to still happen, but much of the "established" community cannot be penetrated outside of that Discord server, but there are opportunities to form bonds with active users who have been here for a while if you get involved with feedback or assisting them in their works, or maintaining a friendly presence otherwise. Don't be surprised if they start asking you to join them on Discord eventually. (You can always just add friends and use DMs so the channel anxiety doesn't exist.)

Anyone is qualified to use the forum. No need to have any experience or even like Mario or ROM hack, though it is quite the place to land if it is your circumstance! The rules for conduct can be found in the side panel and unless you do something deliberately malicious, like scamming, posting warez and viruses, come out swinging at people, smut (this is a board full of kids,) stuff like that, you won't be instantly banned. There is always a process that begins with friendly guidance, then formal warnings.

As for must-plays: Return to Dinosaur Land is probably one of the oldest SMW hacks that have stood the test of time. I also really like Super Mario World: Master Quest series, the Kid Adventure series, The Second Reality Project series, Sicari & K-16, SMW 2+3, Quest on Full Moon Island, and if you are cool with harder non-Kaizo hacks, Super Mario Infinity, Yoshi's Strange Quest, and Devious Four Chronicles hacks are really good. Ghettoyouth's Panic in the Mushroom Kingdom hacks are very old classics too but there's a bit of blood and hidden hentai, if that stuff matters to you. Kitiku Mario World is worth a try as well, though not finished, because it is technically impressive with all the bosses from other games it has. Less known that I loved as one of my first SMW hacks I played too is RamzaNeko.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
Oh hey, two replies. Thanks both of you. I'm prolly gonna write all those titles down now so i'll get to playing those hacks. Might even start workin on my own hack eventually, but probably not.

Imma also take both your advice into consideration when i'm using this website. Is it a good idea if i just look around in the forums and respond to whatever catches my interest?

And to be honest what really made me anxious about discord servers is when i wasn't talking in them. #ab{:P} It was like oh no i'm not doing anything in the server even when i was literally away from my computer.

And also i kinda just like being verbose so this helps with that lol.

This question is more for later on if i'm still using the forum, but how do i do those things? I know that sounds like an obvious question with an obvious answer, but like really here. Aside from "say stuff in the forum".
Hello and welcome!

That's the gist of it, yes.

"Say stuff in the forum" should be a given #ab{:P} But: if you see a hack in progress or a finished hack and you want to praise it or point out the issues you have with it, then go ahead as often as necessary.
You can post anywhere you like, but, aside from the rules in the menu, each forum also has their own rules. Don't think anybody is not qualified to use the forums at all and don't worry about being overly verbose or something.

Will do that! Before i use the forums much more though i'm probably gonna clear out the newly padded out backlog that arised from all the recommendations from the last two replies.
if you want a tight knit community, why not try embroidery?

pun appreciation moment
Well, this is easily one of the most vibrant and personality-filled posts I've seen on this site in a while!

Welcome! Don't stress too much about seeming weird or awkward, SMWC is super friendly nowadays, so don't worry about being chased off the site because you used a three-syllable word or anything like that. Once you take some time to get used to the people here, I'm sure you'll fit right in. It's also a very active site, so I think it would be pretty hard to get bored here.

I agree with you about message boards, too - I like Discord a lot, but there's something rather cozy about having an independent corner of the internet, broken off of all those mainstream social media platforms, where you and your friends can just have your own little place to relax and converse. I hope you stick around.

(And yeah, I know my reply is late, but I'm an idiot and somehow didn't see this thread.)

Wow thanks! That's a compliment, right?

I've been doing this thing where i kinda just PM anybody who looks like a fun person. Is that weird? Haven't gotten very many re-replies, they might respond once but not after. I really need someone to tell honestly whether or not i'm being weird.

And y'know, it is nice to be using something that is mildly less likely to be out for my personal data.

It's actually kinda really nice to receive replies on something i posted several days ago.

It was supposed to be - sorry if it came out wrong.

Here's something I learned the hard way when I first joined: Don't take it personally if people aren't replying to your messages ("leaving you on read", so to speak). A lot of people here are way past their high school days, and are far too busy with college (or even careers/families!) to care enough to respond to every single private message they get. Additionally, I know a few people in particular (not naming names) who've said that they're outright uncomfortable with having idle chat with people through PMs for personal reasons, so there could be others like that as well. If someone doesn't respond, it doesn't necessarily mean that you're being weird.

Of course, that's not to say that you shouldn't message people at all, I'm just giving you a heads-up that it's not a big deal if someone doesn't seem like they're responding much. The people here are nice enough that you aren't going to be judged much, I promise :P
welcome 2 super mario's world, central dot internet

uh i don't really know what to say other than like just relax and don't be a butt. you'll probably do fine. you dont have to be a mario superfan to post here, im personally more into rpgs and the mario games i'd call myself a fan of are like, the two and a half maker games. the discord is more active than here, but some peeps still post on the forums on occasion. it's only Mostly Dead (man i need to watch the princess bride).

if you need help with hacking you can always check out smw hacking help and you should get a reply in under a couple of days. if you want to chat, general discussion gets quite a few posts daily. if you need help with a romhack youre playing, hack assistance thread is there too!

you seem friendshaped so rest assured you're chill in my eyes! #smrpg{mlem}

as for hacks i'd recommend, as the resident weeb i'd be remiss not to drop some jp goodness onto u.

you can find a lot of em here, since a lot of em were uploaded outside of SMWC due to strained relations in the past.

3000 Leagues in Search of Bowser (has a translation that might have aged a bit? no fix yet)
Gokudo Mario World
Hutuu Mario
Hyper Mari World 5 and 6 (have fixes, 6 has a translation, warning! super hard and kind of unfair at points!)
Scarlet Devil Mario 1 and 2 (really jank but charming, have fixes and translations)
Luigi's Adventure OSE, 2 (7 World demo), 3 OSE and 4 demo (probably run on accurate emulators?)
Mario X World SER, Deluxe, Bowser's Strike Back (have fixes)
VIP and Wall Mix 3-6 (6 can get unfair at times, have translations and fixes) (content warning for a lot of things, this was by 2channel, now 5channel)
Romancing Mario (has translation and fix)
Seawar Mario World
Sui Mario, Mario 2 and Luigi (have old translations, no fix)
SUPER (has fix and translation, super hard!)
Super ASPE Mario (has fix and translation on Talkhaus, content warning for a
rape
joke puzzle level)
Kouhai Mario 1&2 (Super black Mario) (warning hard, kind of jank)
Super Isikoro Mario World (latest version runs on accurate emulators)
Brutal Mario (Super Kitiku Mario) (demo 7 runs on accurate emulators, every demo post demo 7 has different levels)
Super Marina World (latest version runs on accurate emulators)
Sunny Side World (runs on accurate emulators due to no ASM or Custom Music at the time)
Something Extra (has english translation)
Totally Super Mario World YEAH!! (has fix and translation on talkhaus)
Super SIG World series (warning, very traditional, don't play one after the other, check here for list of remakes, 36 and onward have English versions)

if you want more recent English hacks: JUMP, JUMP 1/2, stick mice in my head then beat my head in with a hammer and let them back out and so 2 mice walk into a bar are all pretty good hacks, but require some skill. if you're wild enough, YUMP 2 is basically hacking for hack's sake and is thus one of the most creative hacks of the past decade but is also kaizo at parts. YUMP is also creative but it also tries to be dadaist at the same time, so it can be a bit divisive.

HackPortsASM"Uploader"

Wow, that's a lotta different hacks. I'm probably not gonna be playing those any time soon, since i already have a pretty big backlog of hacks from this thread. Maybe super later or something. Sorryy! A lot of those titles are pretty funny tho :p
