topic to talk about the fan games you played
Pokémon Crystal Clear is the best Pokémon game I've played, and likely the best one I'll ever play. I've pretty much lost my big interest towards Pokémon, but that game makes me feel like a child again (it helps that it takes place in my favorite region), if Game Freak made a game that was even close to being as customizable and self-contained as Crystal Clear, I'd buy 50 copies of it (probably not really, but I'd support the hell out of it regardless lol).

It's actually a rom hack, but I still think it counts due to being on a similar topic anyway.

A fangame I played that I really liked that also ended up with console releases is Touhou: Genso Wanderer. I picked up the Nintendo Switch deluxe edition that has a lot of the DLC already included and the way that is dispersed and how ridiculously strong some of the bosses are with very specific strategies needed to beat them, I don't think I have yet put a dent into the game even with 40+ hours. Some of the best tracks didn't make it to the 2-disc bonus album, unfortunately, and what is really weird is the actual intro segment is like an hour in and is presented like the end of the game. That threw me for a loop.

It is a Mystery Dungeon (Roguelike) where any meaningful leveling is done through "Nito Fusion", an alchemy-like way of fusing equipment to create gear that is both stronger and holds more attributes. There are cool inventory pouches called Gaps which can provide extra storage, randomize the contents, or extract those power seals so you can apply them to gear you really like.

The equipment can be very bizarre - you have your usual swords and shields but you can also use things like wielding an entire bamboo forest as your melee weapon. For me, this hilarity makes it engaging to see what Nito Fusion can produce because I just want to see the wildest way imaginable of fighting.

The cutscenes have far better art than the main game and the dialogue sessions are extremely long and not necessary to understand the game, but if you know Touhou and the in-jokes both canonically and within the fandom, they are pretty funny. You can also gain more player characters. While you start with Reimu and get Futo as a sidekick, various parts enable you to choose another main and sidekick combo and give them a directive on how you want their AI to work. I love playing as Momiji; I think the awoo memes got to me but she is legit an adorable 2hu.

I would say it is definitely worth it if you like Touhou characters and Roguelikes. Nice and difficult. I can't guarantee you will like it if you like Touhou for the shmup aspect, because even though there are danmaku-themed attacks, it is very, very different from how the official games do it: everything is on a grid, it is turn-based, you have a health system, you don't have a tiny hitbox but the full square you stand on and an RNG you should hope is in your favor determines hit or miss.

Sonic Robo Blast 2 is legitimately one of the top 10 best Sonic games ever
And it'll only get better now that Mystic's constant vetoing of good ideas is gone

@Touhou fan games and Sonic Robo Blast 2, yeah I love those too.
While I've never played the game Counterfeit mentioned, I did play a bunch of Touhou fangames and stuff which I definitely enjoyed.
I can't remember many besides the Touhoumon games, but I assure you that I play a good amount, especially those simple flash browser games. (One of which was a puzzle match game with Flandre and a Reisen one, which was a runner type of game, not endless though, I don't think so)

I'm kinda out of touch with Touhou nowadays, but I've definitely played fangames in my more obsessed era, maybe even more than official games (which isn't too hard considering just how much Touhou fan material there is out there). lol

As for Sonic Robo Blast 2, yeah no joke, that really is one of the best Sonic games I've seen, and due to me being very biased towards 90s Sonic, I could easily dub it my favorite of them all.

Also, I love Yume Nikki fangames, but it's hard to call them actual fangames, it's more like Yume Nikki became a genre and there are a bunch of games in a similar style to it, there actual fangames of YN in the traditional sense though (games with the YN characters and familiar setpieces), but the only one I remember playing was a cute platformer which I forgot the name of. lol
But yeah, in that one, you play as Madotsuki with a knife, it had some godly music and had some exploration if I remember correctly.

Ive heard a lot of bad things about Mystic and I do hope the game can progress to what the current dev team believes in the best interest for the game.

I also concur on Crystal Clear being one of the best gen 2 romhacks of Pokemon, tho I have also taken interest in watching playthroughs of gen 3 and 4 romhacks of the difficulty mod kind (aka the kind Drayano does).

Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch is one of the best Mega Man fangames I've ever played, not the best one because Perfect Blue is my favorite of all, even if it's not completed.

Talking about Mario fangames, my favorite one is Super Mario: Power Star Frenzy, alongside with Unimaker and Super Mario Bros X. Sadly that Power Star Frenzy got cancelled #smrpg{sad}, but I still recommend you guys play it!

more because the game Super Mario: Power Star Frenzy has been canceled
@Y.Y.: Since you brought up Touhoumon, have you (or anyone else) ever played the mobile one? I sunk a lot of time into this fangame too, but slowed down quite a lot when I built a big roster. The leveling system makes it easier to bring up characters who are behind, and it's great to be able to invest in specific stats, but the growing mandate for investment points to increase a stat even by one and the slowness of gaining levels once you are in the 35+ range can make it really tough to advance. I am in the level ~46 range, and forget what stage I am on, and really want to get back into this game.

It has every main character and even some side characters, even bizarre things like a turtle and a missile as characters you can collect. The viability of every single character is what I really love about this PokéClone, and in evolution you can choose a specialization like speed-form, attack-form, defense-form, health-form (with its own sprite!) though not everyone has every option. You get a preview of which types your adversary has before entering battle, which enables you to set up your team accordingly. The battles are incredibly fast, sprites good-looking, but the animations make RGBY look like Michaelangelo. Clearing a stage gives good rewards - occasionally you get something amazing like a free-choice card that lets you get any character in its starting stage that you want, which is great for the ones that cost millions to get; there are some evolutionary items that get handed to you and later on some stat-enhancing hold items which can make or break your battle. I haven't reached a point yet where I can purchase evolution items and I am hoping it is soon because I have so many chibis.

I also became curious just now if the Mugen scene is still big. A few friends and I would download characters and put in our favorite or otherwise-fitting music and watch dream crossover matches played out, and one of my friends used to take requests on combinations to stream to us. Good times.

Just look above you...

@Counterfeit
I've never played the Touhoumon mobile game, but I'm glad to hear it has just as many characters as some of the ones I've played. The specific gameplay though sounds really interest to me, it makes it almost feel like a light-strategy game, I really like the idea of being able prepare in advance. And the things about the forms sound super cool too (but I can't really remember if the old games had that too, but this sounds more modern and a bit more convenient). I really gotta try that sometime.

Also, Mugen was really cool too, but I have no idea of how its doing nowadays. From the little I know though, I think the game engine is getting outdated, so some people are working on a new one because the creator of the engine hasn't been active in years or something like that, but I'm not sure on the status of that, so take this with a grain of salt.
___

By the way, I just found out that Puresabe (the creator of Rockman 4 Minus Infinity) released a hack called Rockman 7 Expert Player. It's pretty much what you would expect if you've played or seen the previously mentioned hack. The stages are over the top and filled with surprises (which I don't want to spoil at all), the game is harder but fair, giving you a bunch of tools, even if it can get overwhelming quite often. The music isn't really custom like in R4MI, but it's still different (but it's all from the original game, just placed in different stages most of the time). The bosses are fucking crazy, because you've seen anything by Puresabe, you know what to expect, it's like some of the best SMW ASM bosses out there (like carol, Touhou Mario and JUMP½, etc level good). It's super impressive, but I'd say it works better than a lot of custom Mario bosses, since you have way more health, better range and weapons, plus means to recharge your HP and so on, it makes it a more balanced fight (well... but unlike in SMW, you can cheese these bosses and a bunch of other things like they were nothing if you want to, so I guess it's not entirely balanced).

I feel like I'm saying too much, but I want to say enough to make people at least interested, but also not enough to ruin any eventual surprises, just like R4MI, your blind reactions to so much of the stuff you come across are precious and you're best saving them for yourself. But if you really don't wanna play, I still suggest at least watching a gameplay video of it.
I wouldn't say it's as bombastic as R4MI, but that might just be because of the more advanced hardware and engine making you take some stuff for granted a little bit.
