this time around, i cobbled together some form of a trailer for my upcoming kaizo - and not kaizo, hack. that's right! for those of you unprivvy in the ways of kaizo, my hack will have variations of each level that fits more in line of the difficulty of 2mice & 1mice. i will be prioritizing the development of the kaizo versions of the levels, so the non-kaizo run of this hack may not be the most off the shits experience, but i hope it'll allow many more people to check it out.
so what exactly is sappho?
sappho is... a hack influenced by s. mario, hyper 6, the og kaizo1-3, and good ol' yump 2. i hope to make this less about triathalon-style design where players will need to learn tricks to progress, and more about how quick the player is on their toes to deal with inane bullshit. there is no overworld, and sappho is presented as a journey from front 2 back, with intermission hubs between each level. the lore is that mario is gay. i have included those dreaded kaizo easter eggs, and the lore behind them are that my friends are also gay.
i have no idea how many levels there will be, i'll more or less keep designing until i run out of steam. i hope for a release in 2021, sooner than later. i want to thank all my friends for helping out with this hack, especially with the visuals - thank you mit, eevee, and magi for contributing art towards this project, there's no way it would be this sexy without y'alls help.
goop.
IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS
This looks fantastic, idol. The designs all look very good, and just the videos alone feel really fun to watch.
What particularly interests me is the choice to switch between kaizo and not-kaizo. That seems like a really good design choice that will make the hack more accessible to people. Though, I have to wonder how it will be labelled in the hacks section; I feel like people who are opposed to playing kaizo hacks will just filter out the "kaizo" tags, and might not even realize the alternative mode you have here.Twitter

This looks really pretty! I really really like the idea of it being a hybrid hack of normal/kaizo. I'll probably prefer the normal mode, but I can manage kaizo (sometimes) lol.
Keep at it, this has a lot of promise!
What the link of Download?Your layout has been removed.
There's no download link, just a trailer.
This looks absolutely gorgeous! I'm probably not skilled enough for the kaizo stuff, so it's cool that there's easier versions of the levels for me to try out!

thanks for the warm words so far everyone!! đź’–đź’–
This hack looks great both design-wise and aesthetics-wise. I'm excited for when this releases. I like the idea of having both normal and kaizo versions of each level; this built-in "easy mode" is a great addition for those who don't care for kaizo. Keep up the great work!
ninja'd once
ninja'd twice
Looks sick so far, definitely excited to play this.
I like the non-kaizo influence in the kaizo levels quite a bit. The projectile dodging and platforming combination reminds me a bit of Storks or Elephants. It's a nice change of pace and I'll always support genre-blending of any kind.
I love your bouncy and round and vibrant graphical style - in terms of cohesive overall visual experience™, this hack is already among the top.
All else I can say is that the title screen font maybe doesn't lend itself too well to all-upercase?
Amazing aesthetics. I wish more kaizo hacks invested in custom graphics, I find odd how many don't go that route, so points to that. The palettes and level flow seems to be in a great spot. Great job!
the screenshots really do look fantastic. im excited for this
aaaa yess this looks fantastic so far!!!! The kaizo versions definitely dragged me in way more than the standard ones, but both look so freakin gorgeous and well designed. Excited to see how the final product turns out!

would it help if i said i made that title screen in 20 minutes just so id have a title screen for this thread, and i absolutely intend on replacing it with something much fancier sdfhsdhf
once again though thank you for the support everyone!!11!
Very cool. I've always liked the kaizo/very hard hybrid style this looks to offer.
Gosh, the aesthetics here look very pretty! Along with those are the graphics, which lend themselves greatly to the overall visuals. Upon watching the trailer, the level design seems quite interesting too, and the fact that a difficulty choice between Kaizo and not Kaizo exists is neat.
