Super Mario 64 Hacks Help

I am new here, so I don't know if this was asked before. I decided to play some Super Mario 64 Hacks and I need help. When ever I downloaded a hack, I only get a BPS file, but no z64 or n64 file. I tried the following things but I got an error when I started it up on the project 64 emulator:

I changed the BPS file to either z64 or n64 but neither work.

I copied the BPS file and then did the same thing I just did above and that didn't work either.

The file also doesn't show up when I open the rom in my project 64 emulator. Can anybody help? Am I missing something?

I also download the IPS patch and tried to apply the BPS patch to the real Super Mario 64 game and it kept telling me that it is not intended for the rom.
A "BPS" file is another type of patch, just like an IPS file. BPS files are much preferred nowadays, which is likely why you're having problems with the IPS patch.

Use Flips (the tool meant for patching and creating BPS files) and apply the patch to your SM64 ROM, and it should work.

I tried and that didn't work. Here is what I did. I created the BPS patch for the game. I selected the patch I was going to use, which was the BPS of the hack, then I selected the Super Mario 64 game to patch it. Then it asks me to select output file and when I save, it says it was successful, but when I tried playing it on the emulator, I got an error. So I tried other ways or combinations but they wouldn't work either. I must be doing it the opposite way.
