Tip: If you're using the wall-running purple triangles in your hack, remember to add Tile 1EB (or a tile that acts like Tile 1EB) underneath it. Extended object 44/45 will include this tile for you.
I like the looks of this hack a lot. I've always been rather attached to Yoshi's Island graphics, and I like the combination you used in the Flower Tower. I know you said that it was a puzzle-based hack (right?), and I don't really care for most puzzles in hacks, but I still want to try this when the next demo comes out. It certainly looks interesting enough.
That's a pretty interesting shop system...although 6 items seems to be a bit too much to have at once, making the hack a bit too easy. Three seems like a fair number.
Steven: Thanks. As for the number of items, I see what you mean, but think about it this way. YI let you carry dozens of items at once, but the game still remained fairly challenging. I think 6 is a good amount. :P Plus, the high-ish difficulty of the levels will balance it out so that way the hack won't be too easy. Thanks for suggesting, though.
DragonFire6780: I was actually considering removing the 1up from the shop as it would be too easy for the player to stock up on them and get tons of free lives. Thanks for pointing it out, though.

Yeah, I guess you know what you're doing. I can't really judge until actually playing it either.
Well it's been a while since I've last updated this thread, so I guess it's time to show some of the progress I've made.
I still haven't finished my Flower Tower level yet. I'm taking a break from that one and coming back to it later. However, I have started working on another level. Here are some screenshots:
A few days ago, I had an idea about making a level in my hack themed around ice skating, so that's exactly what I did. The two screenshots above are from the first level in the third world of my hack, an ice cave level where Mario has to travel through it by ice skating.
The way the ice skates work is by making Mario move forward automatically, while avoiding some of the obstacles in his path. Similar to the skiing levels from YI.
The first screenshot is from the first room in the level, with some 3D-ish foreground graphics and parallax scrolling HDMA in the background to give it a more 3D effect. The second screenshot is from the second room in the level. This part probably looks a bit more like a cave than the first screenshot. :P The waterfalls are on Layer 3, and the rocky BG is on Layer 2. I used levelASM to make the waterfalls scroll at a slightly faster rate than the rocks to give the BG some more depth.
And finally, here is the song that is being used for the level. It's one that I composed myself, and just like all my other songs, it uses new samples:
Nice! Glad to see there is updates. Anyway, I like that the waterfalls are on Layer 3. I am also amazed at how you managed to make that look 3-D. It all looks great!
Whoa. That song is pretty amazing there, Jimmy, though it sounds like it'd fit the cave part of the level a lot more than the other part.
As for the concept of the level itself: Really great idea, and it looks like you pulled it off really well.
Reminds me of Super Mario Galaxy, actually.
The 3Dish graphics on the outside there look real slick and the palette is nice too.
Cool effect in the first screenshot. That background is from Ice Cap Zone in Sonic 3, isn't it? Or am I thinking of something totally different? Nonetheless, loving that FG trick. As for the second screenshot .. neat use of YI's background with the foreground, although I'm not exactly fond of the FG's palette. It looks pretty iffy.
Already commented on the song, so I've said what I've wanted to say here. Looking pretty great as usual.
