I think the idea of translating SMW Time to Actual Time works fine as well as 5 minutes to beat a level should be the very max in a competition such as this.

There was a 5-minute rule in CLDC, but some peeps had doubts about it. However, I don't think this difference should be any problem. It should be common sense that one level shouldn't drag on for too long.

I'll be another one to ask about the timer rule.
I have a Discord server as well!

The rules state that your level cannot be over 500 SMW seconds, much like the VLDC11 rules. However, does this also include the secondary VLDC11 rule of setting the timer to 0 / hiding the timer? If not, how do judges plan to enforce this rule? Will it just be based on the feel of the length of the level, or at the judge's own discretion?

The time limit is timer-independent. You can set your timer to FFF, set it to 500, kill it altogether if you want, but there will still be an enforcement of a 500 SMW-second/333 actual second limit.

That will be enforced by the judges in their playthrough, but we also will be working to make clear videos of each entry so that it's pretty cut and dry what the playtime of a level is.

I would like to ask a question the rules couldn't answer. I worked on my level a few weeks before the start of this contest, and worked on the ASM from way longer than that. While I did make the ASM for general purposes I worked on the level specifically for kldc.
I would like to know if this could cause penalities and/or disqualification, while it would be a bit disheartening I would be willing to make another level from scratch. Thank you for listening and have a good day.

While I think the moment you made the asm doesn't matter, I agree with idol here, using a level already worked on days or even weeks before goes against the spirit of the contest. I'm sure it's not stated on the rules, but if you submmit a level which was worked on for a lot of time before the contest, that doesn't seem very fair for all the other participants really.
Regarding the timer rule, i have a specific question that also arised in other contests that used a timer based rule.
Is this rule valid for a "perfect run", that is, after the player knows the level and plays it from start to finish without dying, or is it for a first playthrough, with figuring out the level layout and obstacles?

I recall in VLDC11 puzzle levels got hit hard by this rule due to the fact judges took too long to figure them out and got punished by the timer. And in CLDC the time rule was later abandoned due to the fact it was hard to guarantee a level could be beaten in 5 minutes (some participants, myself included, even used a clear video with the intent to show how long the level takes to be beaten in a reasonable playthrough).

I just want to have things clear because when you say the rule will be enforced, i assume there is a punishment in place for someone who doesn't follow it. (which wasn't mentioned either)

The timer applies to clearing the level, not to the entire process of learning and then beating it. If your level takes more than 500 SMW seconds to beat in one life, assuming you are progressing as intending and not intentionally stalling, it's too long by our contest rules. If it takes a judge 20 minutes to go from first play to clear, that's fine.

Hi everyone, I'm new I just registered and I'm just getting confused, I speak only Italian, we help me with an automatic page translation function and the google translator translate and send messages, I must say I have never had problems in the forums to understand where write but here I have to say in all sincerity that I do not understand anything.
I would like a little help, some important suggestions.
Maybe it's not the right site for me, for now I am only dedicated to hacker modification of SMB3, I already have a complete file to be able to publish but I won't do it now, first I look for help because I am stopped for a small problem I encountered when I have to attribute the input source and output of the tubes in the maps of SMB3, but not of this finished hack file but of a second I am working on, after I finish it I will publish them together, this already finished is of difficult level, this second I'm creating it is difficult but so that it is possible to finish even without an extreme ability, I would say that it is much easier to finish even if it has a certain difficulty, it takes to know, to have a little practice for the latter but for sure yes can end without bailouts.
Now I leave you my help message below, same that I left on the romhacking.net site so as to give you an idea of what I am talking about exactly, as for the help for me to understand the site tell me in general how this forum works , and if you know how to modify SMB3 well, help me because nobody has written to me yet on that site or on another one.

How do you change Mario's position when he exits the pipe? (on map of SMB3-NES)

Hi everyone, I'm new, I speak Italian so if someone can speak in this language it is better for me because I translate, I'm not good at the language but I hope to make myself understood.
I am creating an SMB3 rom hack and the only thing I don't understand I would like someone here to explain it to me if they know.
I have seen many interesting topics and concerning this practice so I only hope in someone good among you.
I use Fondry for editing, and Map editor.
The theme concerns the tube levels and their relative positions on the map once they are released.
If I use the map editor I noticed that by setting the entry and exit of the tube levels for example in the second world, and doing the same in the third world with two other tubes, the tubes of the second world get damaged, they change in the exit and entry positions as in the 'last modification made in the third world, so both worlds will have only one entrance and one exit, also because it is not possible to make multiple settings of an entry and exit with the map editor, so for example it would be impossible to create a world full of pipes like the original seventh world, or something like the eighth that changes screens, of the same map using the tubes for movement in the respective different zones.
Usamdo Fondry did not notice that using the enemy object function to exit the map, if I position vertically in the map the position changes but it seems to be random the change in the map, if always in the tube level I move this enemy object horizontally nothing ever changes .
Now it seems logical that it is impossible by these means to complete my work unless someone helps me solve the problem in the code.
I would like to point out that I am not a programmer, so you will have to specify everything precisely also due to the fact that I am Italian and therefore things can seem difficult to understand a little even for the language, so I recommend to be very precise and speak a lot to understand more easily. I know the method of changing words in internal games, and where you change words, for example of the princess at the end of the game when Mario frees her, for me that is the code, I mean the source code, I am not very practical, I am I used youtube and a method of copying actions to do it, the last time I did so and I succeeded, so I need a good help and if you can, clarify what certain things are called in technical language, my mind is open to learning, just waiting for an answer, thanks for your interest.

I think this will be my first contest. Endless successes to all!
This will be my first contest as well and am really enjoying building out my level!

Quick question though, how is the overworld typically handled in submissions? I know there's no rule on how to do it but what is the general 'normal' thing to do? Just a blank map with one level entry? Or just having the game start in the level? (I've seen some hacks do this).

Maybe I'm overthinking things but just curious as to what the expectation is.
Usually you handle your map however you want, as it won't be judged at all in your entry.

Some entrants use the overworld as a way to reinforce the overall aesthetics of their entry, but it's just that - window dressing. The only thing judges will score is your level, not your intro screen or overworld. Many entries just use the vanilla intro screen and the bare minimum of an overworld and score very highly.

One question: my level has 2 exits, which open two more levels on the map: one has credits, the other is just a message box, but both can be cleared. However, they don't trigger any exits, and the save file will only ever show a maximum of two exits (normal and secret exits of the main level).

Is it allowed? I wouldn't want to get disqualified over this.

The only thing that will be judged is the level itself. Everything else (overworld, credits, easter eggs, title screen) is up to you to add as you see fit but will not affect your score.

But keep in mind that you must explicitly indicate which level will be judged. This will eliminate possible confusion as to what jury will evaluate.

Oh, it will be very obvious.
ONE WEEK REMAINS.

As we wrap up, a request from the team putting together the judging and contest logistics:

We are planning on having clear videos for each of the levels made following the submission period in order to help the judges, as well as to better showcase all of the entries once the contest is past. However, that's a lot of work!

If you or your testers have a clear video of your submission and are willing to share it, it would be most appreciated!

I assume the best place to submit a clear vid would be to edit it into my submission post?

Either that, adding it to a thread in the subforum, or dm'ing it to me will get the job done. #smw{:TUP:}
