i do agree with the sentiment that putting the level theme criteria above the quality of the song when voting is a bad idea.
but why should people have to check the original song before ranking? that makes no sense, in the end all that matters is how the spc sounds. if the port sounds noisy because the original is noisy that doesn't mean it should just be given a pass.

to hear birds and see none.
@Ultima: tbh, now that I think about it, it really doesn't deserve last place in my voting as I definitively would have put it above Volcanic Heart since I didn't listen to the full song completely (reminds me of Nimono's judging of Matterhorn from VLDC9 which also got more or less undeservedly a low score). That being said...

Honestly, I wouldn't even be as mad if most of the people judging at least bothered to check the original before posting anything, which AFAIK it really doesn't seem like many people have done so in the first place; like, just saying, the title for the original track was right there on the SPC, so there's literally no fucking excuse for this

The funny thing is: I prefer the original over your cover. It seems like your version is missing some background sounds (or at least are not hearable) and uses generally lower sounds pitches which doesn't make the sound but it makes the song feel a bit less icy than it originally is. Still not quite a fan of the music itself, though. Something similar applies to Caves of Fire which is an accurate port of the original but the music itself falls behind other musics.

And again, I would be fine if the complaints were more so related to flaws that some people have found with the track, but focusing them all solely because of the track not fitting the theme of this specific contest... is just fucking stupid honestly; this is a music contest after all, so you should expect the quality of the ports to come in first and the contest theme to be second, not, y'know, the other way around

I did consider 30% of my internal score should go to and 70% of the music to but in the end I didn't.
This is one of the limitations of public voting, something which Von Fahrenheit mentioned for Mad Scientist (which also uses public voting) as well, because there are no fixed rules on how to judge.

Okay, my layout looks ugly.
Personally, I think Ultima's kind of got a point. There were several people that voted super heavily on how well the songs fit the specific levels shown in the videos when the rules said to vote on how well the songs fit the level themes, not the levels themselves (although that probably could've been made a bit more obvious). I kinda feel like the results would've looked quite a bit different if more people voted based on theme.

The way I personally "tiered" the entries in my head was like this:
- Ports that I liked and thought fit the theme well
- Ports I liked and thought didn't fit the theme well
- Ports I didn't like and thought fit the theme well
- Ports I didn't like and thought didn't fit the theme well

That said, the idea that people should have to look up the original songs before they vote makes no sense, and it honestly wouldn't even make a difference. What matters is how the song sounds, not what the original song is. A lot of songs (even some in this contest) fit in multiple different types of levels; for example, Floe would fit in an ice level, but I could also see it working in a factory. Slippy Scary Subterranean brought to mind both ice and water levels, as well as a sunken ghost ship type of level.

I'm more so referring to the people that don't actually know anything about music and can't really judge it by just listening on it's own, which also happens to be most of the people that vote in these contests; I know it might not exactly be that needed tho (and would likely cause a few more problems due to this), but at least this would allow others to judge the port more fairly since they have the source material to rely on, if that makes any sense
