Super Mario Bros: Vanilla Islands - World 7 is done!

I had predicted how World 8, would look like. It is similar to the prediction.

I like the simplicity of 4 levels.
Ninja Boy or Chuggaconny.

Lexend is the world's fastest to read font and I am the only one who uses it.

With everything being so hot, I'm honestly feeling intimidated.

Though the torch decorations look like they damage the player, I suggest changing that.

@Blue Toad: I could make them use the darker palettes. I did so with the base.

I'm now VERY close to being done with this. Yesterday, I managed to finish 8-3. Of course, that means 8-2 is also done.

World 8-2 - Hot in Herre
I have made a reference to this same Nelly song in Kola Kingdom Quest with Hot Out Herre, but this time, I can play it a bit more straight.

The more I look at this, the more I want to name it "Fire in the Sky." It references a song, but it also references an episode of G1 Transformers (one of my favorites, in fact).

So, I already know that all 32 levels will be completed. I can't wait to finally beta test it.

I don't have a job because of disabilities, so I do get a lot of time to spend on these. Right now, it's at a complete standstill because I don't know enough ASM to make a good final boss.

Besides said final boss, the castle is pretty much done.


The first room involves dodging fire-spitting Bowser Statues, Firebars, Dry Bones, and the occasional Fire Bro.


At the end of the first room, you'll encounter a pair of Fire Bros that you have to kill to move on.

The second room, which I have no screens for, involves more Bowser Statues, some of which will jump after you. There are also several Grinders around to cut you off at the pass.


The Tracker Blocks from 7-4 return here, and they're much more dangerous. Try not to get crushed, either by them or the scrolling screen!

Yes, the HUD has changed. The original was a sprite, so it was extremely hard to avoid slowdown or crucial sprites failing to spawn. I ended up porting the ROM so I could use a different Status Bar. My first choice was the SMB3 Status Bar, but that caused an odd glitch where a second Mario would appear in the reserve item box and mirror the real Mario's animation frames. I then ported the ROM [b[again</b> to use the Minimalist Status Bar, like in Super Luigi Land. That almost caused another setback when I got to 4-3.


This is what the Fading Lights UberASM did with the new Status Bar. Yeah, it may look kinda cool/trippy, but it's not what's supposed to happen. Thankfully, I was able to put together a workaround based on the flashlight effect in the second room of 4-4. I just copied the init section of that code to a new ASM file and used that with P-activated palette animation and a solid-colored Layer 2 to get a similar "P-Switch turns the lights on" effect. Because of this, the level looks a little different.


This is when the lights are on, of course.


Back to 8-4
Here's the final room before the boss. It's one of those "Avoid the Bowser fireballs" rooms, but you also have to avoid the skewers.

Gamma V I know there is a final boss left to make, but I have one thing to tell you - you can use Bowser in the 1st phase, and then in 2nd phase will be battle with Dry Bowser, like in Super Luigi Land.

Dont trying to neglect her work, but the final boss from that hack was pretty rushed so I dont think its a good idea to reuse it here(I was able to cheese it by just standing still at the left of the room and it killed itself).

@Bandicoot: I suppose it was. I had to make my own with the n00b Sprite template. The same had to be done here, but I figured I could try using at least one function I never used before. In this case, I made him flip the ON/OFF switch when he's down to half his health. The room itself has KevinM's custom ON/OFF Layer 2 Scroll UberASM running in it, and that allows the spiked ceiling to begin falling when Bowser has taken 4 hits. Upon some advice from people on Discord, I also made him throw hammers. This happens after he's taken 6 hits (1/4 health). Yeah, he takes 8 hits to kill.

I've made some additional changes since my last post. I started by replacing the vanilla goal posts with an SMB1-style flagpole. The midway points, meanwhile, are invisible. Boss levels now have a second checkpoint just before the boss fight. Thankfully, implementing multiple checkpoints has become a lot less tedious than it was the last time I used them. You no longer have to set the entrance coordinates in the patch, which is what made working with it so tedious back in 2012.

With all that out of the way, the hack is now ready for beta testing.
