Tip: Be cautious putting Sprite 9B (Amazing Flying Hammer Brother) above lava. After being "killed", it will still throw hammers until it sinks or goes off-screen.

A month ago I took a break from rom hacking this game, and just came back. I spent a couple of hours remembering how to do stuff but can't remember how to fix a layer three issue. I have a horizontal level that progresses into a vertical level (if this is important). They both have layer three BG, but when I edit the BG in one level it changes the BG in the vertical one. I can't remember how I fix it and have tried using multiple different files for the layer three GFX and tilemap in each level...

God I'm forgetful...

What you describe sounds ok to me. I think you are really close.

Can you tell if the problem is in the graphics or tilemap?

What values in "Layer 3 GFX/Tilemap Bypass" are you using for each level exactly?
Lg1, Lg2, and Lg3 aren't changed, but lg4 is replaced with a copy of 2B, of which I kept the size of the file the same when I edited it. The tilemap file is a copy of 2A.

The second level lg1, lg2, and lg3 files are all the same, and the tilemap and lg4 files are copies of the previous ones used in the first level...

I have a HDMA gradient bg patch inserted to this rom file if this effects anything.

Well, i don't understand either. I'm no expert, so i can only tell you what works for me. The biggest difference is that I use Exgraphics for both tiles and tilemap.

LG4: 84
GFX Tilemap File LT3: 81
Destination for File: Under Status Bar
I figured out the problem, for some reason, lunar magic couldn't find the second tilemap file so I had to redo both files and backgrounds.

I then applied the sprite status bar patch but now part of the status bar appears in the bg. How do I fix this?
