Super Yes World

Standard

Hi there, Nao here!

Super Yes World is a little side project of mine, while working on my main hack, YES Mario. That one requires quite a bit of time and focus, so I found myself needing something more relaxing after a stressful day of university. That's how Super Yes World came to be.

It's 100% Vanilla, including no Map16, no custom palettes, etc. Levels are traditional, short and sweet, and hopefully quite fun to play.

I've got three levels to show so far:

Let me know what you think!
I finished a new level, hope you enjoy it! It also has a secret exit, which is not shown in the video.

I like it! Level design looks very fun, looking forward to giving it a go myself. But this makes me even more curious for your main project tbh.

This looks pretty nice and appears to be an enjoyable experience. I think it is pretty neat how you are able to create levels that borrow elements from both traditional Nintendo design and the "JUMP" style. (This is especially noticeable in the first and last levels you have shown off.)

I saw the secret exit for Full Circle on the Discord server, and it is a pretty fun idea. I like how you are sticking to vanilla SMW as well; I find it fun to explore different elements from the original game and see how they can be mixed together to create interesting levels. Keep up the good work, and good luck on further development of this hack!

Thank you! My main project is not going to be worked on for a while, because uni is keeping me too busy now.

Thank you, I'm glad you like it. I thought I went full traditional on those levels, but looking back at it, some of the levels definitely are more setup based than the average Nintendo level would be. The difficulty curve is also way tighter, but I'm also aiming for less worlds (around 5).

That said, I didn't have much time the last weeks because of two mid-term exams, however I finished a level today.

I usually hate low ceilings and cramped jumps, which is why over the course of 10 years I almost never created castle or cave levels (or anything with ceilings, really). I made this castle out of tight corridors, just to prove to myself I can design around that well enough. The tight spaces make a lot of jumps significantly harder as big Mario, so I tried to compensate by giving capes that trivialise some of the setups involving enemies. Enjoy!
Out of the levels you have showed off here, this is probably my favorite. Everything seems to fall into place and you used various castle elements creatively. My only issue with the level is that I think it could be just a bit longer; you could always use a 1-Up checkpoint right before the boss door. (This is of course in a scenario in which you decide to make the level a little longer.) Regardless, this looks really fun to play. Nice job.
