Best SMW hacks?

I love me some Super Mario World. I think my mario skills are above average (nowhere near kaizo level) and want to play some hacks. I'd prefer ones that I can get on a cart.

I see a lot of different ones. 2D Land, Invaders of the Mushroom Kingdom, Brutal Super Mario World etc.

Which one is the most well polished or most fun? I would eventually like to work my way up to playing some of the harder kaizo type ones.
I haven't been up to date on the latest and greatest hacks in a long time, but I recommend the Vanilla Level Design Contest compilation hacks, the most recent one being VLDC9. They're compilations of level design contest entries so the quality varies, but overall it's a fun experience and a great showcase of what the community can do under vanilla contest rules. (Only the 7th, 8th and 9th contests have gotten compilation hacks, and the first one has had one made retroactively - compilations for the 10th onwards are either still in progress or too unwieldy to make entirely.)

The JUMP series is also worth a play (the sequel being JUMP½) - they're made by a group of really skilled people and way up there in creativity, polish, and also silliness. IIRC, the late game tends to be pretty difficult.

I personally find Gamma V's hacks to be pretty consistently good. SMW2+3 is also up there if you can play it.

I would say Golden Yoshi's too.

While I would suggest JUMP 1/2, I would probably wait until your skill level is higher for JUMP. Not only does it get incredibly difficult at the end, but it also has some pretty bad levels; I wouldn't consider JUMP very polished. The difficulty curve is nowhere near as wonky and the overall level quality is higher in JUMP 1/2. Once again, I suggest that hack over anything else off of the top of my head.

I personally don't like the design style of Gamma V's hacks at all, but you, the original poster, might. I'd say that your enjoyment of any hack depends on what type of design styles are your favorites.

Well Gamma V's levels generally are v accessible but for me, the fact that she made many hacks with that I feel that even playing one of her hacks, is just playing them all. My opinions on that has not changed since 2018 on that.

Anyways best SMW hacks people talk about these days are the obvious JUMP and JUMP1/2 hacks, MICE, 2mice, SMW: Gaiden, Super Isikoro Mario World, R-ACK, Krack the Hack, levelengine hacks post-Bits and Pieces, and for the Kaizo side - Casio, YUMP2, any of the Morsel Kaizos, Grand Poo World 2, Quickie World hacks, Dram World hacks. I'm also anticipating Waterworld would also be up there but its too early to tell.

Hacks that were well-liked and talked about a lot in the past - SMW 2+3, Super Mario Omega, Mushroom Kingdom Meltdown series, Mario Gives Up 1 and 2, Brutal Mario, Rise to the Challenge, TSRPR, TSRP2R, The Senate, SMB3X, Il Maniero Spettrale, Anikiti's hacks from Luigi's Adventure onward.

Now for something related but I believe is still worth mentioning in this thread...up and coming SMW hacks worth paying attention to that if they ever get completed, they would potentially be seen as among the best in the community - Extra Mario World, Sicari 2, A Plumber for All Seasons, H&S Bet Revised, FS Retold, The Infinite Library

On Pixel Art Requests: I generally do not accept work unless I either have the time, if I see your project worth my time to contribute towards, and that is usually me doing the approaching to you on that.
-I also do not accept speculative work as I do have various art I made on-hand with me.
-I am more receptive to equivalent exchange of resources in which case, you can DM me wherever I have an active presence on for the details.
-Other times I'm availible for your project is C3 request threads I may run.

I don't have any answers to the topic that haven't already been given - but for future reference, the "SMW Hacking Help" forum is more for questions related to issues you've run into while creating your hacks. If you just want to talk about other hacks in general, then the "SMW Hacking Discussion" is more fitting, so I'll move this thread over there.

this hack needs a name has always been one of my favorites. some of the end- and post-game content is pretty tricky, but it's mostly a chill, smw-esque experience. i consider it a must-play.
Already been mentioned (albeit in the middle of a big list), but SMW: Gaiden is my favorite hack, despite me not having completed the special world and final level yet. It has and amazing amount of polish, extremely concise design, an expansive world, and lots of salt. It isn't a hack for everyone, but if you're particularly into Nintendo's vision of a romhack (SMB:TLL), it's basically perfect.
I usually like bad hacks like Hammer Brother Demo 3, Iggy In Unova, Link's Adventure or something like that.

I recommend Nachos and Fried Oreos, it's a challenging hack, but it's really good.

I think Sunny Side World is my favorite for what it accomplished. If memory serves me right it was one of the first hacks to really use ExGFX to it's fullest potential. The levels were really fun too although it was really short. I believe it came out around 2007-2008? The creator has been gone for ages though and nothing was ever released aside from the world 1 demo we got. No idea if it's even on SMWC.
My favorite for how fun it is for me would have to be either Super Mario LD or JUMP 1 or Super Mario World YEAH!!!. LD is fun to me because of how many ideas it gives me for levels and playstyles. JUMP is fun for what all it manages to do and how impressive the whole thing is (especially that extra submap thing thats nuts). SMWY is fun because of how overall unique the entire hack is. It's got some of the cleanest ASM work I've seen of any hack and it's an absolute joy to play through.

New Super Mario World 1: The Twelve Magic Orbs is fun!
Any standard 2021 hacks#w{=D}
a few hacks that i like are: super mario world secret of the seven golden statues, mario gives up, 100 rooms of enemies, a smwc production, and more recently, a plumber for all seasons. and those were just a few, there are many great smw hacks out there.
