Rykon-V73 - the BG converter - switch palace edition - part 2 - last day - 2 unique layer 3 BGs available

GraphicsSuper Mario WorldResource ReleaseScreenshots

While I wait for some responses on my first C3 thread, I decided to show some BGs converted to layer 3. It's easy to convert layer 3 to layer 2, but backwards is very difficult. Luckily, I'm one who can do that. Before, I showed 2 BGs converted to layer 3 and that's it. Now, I have more converted BGs at my disposal. I'll start by showing this BG:

Yoshi's Island - Sea - layer 3

Here, you see the BG in action. You notice no island and a few clouds are gone. I wasn't able to include those, thanks to the palette. Speaking of palettes, here it is:

Uses every palette avaliable. Wished there was more, but that's the SNES. The result is great. If you really want to know about GFX tiles, note that:

it uses the least tiles, possible, 52 to be exact. Here are additional examples of the BG with different color palettes:

Here's the order: dawn(in the archive it's dusk), night, unused and poison. There's another custom palette, altdim, but you know how that is.

Download: Here

I also have another layer 3 BG. Remember in my other thread where I said I'll work on another Mega Man & Bass BG? Well, turns out that BG was actually converted to layer 3 and done. I wasn't able to make the bottom accurate, but I did try to make the lower part similar. Here it is:

Mega Man & Bass - Magic Man - layer 3

I used LiceCap to record the animation. This is one BG that I underestimated. I thought it was actually easy at first, but turns out, I hit the bottom of the barrel, since I needed more colors. So, I improvised, with good results. Stars are on palettes 0 and 1, the ferris wheel uses palettes 2, 3 and 4, the bush uses palettes 5 and 6 and the rest, such as buildings for example, uses palette 7. Here's the palette:

Now for the GFX. Here:

Uses 193 tiles total. You can see palette 7 for the buildings. I drew some custom carrousel tiles myself.

While I did get some attention, I decided to up the ante with 2 other converted BGs, like this one:

Yoshi's Island - Tropical Hills - layer 3

Starting from above did seem a mistake, so I started from the bottom and worked all the way to the top. You might expect this layer 3 BG to use 1 ExGFX file and about a half. I'll show you a screenshot:

You see the GFX below. It uses 121 8x8 tiles. You might be thinking how. Well, if you notice the BG above, you may notice missing things, like upper leaves merging with lower leaves. I decided to scrap that and go for regular connection. It turned out well. Here's the palette:

Every layer 3 BG of mine has its own color duplicates. You may want it.

If you thought the layer 3 BG above was hard, then you're mistaken. The layer 3 BG below required even more effort. You may think it's on layer 2, but no:

Yoshi's Island - Happy Hills - layer 3

Already you notice the fact that there's no green hills or one of the hills is gone. The reason for the first one is layer 3 color limitations of course and the other one is that it required some weird tile merging. I cancelled it.
Guess what my worst enemy was this time? That's right: pixelation.
Because of how the smiley hills BG was drawn, I had to carefully draw it, so that it matches the YI original BG. It turned out nice. Here's the palette:

You also see orange hills. Careful color manipulation lead to those. Here are the GFX:

It uses 137 8x8 tiles.
This layer 3 BG also comes with 2 custom palettes:

You also see the green variety and my alternate dimension palette.

Okay... last day for me. Before I move on with the releases, I'll show you this BG:

It's the Tropical Hills BG. Not sure if it's used. It's included in the tropical hills archive.

Now for the real deal. Only Darkbloom has these 2 layer 3 BGs. It took a really long time, but I decided to show the first one. It comes from something like 'Weird Big Bro with Column Explosions', which translates in Japan to:

Cho Aniki Bakuretsu Ranto Hen - Clouds

Originally, this was layer 3, but the way it was set up confused me, so I decided to reconvert it, using my layer 3 knowledge. Turns out, it looks accurate enough to be released. There were some limitations. Here's the palette:

This uses very close palette colors. Experimenting with this should give you an idea how it works. Want to see GFX amount, even though most of you don't care? Then here:

Uses about 177 GFX tiles.

Here's the other BG Darkbloom has and this one has a story:

Cho Aniki Bakuretsh Ranto Hen - Flowers

The BG itself uses 40 tiles and that's it. But the title says 'Flowers'. Here's the story: I told Darkbloom I could only rip the trees. The layer 2 BG was too much to handle. Still... like me being the dumb one I am, I decided to tackle the layer 2 BG as well. This was the hardest challenge I had: playing with the colors of leaves, flowers and other things. I had to drew some parts the best I could.
Here's the full layer 3 BG:

Quite the accurate result. I ripped a BG that's both layer 2 and layer 3. Here's the palette:

The tress and leaves are easy, but for the rest, you must experiment for good result. Here are the layer 3 GFX tiles:

This uses about 244 8x8 tiles. Quite the record for converted layer 3 BG. You should watch out. Use the exit to another area and use the goal tape there. The goal tape doesn't work here. Also:

The last BG from a game you expected. idol made the trees layer 3 only. I decided to go all out:

Yoshi's Island - Hills - layer 3

For this one, my worst enemy was accouracy. Trying to make it into layer 3 was nearly impossible, but with my will, I managed it. Oh, you do know that Yoshi's Island plays well with its colors, right? Well, here's proof:

It's the same BG, but with snow. Here, you see snowy trees. The first palette shown never had that. You can edit the palette of that snow to be what you want. Here are the layer 3 palettes:

Palettes can be edited. You also see the clouds. I had to use only 1 color. You might guess where is that color? It's the 3rd color of palette 3. Here's the GFX:

You see the lower and higher colors of specific GFX files.
The BG uses about 204 8x8 tiles. Here are 3 additional palettes for you. It's nice to have variety, isn't it?

Order: 2-7, 5-8 and altdim.
You can also have this, just for your pleasure:

Download: Here

Well, that's all I had to show you. Not sure if I should continue do this. It takes a lot of effort, but if most of you want to, then I'll do it.

In the future, I'll upload every converted layer 3 BG to SMWCentral in the Graphics section.

Feedback is welcome. Conversion was insane for some BGs.

I love what you did to the background with the ex animation gives the carnival a more retro theme great job.

LAYOUT FOOTER:
These are really good, it's always nice to see more layer 3 BGs. I also love the exanimation you did on the ferris wheel.
Check the first post. This should be good for nomination.

Honestly, having more or less complex layer 3 backgrounds are always cool, especially if paired with a layer 2 background. Keep up the work!
Thanks for your words, MFG! 2 BGs come from an unusual game. Only 1 person has them, but I'll make those official tommorrow. :)

It was really impressive.
I liked how you converted the Layer 2 backgrounds to Layer 3.
Nice job...
It's good to see Yoshi's Island BGs ported to Layer 3, I'm particularly excited about the exotic hills since I love it very much.
Nice to see you're still converting backgrounds to layer 3. Several people may find these useful! Good job.

Your skills to convert backgrounds to layer 3 variants never ceases to amaze me. Fantastic job with your rips, man. Layer 3 backgrounds are becoming more relevante as time passes by, or when all the slots of normal graphics are used. Please keep your nice work going on. #smrpg{:3}

Nice background rips, especially on the Yoshi's Island stuff.

Check my first post. The last layer 3 BGs are available for download. Hope these do lead to a possible nomination.

Oh wow, Nice work on ripping more Yoshi's Island backgrounds! No not much else to say here.

Glad to see some Yoshi's Island backgrounds converted to Layer 3 for Layer 2 level use! Guess I'm gonna use these in a hack someday...

Hey, those are my requests! It's funny seeing them here. Not in a bad way. Your stuff is consistently REALLY impressive and we've used a lot of it in our collab :)
I've been thinking of doing this too. Great Ripping.
