So this is a thing I've been working on for the last several months, and it's nearing completion for the initial release. I thought I'd share with you all what I have so far.
FAQ:
Q: What happened to Superstar Editor?
A: I canned it and decided to work on a YI editor instead. Though there's a small chance I might come back to it in the future.
Q: When will it be released?
A: When it's ready. Which should hopefully be soon.
Q: Can you add X feature?
A: Once I've finished adding all the features I want to add, I might take input from other people. But now is not the time.
This looks super impressive so far. I could see myself trying to make some levels in YI with this when you release it. Very nice work!
That is freaking awesome! Looking forward to play around with this whenever it's ready!
Oh my God. My eyes are shining.
What a wild surprise. I always had a lot of trouble making levels in YI when I was trying my hand at YI hacking (blame Golden Egg's poor structure). GG!
This looks rad. How does it compare with Golden Egg though? Do you aim to surpass it as the main editor for YI?
Looking real forward to this, it looks great. Golden Egg, your days are numbered.Don't eat the sandwich
This looks amazing I can see myself using this whenever it gets released. I have always wanted to mess around with YI and I think this editor will give me the motivation to do so.
oh hey! i sorta feel bad in retrospect for earlier convos i had with you about superstar editor, and kinda pushing for a yi editor to come to light,,,, but fuck me this makes me p happy to see. i've always hoped yoshi's island hacking could be easier for folks to take part in, and i'm excited for the eventual release / testing of this thing.
yoshi's island contests coming in the near future again? 🙊
Dang, this looks awesome! I've never been a big fan of Yoshi's Island and as such have never bothered to try hacking it, but the fact that this interface is so similar to Lunar Magic's might convince me to try it out sometime. Very nicely done, and I'm interested to see what becomes of this editor.Check out my WIP romhack!
Now this is epic period.

Having worked significantly in Golden Egg for the past 6 months and having to endure an absolutely unfathomable amount of jankery in the editor, I am so beyond grateful that you are doing this, and I wish you the absolute best of luck in working towards completion.
I have memories of opening up golden egg back when I was 16 and just being utterly confused and overwhelmed by it, to the point where I never went back to try again... Which is a shame, because I think YI has a lot of really interesting mechanics and compared to SMW it might even be my favorite game of the two.
Given how everyone else who's posted so far seems to have similar experience with golden egg, the prospect of there finally being a big improvement on it is really cool. I'm excited to give YI hacking another try!
So yeah, a huge thank you for working on this! Making a whole new editor can't be an easy task.
can't wait for more people to start hacking the best smw platformer, smw2 c=
this looks like a very accessible editor! great work!
I really admire your work. If this is released it will help a lot in the YI hacking. Good luck with the project!
this is certainly a welcome surprise. i'm digging the early lunar magic influence in the ui
This is excellent news! It's very nice that you can actually see the sprites. I'm not sure if it does this for sprites just based on the screenshot, but if it uses spriteset data in displaying sprites it would make it a lot easier to see in an instant whether a sprite can be used or not in the level. But anyway, this editor would seem to be a lot more user-friendly than Golden Egg, so it would likely be good for drawing more people into the YI hacking community (especially people who already hack SMW, as you've made the interface similar to Lunar Magic).
I really want to see the SMAS and YI hacking scenes grow more, and this is definitely one step closer to that. Haven't used Golden Egg before but given everyone's reactions it's clear this is leagues ahead of that. Excellent work!
I'm pretty stoked about this, honestly. Even though I haven't really picked it up in a few years, Yoshi's Island is a game that I could (and still can) see being really popular like SMW, if it were to ever become nearly as easy to modify. This editor you've been working on really does seem like a great step in the right direction.
