yeah, if an ukiki falls in the water while in its "stunned" state it'll drown for a second before recovering and swimming away from the player; virtually all behavior should be in there

the only problem is that the sprite will always change its layer priority while in the water (which is intended) so that it appears behind the water tiles

in YI they have no actual swim animation; they just float in a standing pose -- they function the same way here



I heard a lot about your monkes but this subverted my expectations completely. I'm used to kinda shoddy recreations of YI sprite in SMW, but this makes it feel like those monkeys were made for SMW and hacked into YI rather than the other way around. Stealing carryables and item box items?! I can't even begin to imagine how long you spent working on these features.

The bar is already pretty high for you lol but I'm legitimately impressed. Amazing job Sonikku!
I remember you showing this off on Discord and man these little monkey fellows are amazing.

I found the monkeys stealing item box powerups and carriable sprites terribly hilarious, lol.

Anyway, I'm definitely considering using them in my hack somehow, as they look so accurate and faithful to YI. Nice job!
Easily the most mischievous sprite ever made in SMW. One of the few sprites that actually feels alive and has a personality - Recreating that behaviour must have been extremely tedious, but you did it and you did it well.
holy moly this has to one of the most complex graphics routines i have ever seen, super impressive sprite

Haha, this is amazing. No doubt there was a ton of work put into this, I'm impressed. How you got every routine going from YI to SMW just feels seemless and all the more impressive.

I can see some devious setups with this in the near future, lol.

monkey boy.

Impressive. They've got so many different types of behaviours, I admire the dedication to string it all together, keeping it very accurate too! Took a look down the ASM file to see how big it was, and when the line count hit over 2k I was like "sheesh". Brilliant work.
This is great!.

I'd actually searched previously for a Ukiki sprite, and when I couldnt find one I messed around with trying to replace another sprite's graphics with Ukiki/monkey graphics but failed. My tropical SEA level is idea can now become reality!
It's really cool to see my favorite YI enemy as a custom sprite for SMW! With how accurate it is, this looks like it had to have been a pain to recreate. XD

I just realized I forgot to ask another question here Sonikku; in YI it is possible to find a bunch of the monkeys swinging back and forth on a vine trying to grab Baby Mario (if they do, they all fall off the vine and act like normal monkeys). Just wondering if that behavior here was implemented or can be theoretically done? It's no big deal if that's not possible here.

not possible within SMW, at least in the traditional way; through dynamic sprites it is possible but not worth my time to recreate

in YI the sprite rotates with multiple separately rotated segments to create a swinging effect, and doing so without dynamic sprites would be impossible



This is an extremely well-done sprite! I saw this in Discord ever since last C3, and it was just so cool! True quality over quantity! If you don't mind though, I'd like to ask a small question (and no, I cannot see the sprite's code for that): is it possible to make the Ukiki treat whatever Map16 tiles the user wishes like vines or is that hardcoded?

would be feasible to do, but i'm rather certain it relies on acts-like settings, so a custom block that acts like vines to sprites would probably suffice as well


as another C3 thing that i guess i could release:



a sprite version of the Midway Point object. it works akin to the Goal Tape in that it moves up and down -- instead of granting bonus stars, it gives points (and a 1up if you hit the very top), but otherwise looks/acts as you'd expect

it also comes with some configuration options if you want to make it fit into your hack better; overall, the goal was to make it fit in vanilla-styled hacks

a proper release will be in the sprites section, but for now:
