@Galaer to address some of your concerns.

Kaizo is not being excluded because it's a difficulty type, it's being excluded because it's a type of level design that is not widely accessible and has a high technical barrier for entry, the door is left open for difficult levels with Standard: Very Hard. By saying no Kaizo it means we are not looking for the sorts of setups and tech that is in that design style and we want people to work within Standard as it's the best vehicle for the contest theme. Sorry, but this is not up for debate.


It's not a discrepancy, while they're not mandatory the mentioning of overworld and aesthetics and such is to encourage people to think about them some way when creating their levels. We don't want people to think that that stuff does not have value in the contest and are not being looked at by the judges, if a level has great "packaging" in the form of an overworld and titlescreen and aesthetic theming, it will fare all the better in the contest, which is why it's mentioned.


The best shorthand (probably) for thinking about how the levels will be judged qualitatively is: "this is so bad it's good" and submitting an extremely polished level that is really refined and plays entirely smoothly may not fare well in this contest.

I saw that in the rules that I'm allowed to work with one other person for my level. But if we had a seperate person write some ASM for us to use. Would that be within the guidelines or would he be considered a third person?
Either way I'm super excited for this contest.

That is within the guidelines. You can use and credit others work and resources, just no more than 2 authors can be on the submission itself.

No. You can use as many doors or pipes as you want.

About the infinite lives rule, what about when using HP system, in my case this one?

Oh, it's my HP patch! Because there aren't lives anymore, I made the patch in such a way that dying either results in a game over or just boosts you back to the overworld, the latter which is equivalent to infinite lives.

Anything that prevents a "Game Over" and progress loss for players (and the judges) is all that is required. If these systems prevent that then you're good to use them.
I just don't get what the rules topic says, do you want us to make garbage or just memey levels?

That's up to you. You can make barely playable garbage, or something very memey, or a combination of both, "questionable" is very much open to interpretation here. But if you want a sense of the kind of thing this contest is looking for, YUMP 2 is probably the best example of a hack full of levels that wouldn't be out of place here.

Wait, but YUMP 2 is kaizo hack and it's pretty polished too. Are you sure this hack is good example for this contest?
