Site Staff and Helper Applications

Site Staff and Helper Applications

In lieu of our periodically recurring staff applications, this thread will stand open year-round as a list of which positions around the site are in need of filling, granting our team managers more leeway to recruit more help as the need arises. In addition, this thread will document openings for Site Helper positions.

Unlike a Moderator, who is a full-time member of the Staff team, Site Helpers are brought on to assist in a more limited capacity. What exactly it is a Helper does varies from section to section, and the role can exist with respect to a specific project (like a remoderation or a contest) - be sure to read and understand the details regarding the position you are applying for!

Do be aware that Site Helpers do not receive a custom name colour. However, their usernames are marked with a special icon () to distinguish them in the online users list; they are given a Helper power title, as well.

How to Apply

The section below lists all the positions that could potentially be hiring. Special projects in need of help such as remoderations and contests are added and removed as needed. A Staff member will post in this thread each time a position is opened, closed, added, or removed.

Send your application via site PM to one of the relevant Staff Team Managers. Once your application has been received, it will be discussed amongst the team, and you will be contacted once a decision has been made. Your application will be kept on file even if you are not hired, and we may choose to reach out in the future should a position open up later on. You are permitted to apply for more than one position. Should you have any questions, you are free to ask them in this thread, or contact the relevant section manager directly.

Application Requirements

In your application, please specify which position you are applying for in the PM subject. Regardless of the specific role, your application should be built around the following:

  • Your history with the site and/or SMW Hacking.
  • Your motivations for applying to the position you are applying for
  • What you feel you can bring or contribute to SMW Central as staff.
  • Why you feel qualified for the position, and what experience you have in the field.

Other important information to consider including is:

  • Your age.
  • What language(s) you speak.
  • How active you are on SMW Central.
  • How much availability (time) you would have to attend to your duties.

It's strongly recommended that you try to address the above points because it may result in your application not being considered if you don't!

Additionally, we encourage you to elaborate on your skills and add anything else that you may find relevant: your experience hacking in other communities, any goals you'd have as moderator, if you have any previous moderation experience, etc.

If you're on the fence about applying, the recommendation is to go for it anyway. Worst case scenario you're passed over, and even then your name will be kept in mind for hires down the road.

Staff Requirements

  • You must be able to join the SMW Central Discord.
Many staff discussions and relevant announcements take place in the staff-only sections of the SMW Central Discord server so all prospective staff members must have a Discord account and be present in the server so they can be reached by other staff and take part in staff conversations. You need not be active in the general portion of the server itself (though it doesn't hurt) but must be attentive to role or direct pings.

  • You must be relatively fluent in English.
The site's primary language is English, so being able to speak it is essential to take part in not only staff discussions, but also to intervene in situations that call for it. English does not have to be your first language and your language abilities do not have to be perfect, but we should be able to hold a regular conversation with little difficulty.

  • You must be able to work in a team.
Being able to be collegial with the rest of staff, understand voluntary teamwork, and know when matters should be brought to discussion with the rest of the staff team first is important for all members so we can work together well.

Staff and Helper Job Descriptions

The sections below contain additional information, about the position itself as well as specific responsibilities. Make sure you consider this information before applying to guarantee that your application is complete.

Forum Moderator Position

As a forum moderator, your job is to browse and keep on top of SMW Central's forums, keeping an eye out for instances where moderator intervention is necessary and acting upon this. The role includes:

  • Issuing site warnings and, potentially, bans to users who break the site rules.
  • Closing/Moving/Trashing threads where necessary.
  • Removing post layouts and other user profile elements where they are not in compliance with the site rules.

You are welcome to choose specific forums to focus on more heavily, but you are still expected to moderate the rest of the forums as well. This is something we're able to discuss further once hired. You are also expected to take part in discussions relating to the site's forum structure, future operations, as well as provide ideas and feedback for changes/updates proposed to the site rules.

What We're Looking For

  • You must have a good knowledge and understanding of the forum and site rules. You will be enforcing them, so knowing and following the rules is essential.
  • You must have regular availability. We're not expecting you to be able to devote 10 hours/day to SMW Central or anything extreme, but you must be around often enough to efficiently monitor the forums.
  • You should have some knowledge of SMW hacking. While the basic duties of a forum moderator don't really require knowledge of SMW hacking to a great depth, having the knowledge will benefit you when it comes to moderating the forums specifically those specifically about SMW hacking.

Forum Helper Responsibilities

As a Forum Helper, your job will be very similiar to that of a forum moderator but with limited powers. In addition to the above, the role includes:

  • Reporting issues to the Forum Moderators team where intervention such as warnings and bans may be necessary.
  • Reporting post layouts and other user profile elements where they are not in compliance with the site rules.

In your application, you should make it clear which forum(s) you wish to help moderate, as these are the forums you will be given basic moderation powers in if your application is successful. You will not be required to moderate forums outside of your moderation areas. However, if you do spot issues there you will be encouraged to report them to someone who does moderate that forum.

Discord Moderator Position

As a Discord Moderator, you are simply striving to make sure everyone is following the SMW Central Discord server's rules and remaining respectful. You have to keep an eye out, across the whole server, for rulebreaks, including everything from discriminatory remarks, to NSFW content, to ROM uploads, to harassment.

In short, your main tasks are:

  • Keeping an eye out for potential rulebreaks in the server and bringing them up for discussion as you notice them.
  • Issuing warnings, mutes, and bans as discussed.
  • Actively participating in moderator discussions, which includes everything from how to handle a given situation, to general talks on how to improve the server.
  • Logging things that need to be logged behind-the-scenes (server emote changes, etc.).

While you don't need to lose sleep and be online 24/7, it's important to be regularly active in the server, not only to catch any potential incidents, but to be able to discuss them with your fellow moderators in the moment. It's also worth noting that Discord moderation is much more fast-paced compared to other types of moderation on the site, due to Discord's nature as an instant messaging platform.

Finally, it's important to be able to remain calm and neutral when dealing with incidents. You shouldn't act rashly if you're frustrated, nor incite any drama, for example. It's okay to pass the baton onto another mod. We are a team after all!

What We're Looking For

  • You must have a good knowledge and understanding of the Discord and site rules as you will be enforcing them, so knowing and following the rules is essential.
  • You must have regular availability. We're not expecting you to be able to devote your whole life to SMW Central or anything extreme, but you must be around often enough to efficiently moderate the Discord.

SMW Hacks Moderator Position

As a hack moderator you will be responsible for ensuring that every hack we host is up to the level of quality we expect for the site. This is to ensure that creators are putting out the best version of their project before it goes into the SMW Central archive. Importantly, this is not a taste-making role, you aren't here to evaluate hacks based on your own personal tastes or opinions or to do any sort of curation.

All hacks in the section must follow the section guidelines for all of the hacks submitted to the site, it is up to hack moderatores to make sure that all hacks are following these guidelines to the best of their ability. But as a moderator you will have some discretion to interpret some of the guidelines loosely and hack creators are extended leeway for artistic reasons.

Additionally hack moderators are also responsible for keeping the hacks database organized, which includes making sure hacks are in the right category and tagged properly, among other things.

What We're Looking For

  • You must be skillful enough at playing the sorts of hacks they are applying to be a moderator for.
  • You must have a basic understanding of Lunar Magic and common resources used in hacks to be able to pinpoint general and specific flaws and mistakes, as well as be able to suggest improvements.
  • You are able to write constructive, informative, and educational removal logs.
  • You are able to put aside your own preferences about level design, how to make hacks, in order to be deferential to what creators are trying to achieve in their own creations.

SMW Graphics Moderator Position

Are you pixel perfect? If so you can contribute to the Graphics section here on SMW Central! As a graphics moderator you will be responsible for reviewing the graphics submissions users make to make sure they are up to the quality we expect for the site.

What We're Looking For

  • You should have an understanding of pixel art and graphics, especially within SNES and SMW Hacking limitations, pinpoint general and specific flaws and mistakes, as well as be able to suggest improvements.
  • You should know your way around the technicalities involved in custom graphics for SMW Hacking (Lunar Magic navigation, map16 editing, palmasking, etc.).
  • You should understand usability and the optimization thereof with regards to graphics (Organizing map16, splitting graphics files effectively, reducing palette consumption, etc.).
  • You should be able to write constructive, informative, and educational removal logs.
  • You should be willing dedicate some time, albeit not massive, towards the serious but not so exciting task of remoderation.

SMW Music Moderator Position

Hey! Do you like custom music for SMW? Do you want to contribute in some way to the largest single section on the site? Or maybe you're sick of seeing the high queue? Well, we're opening applications for SMW Music Moderators and Helpers to help satiate all of those desires. We're opening for both based on the availability of the applicants; if you have free time and can consistently contribute, try your hand at being a moderator, and if you don't have much time but want to contribute in some meaningful way every now and again, opt for helper.

Music moderation is a simple task, and we're willing to help you out through everything you need to know. Additionally, each function you'll have will be thoroughly explained to you both in a guidelines post as well as by your fellow team members.

What We're Looking For

  • You should have a solid understanding of custom music, their limitations, good practices for MML syntax and an ear for mixing and inaccuracies as they come.
  • You should be able to communicate with submitters to provide feedback when necessary.
  • You should be able to write informative and explanatory rejection logs, and having sound judgment on when to reject music.
  • You should be mature, understand the rules and guidelines that come with the position, and be able to communicate with other mods during times of uncertainty.

SMW ASM Moderator Position

The primary job of an ASM Moderator or general ASM Helper is to verify the quality and functionality of a patch, sprite, block, Tweak, or UberASM code before accepting it into the sections. In addition, ASM Moderators/Helpers review the accuracy and relevance of entries to be accepted into the Memory Maps.

In practice, a Moderator and a Helper both carry out the same tasks. The primary difference between the two is time demand - a helper is only expected to take care resources here and there, whereas a full Moderator is expected to be more consistently engaged. Please specify whether you are applying to be a Moderator or Helper, but do bear in mind we're more than willing to work with you as you feel out the role - the potential is there to promote from Helper to Moderator should you find the workload manageable, and vice-versa if it's too much.

Someone seeking to become an ASM Moderator/Helper needs to:

  • Possess a suitable grasp of ASM coding basics.
  • Know how to apply patches with Asar.
  • Know how to add sprites, blocks and UberASM with PIXI, GPS and UberASM Tool, respectively.
  • Be able to demonstrate appropriate thoroughness in testing a resource.
  • Be available with relative consistency, particularly for full Moderators.

Someone seeking to become an ASM Moderator/Helper does not need to:

  • Possess in-depth, high-level knowledge of ASM or SNES functions.
  • Know how to code in any language other than ASM.
  • Have experience with debugging tools.
  • Be 100% comfortable with every aspect of sprites, blocks, patches, and UberASM at once.
  • Be available 24/7 without exception.

You don't need to be a coding master in order to apply - far from it! Learning on the job is expected, and is considered part-and-parcel of the moderation experience. Though the bulk of moderating an individual resource tends to be a solitary effort, teamwork and communication are still a big part of the job - Discord access is very highly recommended, but can be discussed if it presents an issue.

SMW Patch Remoderation Helper

This position has a narrower focus and a more relaxed time demand than a full ASM moderator role, and may be a good way to get a taste of the moderation process. A Patch Remoderation Helper needs to:

  • Possess a suitable grasp of ASM coding basics.
  • Know how to apply patches with Asar.
  • Know how to convert manual freespace to automatic.
  • Possess a rudimentary understanding of SA-1 and SA-1 hybridized patches.
  • Be able to demonstrate appropriate thoroughness in testing a resource.

A Helper is granted a line of communication with the ASM Team on Discord and the forums, so you wouldn't be out there all on your own. Simply check in once in a while, and update a few patches here and there. Please specify that you are applying for the Patch Remoderation Helper position in your application.
Applications for the SMW ASM Moderator and SMW ASM Helper positions are now CLOSED.

Applications for the SMW Patch Remoderation Helper position remain OPEN!.
We've opened up a brand-new PR Helper position of Twitter Helper.

More info can be found in the OP of this thread. Feel free to get in touch with me or ask here if you have any questions.

There's currently no "fixed" deadline to apply. However, ideally I'd aim to have the position filled by the end of this month at the latest.

I think I am somewhat interested, but if it is a helper position, I assume it is not paid.

No one on the staff team is paid. These are not paid positions, everyone who helps with the site is a volunteer, from helper to admin, and we work in our spare time.

So no, it is not paid.

None of the staff positions are paid at all, from helper to admin. We're not a business lol.

SMW Central staff and helpers are all volunteers because we love the community and want to give something back. So... #smw{o_O}

I'll be honest, I forgot to close them after hiring from the last round, but I currently feel the team is working at a pretty good pace for the remoderation. I may open them again in the near future if I feel we need some more help.
I would have liked to enter moderators of graphics of smw, I hope that someday it will be open again and if I know that I get into this thread VERY later
Forum Helper applications are currently closed. Apologies - these should have been closed a while ago but it slipped my mind.
