SMWCentral Official Annual Music Tourney #1 2021 - end

Event

Go Ichinose - Lake
Men I Trust - Seven (Garage Session)

A fairly good bunch, and anything including Pokémon is getting picked
Every dream is but another reality, never forget…

My In-Progress Hack

1. Takeshi Abo - Gate of Steiner -Piano- (honestly, I might be biased here since I've watched Steins;Gate not too long ago, but personally this is pretty much my favorite rendition of the main theme, and even with how much it played in the anime and with the fact I normally don't tend to be into solo piano as much, especially in the case of arrangements, I just love how it sounds here, both with how it almost seemed to be made with the piano in mind and, in general, how beautifully translated it was from it, so it's a pretty easy choice from me lol)

2. Mike Oldfield - Nuclear (yeah, I totally dig this kind of rock music, so this is also a easy choice from me; loving the vibes here a ton as well, depressing and gloomy, love this shit a lot haha)

3. Hiromi Shibano - Moonlight Museum Ver. 1 (well, from what I heard of Klonoa music, the sound design is just about as good as I expected it to be, but outside of that it just isn't good enough for a nomination composition-wise sadly)

4. Men I Trust - Seven (Garage Session) (pretty neat, but it didn't impress me as much to nominate sadly; love the chords tho lol)

5. Go Ichinose - Lake (as much as I love Go Ichinose and D/P/Pt's music, this is honestly one of the weaker songs in the soundtrack for me, so... yeah, not much else to say about it)

6. Busdriver - Imaginary Places (pretty fast rapping, but otherwise not much else worth talking about)

7. Xiu Xiu - I Luv the Valley OH! (honestly, I actually kinda dig the vocals here due to how slightly desperate and fearful it sounds, but once again, it's kinda meh otherwise)

8. Theophany - Oath to Order (boring, and drags on for way too long. that's all)
Layout by Mathos
moonlight museum - hell yes, this is the real good shit, more of this in the tourney please
lake - putting this anywhere but the top 2 is a crime

-

imaginary places - gets better in the second half. like it quite a bit overall, definitely has charm
gate of steiner - really good for a piano piece
nuclear - good, not spectacular
seven - good easy listening music, though not really standout

oath to order - goes on too long, doesnt really do anything interesting, but it's well-made at least
i luv the valley oh - incredibly annoying, ear-piercing production
soundcloud / bandcamp / twitter / buy/stream my EP / buy my touhou music
Men I Trust - Seven (Garage Session) | its cute and her vibes are good
Go Ichinose - Lake | gyeah its popular but its good. thats why its popular.

Busdriver - Imaginary Places | im like 99% sure this was in a previous tourney. busdriver still good regardless tho.
Xiu Xiu - I Luv the Valley OH! | jamie stewart yells
Hiromi Shibano - Moonlight Museum Ver. 1 | honestly this goes off hard why the klonoa soundtrack have to do that
Mike Oldfield - Nuclear | mike being a trump & brexit supporter aside, this didn't really hit me.
Takeshi Abo - Gate of Steiner -Piano- | its like quaint but it doesn't make me go crazy
Theophany - Oath to Order | really absolutely not for me
Hiromi Shibano - Moonlight Museum Ver. 1
Busdriver - Imaginary Places
OH NO! #thp{>_<2} #thp{>_<3}
I fell asleep and I couldn't vote for any song from the previous set! #smw{-_-2} #fim{:]}

Anyway, as for this set, these are the songs I'll vote for:

MY TWO CHOICES:
1. THEOPHANY - OATH TO ORDER: OH MY GOSH, IT'S PERFECT! It's so deep, epic, it can make you imagine an ancient battle environment... I LOVE IT!#smrpg{<3}#smw{<3}#thp{O_O2} I was remembering The Lord of The Rings while I was listening to it!

Uh, sorry, what was I saying? Oh, yes.
2. HIROMI SHIBANO - MOONLIGHT MUSEUM VER. 1

AND THE OTHER SONGS:
3. Mike Oldfield - Nuclear
4. Takeshi Abo - Gate of Steiner -Piano-
5. Men I Trust - Seven (Garage Session)
6. Busdriver - Imaginary Places
7. Go Ichinose - Lake
8. Xiu Xiu - I Luv the Valley OH!

Now I'm going back to sleep. #thp{zzz4}
Theophany - Oath to Order
Men I Trust - Seven (Garage Session)

What can I say, I'm a sucker for quality orchestral renditions of game music. And I really want to solo over Seven's chord changes after hearing them, those are some good licks waiting to happen.

As for the others, I was close to picking Lake from DPPt, and Gate of Steiner and Moonlit Museum were also pretty good. Oh, and not to mention Imaginary Places just sampling Bach's Badinerie and rapping over it? Certainly unexpected. All in all, really good set.
SET I RESULTS:
Men I Trust - Seven (Garage Session) (12)
Hiromi Shibano - Moonlight Museum Ver. 1 (9)

Go Ichinose - Lake (8)
Mike Oldfield - Nuclear (7)
Takeshi Abo - Gate of Steiner -Piano- (6)
Busdriver - Imaginary Places (5)
Theophany - Oath to Order (4)
Xiu Xiu - I Luv the Valley OH! (1)

Rumor has it that Sakurai follows this tourney and whatever song wins will be added to Smash. :O
Raito & Sakura Ishadou - Unknown Actor
Yuka Tsujiyoko & Takeru Kanazaki - Twilight of the Gods

No I totally didn't accidentally sleep through the Smash Ultimate presentation what are you talking about????? Also this set was kinda bad

1. Soshi Hosoi - Journey into the Brain: This song has a really interesting vibe; can't say I've heard anything like it before. I might listen to the other songs in this video at some point.
2. ICE & KIVΛ - V. [Cytus II]: Looking at this video's comments, it seems like this song remixes a bunch of songs from the first Cytus game, which is pretty cool. That said, the song is solid regardless.
---------------
3. Raito & Sakura Ishadou - Unknown Actor: I liked the first half or so of this song, but it got kind of old after that.
4. Yuuyu - disregard: There are some really cool parts in the second half of this, but the rest is just ???????????????????????????????????
5. Driftrud - The Lush Beds: I wanted to like this song a lot more than I ultimately did, but some of the instruments are a bit too scratchy and ear-piercing for my taste.
6. Taro Kudo - Mother: Meh. This isn't the worst song I've ever heard, but it's also not particularly interesting. I feel like it would be better with different instruments.
7. Yuka Tsujiyoko & Takeru Kanazaki - Twilight of the Gods: This kind of music is really not my thing, at least not for just listening to it by itself.
8. Masafumi Takada & Jun Fukuda - We Are Finally Cowboys: This song didn't really do anything for me.
Check out my WIP romhack!
1. Soshi Hosoi - Journey into the Brain
2. Ice & KIVΛ - V. [Cytus II]

3. Taro Kudo - Mother
4. Masafumi Takada & Jun Fukuda - We Are Finally Cowboys
5. Yuuyu - disregard
6. Raito & Sakura Ishadou - Unknown Actor
7. Yuka Tsujiyoko & Takeru Kanazaki - Twilight of the Gods
8. Driftrud - The Lush Beds

I feel like there's a theme to this set.
Soshi Hosoi - Journey into the Brain
Ice & KIVΛ - V. [Cytus II]

List Soundtrack - List Hacks

Mega Man X3 OSTs
I watched the Smash Ultimate presentation first before doing my picks. No further comment for anti-spoiler reasons.

Here's what I chose...
  • Yuka Tsujiyoko & Takeru Kanazaki - Twilight of the Gods
  • Yuuyu - disregard

And the commentary...
  • Yuuyu - disregard threw me in for an unexpected loop about half-way in, in addition to flipping between two other melodies during the first half. As a matter of fact, this kind of execution (which for me certainly falls under the more unusual section) ultimately convinced me to give this one the slot, because I otherwise mostly couldn't make up my mind.
Raito & Sakura Ishadou - Unknown Actor

Yuka Tsujiyoko & Takeru Kanazaki - Twilight of the Gods
I couldn't find anything to write :| By the way my Youtube channel
Soshi Hosoi - Journey into the Brain
Yuuyu - disregard

funni lavender town song
Driftrud - The Lush Beds
Soshi Hosoi - Journey into the Brain

Driftrud - The Lush Beds
Yuka Tsujiyoko & Takeru Kanazaki - Twilight of the Gods

Yeah yeah, I know, voting for my own track. This was a really good set, I also really enjoyed Unknown Actor and some of the others were good contenders, but in the end none of them induced the same kind of emotion in me that Twilight of the Gods does. (Perhaps I have too much experience with the context of the song and the motifs woven within, though. Oh well, it is what it is.)
Lots of neat songs to choose from in this set!

1. Driftrud - The Lush Beds
2. Yuuyu - disregard
What is a Lunar Magic, and can I eat it?
journey into the brain - unbelievably good, master of his craft, etc
twilight of the gods - very good, pso2-like

-

unknown actor - good, but there are better under night songs
v - really good start, sags in the middle, good again toward the end
we are finally cowboys - good, but could do more
the lush beds - good, though a bit long and i think would be a lot better in context
mother - good, just less special than other songs in the set

disregard - takes too long to get to the good part and then doesn't go far enough. also just feels like two different songs. good production though
soundcloud / bandcamp / twitter / buy/stream my EP / buy my touhou music
Soshi Hosoi - Journey into the Brain (only song I liked this set)
Yuuyu - disregard (not really something I'd ever listen to but it at least stands out)

would've voted axelay if the instrumentation was better, rest is #whocare
