SMWCentral Official Annual Music Tourney #1 2021 - end

MusicOther Contest/Event

Jun Ishikawa & Dan Miyakawa - Taking Over the Halberd
C2C - Down the Road

Polyphia - O.D.
Jeroen Tel - Nine One One
1. sweet trip - Sept (damn, this is pretty cool lol; wasn't expecting to like it this much honestly, but yeah, this was an experience alright, a pretty cool one at that haha)

2. Jeroen Tel - Nine One One (huh, nice, not exactly the kind of shit I would think of when thinking about Jeroen Tel, but I'm not complaining, this is cool as heck lol)

3. C2C - Down the Road (not too bad I guess, but honestly I just liked the Jeroen Tel entry just a bit more sadly, so uh, yeah. pretty cool stuff tho #smrpg{cool})

4. Macroblank - heart sinks (pretty cool as well, nice chill funky jam, but uh. you already know what I'm going to say here, so yeah.)

5. Polyphia - O.D. (ehh, honestly I've heard of these guys before, but the stuff that they do just sounds far too flashy for my tastes, like, good on a technical sense, but just not that good to listen to otherwise; not that it's bad tho, but yeah, as a standalone song it doesn't stand out all too well sadly)

6. New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle (yeah, cool 80s dance track I guess, but it just sounds far too boring for me)

7. Animal Collective - Slippi (honestly, I was going to put this at 8th place, but I actually kind of liked this in a sort of ironic way and made me laugh a bit lol; which I guess gives it some merit over the other track, even if it's small, so I mean, fair enough I suppose :P)

8. Jun Ishikawa & Dan Miyakawa - Taking Over the Halberd (yeah uh, I fucking love Kirby music, but this is literally the most boring and predictable track you could've chosen from it LMAO)

Top 6 is pretty sick and difficult to rank tbh
Sweet Trip - Sept: Certified banger. whole album slaps, peep it.

(Will review rest of the set later if I get the chance. GYM NEVER SLEEPS, GET SWOLE, LEARN LIFE)
1. Jeroen Tel - Nine One One: Groovy. I dig the bass and electronic aspects of this tune, and it takes me to the venue this song is performed in.

2. C2C - Down the Road: I like the influences in this song. It seems to take from bluesy and jazzy and from electronica to a neat effect.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Animal Collective - Slippi: The muffled vocals fit this song well. Overall though it's alright.

Polyphia - O.D.: I get all kinds of signals listening to this song. It's like it takes inspiration from a bunch of different genres of music, and sounds really cool as a result. The drums especially are neat. But I can't leave out the guitar and bass, they are arranged in such an interesting way.

Jun Ishikawa & Dan Miyakawa - Taking Over the Halberd: Don't bug me, playing Kirby.

sweet trip - Sept: This is an interesting piece. Everything is used very sparsely, but it all sounds really large. The composition changes a bit near the end of the song, which is neat.

New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle: A pretty cool electronic song. When it comes to songs like this I usually gravitate towards the drums. And in this they are alright.

Macroblank - heart sinks: Jazzy tune with plenty of horn and airy drums. I really enjoyed this.

Today's picks are...
  • Jeroen Tel - Nine One One
  • Macroblank - heart sinks

For whatever reason, other than the style, a lot of songs seemed to have similar execution in notation in this set. Therefore, I chose two out of the same set due to lack of interest on the others: one as a more standard pick, and a second one as a more laid-back, relaxed pick.
Jeroen Tel - Nine One One (definitely the favorite)
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle (pretty cool also guilt from not voting blue monday at all in a previous tourney which is downright criminal)

Didn't hate anything this set, nothing super strong either though.
1. Jeroen Tel - Nine One One
2. Macroblank - heart sinks

Through the natural beauty of a music tourney, some of these were a bit hard to choose between.
What is a Lunar Magic, and can I eat it?
MY TWO CHOICES:

1. NEW ORDER - BIZARRE LOVE TRIANGLE
2. MACROBLANK - HEART SINKS

HONORABLE MENTIONS:
3. Jeroen Tel - Nine One One
4. Polyphia - O.D.
5. C2C - Down the Road

AND THE OTHER SONGS:
6. sweet trip - Sept
7. Animal Collective - Slippi

I prefer not to put Taking Over the Halberd since I nominated that song.

-------------------------------------------

#smw{-_-Z}
1. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears of a Clown: I've known this song for at least 10 years. It's always been one of my favorites, although this particular upload of it is unfortunately pretty low quality; it also sounds slightly different from the version I usually listen to (maybe an older version of the song?).
2. BANDA MS - El Color de Tus Ojos: My last nomination. In hindsight, I REALLY should've nominated something by Julieta Venegas if I wanted to go the Spanish music route (seriously, go listen to Eres Para Mi and Lento by her); this song's music video has over 800 MILLION VIEWS, which I assume means it's quite overplayed in Spanish-speaking countries, so it might not've been a good pick for a tournament like this...oh well. Either way, it's a really nice song that just has good vibes, so that's why I picked it.
---------------
3. Kfaraday - Crack Her Pelvis: Really interesting song. I'd like to vote for it, but my Top 2 is pretty much set in stone this time around :P
4. Anthony Hopkins - And The Waltz Goes On: I was liking this at first but it got boring quickly
5. +TEK - Ain't Nothing Like a Funky Buster: That song sure existed
6. eebrozgi - The Sea Has Returned (SiIvaGunner Remix): Yep, this is Esperanto alright
7. 40mP feat. GUMI - Eye Examination: Boring
8. MAN WITH A MISSION - My Hero: Really funny music video, but otherwise this song is just nothing
Check out my WIP romhack!
My picks are as following...
  • BANDA MS - El Color de Tus Ojos
  • André Rieu - And The Waltz Goes On

And some commentary...
  • Hey! I recognize Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears of a Clown now that I've heard it! I've heard this song before, but couldn't remember the title of it. Thanks for refreshing my memory of this oldie, but goodie!
  • BANDA MS - El Color de Tus Ojos stands out in my eyes for using a style that I haven't seen too often... though I suspect there's a bit of synth in it. Could be wrong. I ultimately chose this song and André Rieu - And The Waltz Goes On for the variety pack due to lack of interest on a bunch of others... since they all seemed to be competing for the same spot.
BANDA MS - El Color de Tus Ojos
eebrozgi - The Sea Has Returned (SiIvaGunner remix)
