SMWCentral Official Annual Music Tourney #1 2021 - end
1. Ruby My Dear - Croque Monsieur À Disneyland (honestly, this is probably one of the most fucked up and funny songs in this tourney LOL; definitely dig it honestly, pretty cool shit for sure haha)
2. Ne Obliviscaris - Painters of the Tempest (Part II): Triptych Lux (wasn't going to nominate this at first, but honestly it got pretty damn good later on, and definitely enough to justify voting for it lol; plus, I also don't tend to mind "screamo" vocal shit as much as others, not to mention the drums are brutal as heck, which obviously I dig quite a lot )
3. Noriko Hidaka – Fly High (fairly standard sounding 90s mecha anime music; I actually do tend to dig this style quite a bit, but honestly I always hated how similar this music can get to like, every other mecha anime from that time period, and it really tends to blend in a ton, so while I do like it, if it doesn't have anything that stands out it's just not really for me, and sadly this has none of that, so. yeah :V)
4. Masashi Hamauzu - Ypsilon+ [1] (welp, this was definitely quite interesting to listen to lol; sadly tho it doesn't have all that much going for it)
5. Ross Bagdasarian - Witch Doctor (Furby Mix) (I actually didn't hate this nearly as much as I expected, but yeah, it's uh... definitely something alright LMAO)
6. Hitoshi Sakimoto - Electric Power Building (honestly, knowing Sakimoto I would've definitely expected a lot more from this, but this was honestly just too repetitive and boring for my tastes, which is sad since I love Sakimoto's music so much, but whatever I guess)
7. Jimmy Cliff - I Can See Clearly Now (ehh, not too bad I guess. but also kinda not too remarkable either.)
8. The Rapture - Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks (yeah, this was kinda annoying to listen to honestly)
Noriko Hidaka – Fly High : My pick for the set. It has nice trumpets, a slap bass etc. Yeah it’s almost like the stereotypical 90s opening song or whatever but it’s the best in this set easily.
-----
Hitoshi Sakimoto - Electric Power Building: This is much better than I was expecting. It’s a cool atmospheric track and it sounds so nice after listening to the rest of the set. I don’t think it’s interesting enough to actually submit it though.
Jimmy Cliff - I Can See Clearly Now : It's the claritin song
The Rapture - Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks: The second half of the song is them repeating the fucking name of the song over and over again. Manages to be boring and ear grating.
Ross Bagdasarian - Witch Doctor (Furby Mix): Who listens to this shit.
Ne Obliviscaris - Painters of the Tempest (Part II): Triptych Lux: Listened to this and immediately forgot it
Ruby My Dear - Croque Monsieur À Disneyland: This doesn’t appeal to me. Sorry.
Ne Obliviscaris - Painters of the Tempest (Part II): Triptych Lux: Probably the worst song of the tournament so far. Why is it sixteen minutes??? How does a song manage to be worse than “Witch Doctor but Furbys are singing it”. I’m not entirely opposed to metal/screamo but god damn this is 16 MINUTES!!!
1. Noriko Hidaka – Fly High
2. Hitoshi Sakimoto - Electric Power Building
HONORABLE MENTIONS: 3. Jimmy Cliff - I Can See Clearly Now

5. Masashi Hamauzu - Ypsilon+ [1]
AND THE OTHER SONGS: 6. The Rapture - Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks
7. Ne Obliviscaris - Painters of the Tempest (Part II): Triptych Lux
8. Ruby My Dear - Croque Monsieur À Disneyland
SET DD RESULTS: Noriko Hidaka – Fly High (9)
Ruby My Dear - Croque Monsieur À Disneyland (6)(tiebreaker by Koopster)
Hitoshi Sakimoto - Electric Power Building (6)
The Rapture - Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks (5)
Ne Obliviscaris - Painters of the Tempest (Part II): Triptych Lux (5)
Masashi Hamauzu - Ypsilon+ [1] (4)
Jimmy Cliff - I Can See Clearly Now (4)
Ross Bagdasarian - Witch Doctor (Furby Mix) (0)
1. Yutaka Minobe - The Doom (my nomination. honestly, this is just an all around great track, and one that I really would not expect to find in this particular game, but was very pleasantly surprised to find here lol; always love when breakbeat tends to be mixed with jazzy instrumentation like this, such a delight to listen to haha)
2. Anamanaguchi - Subboss Theme [Scott Pilgrim vs. The World] (honestly, this one is more of a throwaway pick just cuz nothing here impressed me all that much in general, but it was the better one of the other tracks, so it's why I'm voting for it I guess; but yeah, not bad chiptune I suppose, it actually sounds a bit like coda at some parts too which is interesting for sure lol)
3. Ween - It's Gonna Be a Long Night (huh, wasn't aware that the same people who made fuckin' Ocean Man also made this LOL; this isn't bad at all actually, liking the energy a ton here, but yeah, it loses out on a vote a sliiiiiight bit for me sadly)
4. ??? - The Mysterious Song (not bad at all I guess, but outside of it sounding like a 80s song it doesn't have all that much going for it sadly)
6. Masahiro Andoh - Second Chance (huh, this is interesting, wasn't expecting this sorta music at all lol; but yeah, I was also expecting something a bit better, and this wasn't it so. yeah.)
7. Dua Lipa - Be The One (ehh, it's fine I guess. not much else to say about it tho)
8. U2 Akiyama - Our Hisoutensoku (okay, now this one... honestly, considering this is actually one of my favorite 2hu tracks, I wasn't really willing to put it this low, but good god, the instruments in this arrangement are really lifeless and doesn't bring nearly as much energy as the original does; the vocals don't suffer from this either which is sorta surprising, it's really just the backing instruments that bring this down as low as it did for me, like seriously, why not just put the original song instead or something that's at least of better or comparable enough quality??? I don't get this at all really)
Anamanaguchi - Subboss Theme [Scott Pilgrim vs. The World]
Yutaka Minobe - The Doom
...and some commentary...
The first group consisted of Ween - It's Gonna Be a Long Night, U2 Akiyama - Our Hisoutensoku, ??? - The Mysterious Song and Anamanaguchi - Subboss Theme [Scott Pilgrim vs. The World]. I picked the last one.
The second group consisted of Masahiro Andoh - Second Chance, Dua Lipa - Be The One, Q Lazzarus - Goodbye Horses and Yutaka Minobe - The Doom. The last one got my slot.
Surprisingly, I ended up managing to get a semi-clean split into two groups with this set, though not always by execution type in this case.
1. ??? - The Mysterious Song: Another unknown song, huh? These are always interesting to me; I'd honestly never heard of any songs like this before Fond My Mind back in Set S, and now this song. As for the song itself, it's pretty cool. I didn't care for the vocals at first, but they grew on me. 2. Q Lazzarus - Goodbye Horses: I was really bored by this song initially, but I enjoyed it more and more as it went on. It's really chill.
-------------- 3. Yutaka Minobe - The Doom: Can't say I've ever heard a Shadow the Hedgehog theme before. Apparently I've been missing out 4. Dua Lipa - Be The One: It's not very often that we get music from current mainstream pop artists in these tourneys...that said, Dua Lipa is a really cool person, but I don't care for her music all that much. Her songs are the type where I don't mind hearing them on the radio whenever they come on, but I hardly ever go out of my way to listen to them. I've never heard this particular song myself, and while I'd say it's definitely one of her better ones, I basically feel the same way about it that I do most of her other music. That said, I can already tell it's gonna be stuck in my head for the next several weeks. 5. Ween - It's Gonna Be a Long Night: This one got annoying VERY quickly. It also just made me think of that Yogi Bear song that was in Cartoon Network Groovies 6. Anamanaguchi - Subboss Theme [Scott Pilgrim vs. The World]: Yep, that's a sub-boss theme if I've ever heard one 7. U2 Akiyama - Our Hisoutensoku: This is Nothing Music 8. Masahiro Andoh - Second Chance: This song is so boring and it just drags on forever. Honestly though, I'm mostly wondering why it's in a driving simulator of all things
subboss theme - i would have picked a different song from this game but its fantastic nonetheless like the rest of the soundtrack
the doom - great sound design, solid track
-
second chance - gets much better in the second half, pretty nice all around
our hisoutensoku - touhou would come last by default but this is a significant improvement over just about any original touhou music
it's gonna be a long night - better than i expected but not very interesting
the most mysterious song - meh
goodbye horses - meh
be the one - no thanks
Masahiro Andoh - Second Chance
U2 Akiyama - Our Hisoutensoku
This was a really nice set from multiple unexpected angles. I especially liked The Doom and The Mysterious Song as well (the latter of which I know I've heard before, perhaps covered by someone else. I had no idea it was such a mysterious song).
Not sure where to put here... or is it? (Also: Yay! Old layout!)Help us raise funds for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. #ДопомагаємоРазом / #HelpTogether “Even if you personally are so dissatisfied with life that you want the world to end, surely the cruel reality is that it will continue on, unchanging. All the better for someone perfectly content, like me.”
