Hopefully this is a good question, because I have a story I wanted to tell about why I was inactive for a few months back in spring to summer. Please note that I don’t blame the people in this story for what transpired. Anyhow, let’s get into the story…
So, back in September 2020, I decided to create this account and hack. It went smoothly for a few months, partly due to school being online, so I could easily work on my hack whenever I wanted (At the time my hack was on a laptop that was on life support, needing to constantly be charging. I only transferred it to a laptop that was actually portable a month or two ago), but once we were back in-person, I didn’t have as much time to hack. In the spare time I did have, I’d picked up the hobby of building models and such (I still have a pile in of unbuilt kits in my room that’s quite large).
Anyhow, summer rolls around, and I find out it’s the Nuptual Flight day. For those who don’t know, that’s the day when queen ants mate and try to start their own kingdom. I enjoy bug catching, and last year I missed it, so I was excited and caught as many as I could.
I had an old ant farm sitting in the garage that hadn’t been used. I like watching this channel called Ants Canada, and knew they had a forum that I could use to help start a colony. I sign up to the forum and look around, and discover some unfortunate news. Apparently the forum was pretty much abandoned. There was only one knowledgeable user left active, and all three of the moderators were inactive, one having been last active 2 months ago, and the other 2 having been away for years. This meant that there were loads of bots (and a few trolls, although even the trolls seemed to have left). I got the answers I needed from the gigachad who had stayed to help the community, and began my work.
Apparently you have to leave them in complete darkness in a test tube undisturbed, with only a wet cotton ball. They also warned people not to check them more then once every week or 2. I check back a week later and they have eggs. I was so excited, I told one of my siblings. Unfortunately, they didn’t get the memo, and they checked on them too often. I soon discovered that when you do this, they eat their eggs and refuse to lay any more. After waiting with no luck, I gave up, set the ants free, and decided to head back to romhacking.
Sorry for the wall of text. I also wanted to mention once again that I don’t blame the forum. People are busy, and the sad reality is that forums are dying off slowly to big social media. I’m nothing but grateful that this site is going so strong. Thank you so much for this community.
-------------------- Every dream is but another reality, never forget…
I haven't really actively hacked (unless you count porting songs for the Music sections here) since like 2015, though prior to that point I would spend a lot of time messing around with the various sections, trying to learn how to do every little thing. I think doing so gave me a lot of momentum, because after I "moved on" I continued to try and find new hobbies and things to learn about. I dunno, I guess I just get a lot of joy from trying out random new skills and things to pick up.
Some examples include:
- Performing instruments (i.e. guitar, drums, harmonica, and most recently piano)
- Writing stories (creepypastas, short stories, etc.)
- Making YouTube videos (educational tutoring)
- Audiobook narrating / voiceovers
Yeah. I like to keep myself busy.
The handomest people in the world are ones who follow my Twitch
All the time. And I also come back multiple times too.
Such other hobbies include:
-Gaming (mostly Steam and Switch)
-Reading actual books
-Making virtual roller coasters and putting the onride POV's on YouTube (I've taken breaks even from that). Also the biggest non-SMW hacking niche on my channel. I could have made separate channels for SMW hack vids and No Limits/No Limits 2 vids (and even sometimes thought about it) but I didn't feel like it, especially since playlists are a thing.
-Writing stylistic suck/parody fanfics
I maybe oversimplifying a bit, as I don't feel like going into super specific detail.
I don't think there's a single human being off the face of earth who hasn't taken a break from ROM hacking at any point, not at all.
I take breaks all the time, and do things to gain inspiration, such as walking, reading books (which I do very rarely), and playing hacks.
I have a bunch of hobbies that I regularly switch betwee, so absolutely. I just lack the willpower to really keep working on the same thing for multiple months without any breaks. Really, my only consistent hobby that I do pretty much all the time is gaming, but besides that, it's always up to my current mood whether I'm currently programming, hacking or whatever.
I don't think anyone hasn't taken a break from hacking. I have a hack that I had slowly been chipping away at but I haven't worked on it in quite a while since the actual level making part of hacking I'm not too crazy about, while I do like overworld creation a lot.
When I'm not working on the hack, which is not something I've touched in a while, I draw a lot, creatively write, or play games. I do also play an instrument (alto saxophone), but I'm not terribly good at it. Also learning an instrument isn't exactly an option open to everyone since good instruments are so expensive.
My writing practice has actually been helping me somewhat come up with what I want to do with my hack, so that's cool. I wanted it to tie-in with the story I'm working on, but at this point, I'm not totally sure that's going to happen in quite the way I was envisioning.
