E-Reader Levels Ported to SMW 30 (Triangle Blocks!)

Super Mario WorldStandardMusicWork in ProgressScreenshotsVideos

Fanatical like a Demon
Hopefully my clickbait title brought you here if you haven't been following my hack. I won't talk too much about it because this is the 3rd C3 I've shown the progress on this hack so I'll leave a link to the hack's thread that has all of it's history. To summarize I wanted to make a hack to celebrate SMW's 30th Year and added a ton of content (combination of SMA2 and SMM2 plus more). I still had ideas that never made it to version 2 such as beta assets like Bowser and thought how rad it'd be to showcase more beta assets with the E-Reader levels ported to SMW! This way I can showcase more beta GFX, enemies, and even put more bosses. It's been a huge struggle getting this in time for C3, in fact I didn't even finish. Only about 2/3rds of the E-Reader levels have been ported over but I tried to give the fun ones higher priority. Thanks to lx5, I was able to have triangle blocks that function just like in sma4 and BOY ARE THEY FUN!

New in V3:
-E-Reader Levels (includes custom blocks, gimmicks, and sprites)! To enter an E-Reader level (Bonus Levels in SMW 30), visit Yoshi's House, input the level's code, and unpause the game. Codes are in message boxes scattered throughout the game. BONUS LEVELS CAN ONLY BE ENTERED AFTER ALL 96 EXITS ARE FOUND.
-Codes can now only be entered in Yoshi's House can can no longer be entered in Top Secret Area.
-Hard Mode levels have gone through revamping based on criticism and feedback. Most notably rng generator based (fake difficulty) is almost nonexistent and I instead opted to use conditional map16 to change the layout of levels in hard mode (some such as the maze room in Bowser's castle is so good).
-Enemy spam has been reduced and more cleverly placed.
-Fixed a lot of bugs/oversights, particularly a fatal crash when collecting all Dragon Coins and rather finishing the level, quitting it would result in glitched up cutscenes and end with a hard lock.
-Redid Koopa Kid bosses in hard mode.
-Redid Bowser's fight in hard mode, oh yeah, it's hard now (he truly is King Koopa).
-New original custom music that plays homage to the classics like smb1 underground, castle, and an smw styles smb1 athletic theme which I will link.
-The SNES Overworld Map theme is back instead of the SMA2 version as well as Star Road for Star Road. Finding all 96 exits will change the songs back to sma2 overworld and Space World.
-A more accurate port of the smm2 Desert theme (source of the accordion was found (thanks Pinci for the lead and ofc musicalman for making the brr samples!). I'll probably upload it on YouTube tomorrow and link it here.

Todo:
-Finish the rest of the E-Reader levels (2 more custom bosses and yes, there will be custom autoscrolling levels!).
-Fix classic Bowser (this one sprite.... oh my God...) yeah... it animates janky but at least you get a rough idea of what could be). There MAY be an updated that fixes it to look more "professional" tomorrow.
-Integrate Luigi's SMA2 physics. Yeah... there was still bugs with it.
-Integrate Korone's BGM theme in some manner. The initial plan was a cheat code that'd replace the castle themes with it but everytime I kept trying to find a free ram to use as a flag it'd crash the game. I'll leave a link so you can hear the port.
-Polish and take any more feedback I receive.

Not sure if I missed anything but there ya go. BACKUP IF YOU WANT TO UPDATE FROM v2 TO v3! SRM MAY BE INCOMPATIBLE! UPDATE AT YOUR OWN RISK. RE-ACTIVATE HARD MODE IF YOU UPDATE OR LEVELS WILL MEESS UP AND POSSIBLY SOFT LOCK YOU

FAQs
"How do I activate hard mode?"
Go to Yoshi's house, pause the game, enter the Konami Code, unpause.

"I can't find a secret exit anymore. Is this a bug? Can you tell me how to get it?"
This is not a bug. Certain secret exits (particularly ones that lead to star roads) have been moved around to encourage more exploration and bring a sense of new feeling to the levels. No I won't tell you how to find it, it'd ruin the purpose.

"What the heck? I can't use any of the special Yoshis outside of their levels?"
Special Yoshis serve as a reward and can only be used outside their levels once all Dragon coins and all 96 exits have been found in normal mode, while in hard mode each level has to be passed at least once via goal tape (finding all exits and coins won't allow you to use them in hard mode if all levels haven't been passed in hard mode, this is to avoid simply passing the game on normal and abusing them in hard mode to easily pass the levels).

"I can't open the hack in Lunar Magic."
Of course not, you don't need to open it in Lunar Magic to play it.

I do regret I wasn't able to finish everything I wanted and I barely made it with everything I was trying to fix these last 3 days. I did want to have different graphics for the feather like maybe the wings or plane helmet from the beta rips but it'd be so much of a hassle. i could potentially add this once I finish the last batch of E-Reader levels. I also wanted to integrate the Tanooki leaf but without having to add lx5's powerup patch bc 100% certain that will break so much. If I can add it in a waay that won't mess up the cape it'll be found in the E-Reader levels and you'll be able to take it to other levels if you pass the current level with it or exit the level. I'll try my best not to keep posting updates everytime someone finds a bug or I finish a new level that way I can release everything with the next batch of levels. I do expect at least one update if the Bowser (classic) animation gets fixed. Enjoy!

It's really neat to see how far this hack has progressed since the past year! I love to see hacks that go for the authentic SMW experience like this.

All of this is promising looking. I ought to play this hack one of these days. Also I kinda like your "classic-ified" take on some of the songs from SMM SMB1. So does this mean that your SMAS+SMW Ultimate OST is going to be updated again?

Oh, this is pretty awesome! I really loved the E-Reader levels in SMB3. My only problem with them was having SMB3 physics and not having any checkpoints. Just playing them with SMW's physics will already make a notable difference, I think.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
This is looking really neat looking forward to the finished product good luck

LAYOUT FOOTER:
Your remake of the e-reader levels reminds me, I don't wanna play "No Time to Dawdle!" ever again.
Kirbo was here
I've never got around to playing the E-Reader Levels but from what I've seen of them they are really interesting in how they mix a variety of Classic Mario elements all together.

Purple Triangles look really fun to play around with however.
Those Classic-Styled remixes sound really faithful to SMW and are a blast to listen to.

Fantastic Work as always Ladiesman217! #smrpg{<3}
Fantastic work man! Been following your hack for a while and it make me happy seeing it get even better with each update.
It's good to see how this hack is going very strong! I can't wait to play updated version of the hack very soon.

Great work, LadiesMan217!!! Pyon sugoi!

Really impressive.

Btw, how are you porting the E-Reader levels? Are you somehow copying the level data from Super Mario Advance 4 or are you doing it purely by eye? I have a long term aspiration to get these levels into the SNES version, although without either the raw level data nor a reliable level editor, it'll be a real slog.

Thank you! Yes I love that authentic feel which why I tried my best this time around to make hard mode more genuine and lass ENEMY SPAM WAAHH. Quite a bit of edits also had to be made to make the e-reader levels feel like they were an extension of smw but at the same time I really went for hat beta aesthetic and feel.

Glad to hear and yes, the SMAS+W Ultimate OST will be getting an update with some of these tracks. I forgot to upload the Swimming theme, I'll try upload some time this week and post it here.

Yeah it does! Some things do have to be edited though since smb3 you can jump higher and farther and some obstacles like items can't be taken in through doors or timed status like POW or Star can't be carried through levels, etc. I like it though bc it gives a new approach on to the level and how to go about solving certain puzzles/maze levels.

Which one is that one again? The list I'm using has different names (lol like why).

Thanks bud! I had a blast making the Yoshi bongo pattern for the underground theme! The triangle blocks I feel definitely will be the highlight of these levels bc they're so fun and make coin collecting satisfying!

Comments like these is what make some of these stressful obstacles encountered worth it (seriously, these last few days have been so damn stressful to release something stable on time, and even then I already caught oversights which ima talk about in a sec).

I'm using this and p much going by eye since I don't really have a way to easily grid it in a fast manner.

Alright so I have some great news! A vtuber who goes by Lzy Susan is going to be streaming SMW 30 this Sunday at 1 pm EST incase anyone is interested in checking her out! It looks like she also recently got partnered with twitch. Now some... bad news for me that comes with that... I NEED TO MAKE SURE I DON'T MISS THINGS AND EMBARRASS MYSELF. I'm going to make notes of oversights I've caught so far. Unless you've already found all 96 exits already you won't run into these issues yet.
-In Doors o' Plenty I switched a blue pow out for the yellow ! switch but forgot to replace the blue pow door with a regular one rendering the level unpassable.
-There's Dragon Coin Blocks which are solid and become coins with coins when 5 or more are collected in a level but in Chill Cavern you can press a blue pow, get the last Dragon Coin, and even though the blocks turn into coins, they'll be acting like used blocks bc the pow is still on.
-For whatever reason, sprites despawn horizontally in roughly less 16 pixels offscreen in levels with the extended dimension sizes. This is annoying and I can't for the life of me figure out why and no LM setting has worked. If anyone wants to debug this/help me find a solution, feel free to DM me.
-Sometimes Yoshi Bongos will play in Ghost Houses if you skip the no Yoshi intro fast enough. AMK bug, can't really fix that.

I'll probably end up doing a full play-through on my own to catch anything else bc Sunday is sort of an "official" deadline this week T_T.

Your effort in this hack has been quite impressive. Didn't expect you would add e-readers level in the mix too. I hope you succeed in finishing this project. I had tons of fun with Hard Mode, in general.

It's greta to hear you actually fun despite some odd choices I did. I think its more fleshed out now and more fair than just spamming generators/enemies. I recall chocolate island 2 just having too much enemies and outrageous. Bowser definitely lacked challenge and I think the inclusion of 1 (2) of his most loyal servants is there in battle with him
(Kamek and Kammy Koopa)
.

Notes about SMW 30, I fixed an issue with the ! switch being invisible in Doors o' Plenty (I forgot to fill the colors in the palette since global exanimation palettes are off in that level). If fixed the problem with Yoshi Coin Blocks by simply making theme turn into animated dotted blocks and behave like tile 25 to not have to deal with the coin animation and the blue pow being on bc global uberasm code is a complex mess at this point and I don't want to break anything I won't catch. Bowser now animatedd better but yeah, I can definitely use a better port of the sprite instead of an upscaled one that originated from mikey's. Still can't figure out why sprites easily despawn in the e-reader levels so I'll have see if someone can debug that for me bc it is very odd. As of right now I think something else I caught is the classic paragoomba that drops microgoomba ends up getting behind tiles so it messes up Inner Maze bc it appears invisible when dropping microgoombas.

I've got more songs I uploaded that I ported so have at em.
