it was close
1. Marvel vs. Capcom - War Machine (14)
These samples are used in a really great way like I haven't heard before, and it is executed perfectly from a porting standpoint. Fantasic song, and easily my favorite song from this whole pack given the energy.

2. Final Fantasy X-2 - Memory of Lightwaves (13)
These feels in this song are nice and smoothing, and the instruments are near perfect. The only issue I hear is that the strings are louder than in the original, which makes these downsampled string samples more noticable for the worse.

3. Sonic Adventure - Leading Lights (12)
I like how this song has been heavily changed for SPC transition while having the same melody, and the drums are suprisingly clean and combined together with another drum overlay, it makes the percussion that more realistic on SNES. The part at 0:28-0:31 is missing some synth effects, making this section noticably empty.

4. La Keyboard XYU - 07_00_06 (11)
I wasn't expecting a keyboard demo to show up, let alone one that is on an actual console.
The port is nicely done, and is mixed better than whatever the original mix is, nice job
rearranging this to SMW instruments.

5. Kingdom Hearts II - Dearly Beloved (10)
Interestingly enough, there are two variants of the same song within these 14 entries, which is hilarious. The mixing here is better than it's predecessor, especially when the @6 gets used (o), and I like the custom piano samples used here, even if it's different (these samples could be quietened a bit so it doesn't clash with the actual melody). Nice job with this arrangement.

6. Katamari Damacy - Lonely Rolling Star (9)
Interesting song choice to port and I like the effort put into this.
The samples used could use some work, like having the open hi-hat used another sample as it is too high-pitched as of right now, and some samples don't fit well, especially the SDK crystal, which is a FM sample unlike the others which are mostly real instruments.

7. Mario Kart Double Dash - Mushroom Bridge (8)
Naturally, there won't be a console without Mario games, and here we are.The port is faithful to the original which is nice, even adding in odd instruments that are present originally. It's an okay song that fits along the rest of Mario's soundtracks.

8. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - Promised Grace (7)
The usual field theme you would expect from an RPG, and the instruments are quite nicely for it. Not the most adventureous of the themes, however more noticably none of the instruments have a release,
which makes parts of the song sound cut-offy, in contrast to the high echo volume it uses.

9. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - Training Mode (6)
Another port from the Marvel franchise, and this time it's more jazz focused which will be hard to get in. The low brass instrument sounds flat off, especially with the staccato nature of it, and the rest of instruments are okay, but I guess it is close to what the original uses.

10. Sonic Adventure - Invincibility (5)
This one isn't really a complete song, so it's gonna fall hard in execution. The additionally chorded choir sample sounds great, but having the only drums in the port use inverted panning makes the mix sound muddier than intended.

11. Persona 4 - Heartbeat, Heartbreak (4)
This one is a bit tough to vote, especially considering the original song uses vocals aswell. The string/piano parts of the song are a nice addition, however the vocals/@0 part is switching the key of the entire song as soon it appears, which makes a less than optimal chord transition, and the background organs from the original aren't audible in this rendition.

12. Sonic Mega Collection Plus - Extras (3)
Interesting how this song appears in all of the consoles mentioned by the thread. This song starts of with the same chord than the Battlemaniacs theme, and the second chords at the intro
has a note that plays the same the note in two channels (Pitch 070B in SPC channel 3 & 4), which makes part of it sound louder than the note in channel 5. It's otherwise a cool port for SMW, but not something I would listen in the background on a regular basis.

13. Pikmin 2 - Perplexing Pool (2)
Nice ambience tones, and I like the SNES equivalent samples that are used, although the SMW steel drum is a bit loud and grating in this mix which makes the ambience more dangerous to listen.
It's a fine port.

14. Kingdom Hearts I - Dearly Beloved (1)
A classic theme rearranged using solely the SMW samples, which is nice. The song itself ends a bit short and this port has the opposite problem of having the chords too quiet compared to the piano. The default ASDR @0 is sustaining longer than expected.

This one was hard to vote on, and there is a lot competing sampled songs this time, which is interesting and should be done more often I think.
I ended up not submitting an entry to this due to being unable to fit my initial port in 64k and choosing to do an orchestral song which requires dynamics beyond what the SNES has to offer, which I regret now that it took some more time away than I intended.
couldn't finish my thing in time so heeeeere we are

1. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - Training Mode
Deciding between this and Leading Lights was a tough task, but the cleanliness of the mix tied with these absolutely crisp samples got this one ahead for me. Outstanding work!

2. Sonic Adventure - Leading Lights
Also suuuuuper good and enjoyable, it's just so full and groovy. The surround feels ever so slightly overdone for my taste, but cmon this is still a jam

3. Final Fantasy X-2 - Memory of Lightwaves
Everything comes in and out really smoothly thanks to the dynamics, which's great especially for this song's atmosphere. The end punch scared me tho LOL

4. La Keyboard XYU - 07_00_06
Ohhh yeah these chords are funky, and go super well with SMW samples. I even checked the original out of curiosity, and dude this port pulled off many improvements and sounds a lot more satisfying like hands down. Great job!!!

5. Marvel vs. Capcom - War Machine
Great port that, even though gets somewhat muddy sometimes, is really full of energy and has some pretty cool dynamics and effects in it. Could definitely sound even better with a punchier snare, without echo - maybe with no echo at all in the drums.

6. Kingdom Hearts II - Dearly Beloved
Channel #6's piano sounded a bit rough in the highest octaves since I believe the sample used isn't supposed to go up in that range, also the piano in channel #5 sounds detuned, otherwise really well made.

7. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - Promised Grace
While it kinda lacks some articulation to sound more like real instruments akin to the original, that didn't damage the final outcome of the port too much and I do like it a lot.

8. Mario Kart Double Dash - Mushroom Bridge
Pretty alright, I quite enjoy the instrument choices here - well maybe not the @1 bass. Mixing is mostly fine too, but the @6 is quite loud and the drums don't punch enough because of that.

9. Pikmin 2 - Perplexing Pool
I liked this more than I expected lol. The leads and the @7 could be quieter, though

10. Sonic Mega Collection Plus - Extras
Does its thing there, didn't stick with me that much but the idea behind the arrangement is pretty cool.

11. Kingdom Hearts - Dearly Beloved
I guess it just felt too brief, but it's a cute song.

12. Katamari Damacy - Lonely Rolling Star
Definitely a solid, well ported one, just ehhh the instrumentation didn't particularly excite me, it's a bit on the weak end

13. Persona 4 - Heartbeat, Heartbreak
I can see some care was put into the arrangement, however the panning is rather disorienting, and the harmonies don't really support each other to even resemble the original's progression.

14. Sonic Adventure - Invincibility
I actually really like the pads! The panning with surround in the drums is jarring though, and the port as a whole is more on the simple side of things.
14pts: La Keyboard XYU - 07_00_06: Oh man the JAM!

My 1st romhack in progress (testing avaiable)...
(beta)
1. Marvel vs. Capcom - War Machine
This sounds excellent! The instruments, panning, echo, it all comes together. Can't think of a single nitpick 8>

2. Sonic Adventure - Leading Lights
A cool, unique track with some fun syncopated rhythms, really close to the original too. The drums sound great. Awesome work. :D

3. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - Training Mode
Really clean work. The echo doesn't quite sound right on the drums and tenor sax, it kind of muddies up the lower end, but it can probably be remedied with the FIR filter, or turning it off for those channels. But it's an awesome port overall.

4. La Keyboard XYU - 07_00_06
Really cool port, great use of vanilla samples too. Think this one would have benefited from being sampled since the original has a very distinct synth bass sound, but you did an excellent job with what you had available.

5. Mario Kart Double Dash - Mushroom Bridge
Awesome vanilla port, sounds exactly like Mushroom Bridge but SMW. Maybe a little bit more echo would give it something like the sense of space in the original, but excellent job.

6. Katamari Damacy - Lonely Rolling Star
Cool cover overall. The thing that immediately sticks out is that the samples in the original instrumentation have really abrupt release time, here they kind of linger so it doesn't have the same punchiness. The square lead melody similarly is missing some staccato and pitch bends. Still, good effort, with a little more care taken w/r/t the note releases and staccato you could definitely get it pretty close to the original tune.

7. Final Fantasy X-2 - Memory of Lightwaves
This sounds like a really tricky one to recreate. A lot of nice details from the original are recreated quite well like the synth blurps and good use of the pianos. The pads sound perhaps a little clumsy, since they're handled very delicately in the original. The ending is unfortunately rather jarring, with the echo feedback creating some unpleasant effects. I recommend messing around with the FIR filter a bit to get some control over the echo feedback. That aside it's a very nice port and definitely an ambitious song to enter.

8. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles -Promised Grace
Definitely recognizable as being from this soundtrack so good job there. However it's missing some of the fullness and energy of the original. Two big things that could make it sound closer to the original is more emphasis on the percussion, especially the tambourine and getting better reed instruments, since the samples used lack a lot of bite and buzziness. Of course it might be hard to find a decent samples for crumhorn, but maybe a high quality sax sample would suffice.

9. Kingdom Hearts II - Dearly Beloved
Good job on the instrumentation and dynamics for the most part. The honky tonk piano sounds a bit inappropriate for the tone, which unfortunately subtracts from the intended effect.

10. Pikmin 2 - Perplexing Pool
Pretty faithful in a lot of ways, the mix feels maybe a little bit off, with a lot of the parts in the higher pitch ranges taking too much prominence. Overall it's quite accurate to the original.

11. Kingdom Hearts - Dearly Beloved
Sounds pretty good for what I'm guessing is an unsampled port? A lot of the original's volume fades and dynamics seem absent here which makes it come across as a bit flat, so it doesn't have the intended emotional impact.

12. Sonic Mega Collection Plus - Extras
I don't think the vanilla samples were a great fit for this sort of track, that aside a lot of the held notes get a bit gratting as there's no variation to them, some subtle tremolo or vibrato can go a long way to keep things interesting.

13. Sonic Adventure - Invincibility
There's definitely something lacking here, without the rock guitar riffs it sounds quite empty. Besides that the rhythm part is inaccurate.

14. Persona 4 - Heartbreak, Heartbreak
Was going to say it sounded oddly empty, but after looking up the original it's just missing too many notes to sound much like the same song, unfortunately. I know chord sampling can be a pain but a lot of the time it's the only way to pull something like this off, especially when so much of the song's character comes from the harmony of the closed chords. The original also has a much more staccato feel to the playing, which is absent here.

Pretty tough choices between these songs, I liked them all. Good luck, entrants!
What is a Lunar Magic, and can I eat it?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaand time's up! Thank you everybody for voting! I'll have results figured out pretty soon.
14 entries...14 voters...14...uh...hours until results? I don't think that's actually true. Anyway,

Here are the results for 120HoSPC#9!

In third place, at 162 points, the most obscure game(?) of the list. It's
La Keyboard XYU - 07_00_06 by sincx!

In second place, at 170 points, with no relation to the KISS song, it's
Marvel vs. Capcom - War Machine's Theme by Segment1Zone2!

And in first place, with 175 points...watch out, this award is gonna crash!! Aaahh!!

Give it up for
Sonic Adventure - Leading Lights by FYRE150!

Wow, that was a close top 3! Here's the full list of entries, names and scores:

No DQs, hurray! Trophies will be awarded shortly. As for
FYRE150
, please contact me to receive your game genie code (or regular digital game code, whichever you prefer).

That's all for now! Don't forget to tune in for SuperFamicompo later this year. Now make like a Dolphin and get outta here!

Wow, that's markedly better than I expected to do with my rushed and under-polished entry. Great job everyone, and shoutouts to Beruga for doing essentially the same song as me, haha (I almost did the KH1 version myself but opted not to). I was rather surprised by the lack of Nintendo songs compared to others, since I figured Mario or Zelda might hold some popularity over other franchises. But, I'm content with the turnout for the contest, and I look forward to the next one! (In the meantime, I'll be in the corner tweaking my entry a little more so I can actually submit it...)
embed fail!!

I was pleasantly surprised to find people took a liking to my entry. Had I started earlier, it would've been more polished, yet a stroke of genius took over me the day before the deadline that I knew I needed to fulfill. Jokes aside, thanks for the comments and criticisms and congrats to everyone who participated, especially the winners!
ngl, if I wasn't so demotivated rn I could've definitely made something, especially since I already wanted to cover something from a Gamecube game (F-Zero GX) for a while now, which would've been a perfect way to get something done while still participating in something meaningful enough; but yeah, I had to decide against it since I'm still not quite there yet, and I also shouldn't force it either I suppose, plus I can still do these at a later time so I'm not too miffed by this lol

I definitely didn't expect this, Wow! Thanks to everyone who voted, participated and organized this contest, it was a ton of fun and a really interesting challenge for me since I don't tend to port anything from this generation. #smrpg{y}

I've wanted to do this kind of remix for a while now, to sort of, show off the capabilities of the Samples of Insanity BRR pack and bring it some very well deserved attention since it can be used to produce quite accurate ports. (NES or otherwise)

The guitar dynamics where the hardest thing to get right considering SOI doesn't offer that much different guitar sets (as well as lacking a decent guitar scream that would fit the other overdriven ones), so I had to improvise and come up with something interesting and different.

As for the percussion, Yes, I agree, I should've used some stronger snare sample, but I didn't really find a good strong snare sample that would fit the song and be accurate at the same time (didn't want to use @29, just for that reason)

Anyway enough of me rambling, once again, congrats to everyone who took part in any shape or form, you're all awesome! #smrpg{<3}
I feel bad for not voting. :(

Still cool to see how some music has been remixed onto the SNES.

Some question towards the leading lights porter: Is there any reason why the 0:28 is missing the voice? Even ignoring that it's a missing part of the original, it also sounds extremely empty and is my biggest point of criticism with this not perfect but still fairly port (the next worst issue, too high attack of the trumpet, isn't even half as bad).
That top 3 was really close.

Originally, I started out porting something completely different before scrapping that and starting from scratch (and, man, was I in a rush...). That is to say, I couldn't have anticipated this outcome. Thanks to everyone who listened and voted! :D This was a lot of fun.

Oh yeah, I kinda wanted to say something about that War Machine port since I know the track fairly well, but since I wasn't in the mood to judge any of the entries this time I just kinda didn't bother especially since most of the other ports (outside of the Leading Lights and La Keyboard XYU ones) didn't interest me too much (no offense to anyone btw)

basically, it isn't bad, but the main complaint I have with it is that the pitch bends just don't bend high enough at all (and in some cases tend to bend too high up as well), which kinda takes me away from the port a lot, which sucks because other than that it's actually pretty solid lol; also some brass stabs are missing from 0:16, though since the original is a Arcade track with much more options for channels/polyphony than the SNES allows, it's understandable why it would be missing, but otherwise yeah, not bad at all haha

Sadly I wasn't motivated enough to enroll here,
I probably would have chosen some Sonic Adventure 2 song and would have rushed it.

Sadly I wasn't committed enough to vote because I didn't know enough the songs that were ported.

Still I hope to be in a better place to participate to the next and I wish to congratulate the top 3 and everyone who participated.

Understandable, I had to gauge a lot of the pitch bends by ear since there was no other way of going about it, even with a decent midi I found.
As for the Brass Stabs the midi didn't have them (or I just missed them, also possible) and if they were present in the midi, as you said, there isn't enough channels for it on the SNES to house them. =P
Thanks for the insight though! #smrpg{y}

Edit:
Oh and also, since I can't get it SMW Compatible (without omitting too many samples), I'm going to be leaving the zip for this track riiiiiiight here, in case anyone finds a use for it later on (or feels like improving it).
For my first music contest, I am happy with wear my port ended up. I am still learning a lot about samples and the commands with AddmusicK, but I appreciate all of the feedback and having the chance to learn and improve for the future.
