SMWCentral Official Annual Music Tourney #2 (2022) - Preliminary Round: Set V

Non-SMW

Ghost - Square Hammer: This appealed to me a lot more.
Sevish - Starfish: The song is so trippy and so is the video

Modern Talking - No Face, No Name, No Number: Remarkable and so close in beat to their old songs I thought it was an old song. I like it.
TWO-MIX - Just Communication: I'll echo Fullcannon in that this has 90s vibes. It just doesn't come to my top 2, but it shall go to my playlist.
Akira Ishiguro - Aerobics of Alien: A long song that's actually enjoyable? How come? Not gonna place it at the top because it's not usually the kind of song I listen to regularly.
Genesis - The Cinema Show: Cool, but not my thing, especially when its rhythm is very inconsistent all the way through. It does pick up the pace more towards the end, though.
HOME - Hold: It goes absolutely nowhere.
Parokya ni Edgar - Picha Pie: #smw{-_-Z}
1. Genesis - The Cinema Show
2. TWO-MIX - Just Communication

Honourable mention goes to Aerobics of Alien, very fun music with a very talented drummer to boot!
What is a Lunar Magic, and can I eat it?
Square Hammer and Aerobics of Alien.
My two picks
1. Two-Mix - Just Communication
2. Sevish - Starfish

I'm really excited to dive into some more Two-Mix. It was a toss-up between Sevish and Genesis, but I had to pick Sevish because it was new to me and I have already heard soooo much Genesis in my life lol. So Sevish stood out more to me in that regard. How I would rank the rest...

3. Genesis - The Cinema Show
4. Akira Jimbo - Aerobics of Alien
5. HOME - Hold
6. Ghost - Square Hammer
7. Modern Talking - No Face, No Name, No Number
8. Parokya ni Edgar - Picha Pie
Sevish - Starfish
Akira Ishiguro - Aerobics of Alien
(honorable mention: Genesis - The Cinema Show)
I liked a lot of these! My picks are

Sevish - Starfish:
Such a banger. What’s not to love? 22edo + polyrhythm + groove

Akira Ishiguro - Aerobics of Alien:
Incredible drumming and an all around awesome sound
Cutting it real close to the deadline so I'll keep it short.

Honorable mentions:

Frums - Options EX

Frumious Banderfunk was a cool listen overall and The Bounty Hunter was... quite the experience! Wonderful song! I love when they succeed in mixing genres together. Another good one who does that is Igorrr.

So... I'm not exactly aware why I gave priority to Frumious Banderfunk over the honorable mentions. Maybe it reminded me of my youth when I only listened to metal music, or the guitars mesmerized me. I wish I could have kept Options EX and Incredible Machinery, too.

We'll see what the vote brings ahah.

NO?
Estradasphere - The Bounty Hunter
Incredibly based actually

Blind Guardian - A Voice in the Dark
This has the entire energy of a PS1 FMV

T-Square - Takarajima
Beach level

CobaltBW - Incredible Machinery
God, you had me until the 2008-ass chiptune lead

NO
Kid Lib - Yeah Uh!
I have some respect for this but honestly it just makes me fucking uncomfortable. (After listening to the whole thing, I *had* respect for this, but it feels like it just kinda loops halfway through, so less respect.)

TwinCity - Maybe I'm Just Tired of Love
Feel mean about actually hating this
this is from best to least best because this round is fucked up
Estradasphere - The Bounty Hunter
this one's lovely, I don't know how this set is so stacked

Levin Minnemann Rudess - Frumious Banderfunk
going right into my favorites playlist, this one's so damn good

Frums - Options EX
same with this one, very my thing

CobaltBW - Incredible Machinery
very vgm-y for non vgm tourney but idc because it's real great (but please find a new thumbnail thank you)

Kid Lib - Yeah Uh!
this one is so weird and I love it

T-Square - Takarajima
I love t-square, but I think this is on the lower end of their tracks for me
still fucks but comparatively, eh

Blind Guardian - A Voice in the Dark
it's decent, not exactly my thing but I enjoyed the listen

TwinCity - Maybe I'm Just Tired of Love
it's okay
Not super attached to any of these songs, but jeez it was hard to pick just 2 lol

1. Estradasphere - The Bounty Hunter: Already a serious contender to win the whole tourney. I also called the previous tourney's winner so I do not say this lightly
2. Kid Lib - Yeah Uh!: Had zero expectations for an artist named "Kid Lib" but I actually did like this one a lot (although I think the length could've been cut down quite a bit). Points for being unique, though
---------------
3. TwinCity - Maybe I'm Just Tired of Love: Very interesting lyrics. I don't listen to rap a whole bunch myself, but this would be a good song to vibe to. I like it. These tourneys always have a massive drought of rap songs, so I respect this pick
4. Frums - Options EX: Don't like this quite as much as Credits EX, but it's still good. It'd probably do very well in a weaker set
5. CobaltBW - Incredible Machinery: This feels like that one song that would play in a game and make everyone be all like "THIS SONG IS SO GOODGRBJKGRVFCGTBGRVF"
6. T-Square - Takarajima: Completely different vibe from the T-Square song last year, and also not nearly as good in my opinion. This one doesn't manage to hold my attention the whole time like last year's
7. Levin Minnemann Rudess - Frumious Banderfunk: It's fine, I guess? Didn't stand out much to me tbh
8. Blind Guardian - A Voice in the Dark: I enjoyed this for about 30 seconds before it got annoying

(1) T-Square - Takarajima (85/100)
Fantasic jazz fusion performance as I expected from T-Square, which made some of the most iconic songs in here.
I really like how the syntheic flute sounds here, giving off the perfect feeling of summer, and it's being
composed in a slower tempo made it easier to hear harmonics and it's overall production quality.
This might be my favorite song of this set so far, and likely going to be overall for a long time.

(2) CobaltBW - Incredible Machinery (nom 1)
One of my nominations for this tourney, which used to be coincidentally another rock song
like Set B's first song before I replaced it with a more synthetic instrumental theme.
It was one of the entries that originated from Sample Pack Contest XV, which only had a select few user-submitted samples
available to make complete songs out of it, and the last one I contributed a song to before it got more restricted and complex.
This song was a fantasic ride as soon as heard it on the synclisten with it's chipped sections and powerful solos,
so I ended up nominating this song here aswell as it is a example of how chip-based fusion can sound.

(3) Estradasphere - The Bounty Hunter (62/100)
This song reminds me a lot of onestop.mid (esp. at 2:10), where it's a bunch of genres put together into one song,
and this seems to be a more acoustic version of it with real instruments and all that quality stuff.
It's great for what is it, however most of the styles utilized here are quite overdone and seems to heavily
rely on action movement and story telling which has been obsoleted over the years, and has the same issues of
unconnected sections like The Cinema Show and it's likely inspirations which lead the song down a bit imo.

(4) Frums - Options EX (58/100)
Naturally there is a long song in here aswell, similar to the last set.
The cut-in vocals are a good idea and some of the leads have potential, but it's kinda overshadowed
by the build-up sections that take up most of the time.
5:41 to 6:22 would be a highlight for me.

(5) Levin Minnemann Rudess - Frumious Banderfunk (54/100)
This song seems to combine rock elements with prog and?
It has some great ideas for one half of the song which make it interesting,
tho it also has it's disorientating parts as derived from it's similarly metal subgenre,
for better or worse. Sounds like something serious is going to happen soon enough.

(6) Blind Guardian - A Voice in the Dark (50/100)
It's a good song with electric guitar that suit the rock style well, ultimately not the biggest fan of this genre.
At least the vocal's quality seems to decent and not overdriven like the backing guitar, which usually seems to be a
consequence of relying on overtones for lyrical sections, which would get overbearing otherwise.

(7) TwinCity - Maybe I'm Just Tired of Love (16/100)
You know a song is going to be mediocre if it literally contains "love" in it's title,
as it wasn't enough to hear it in lyrics ubiquitously nowadays.
It's a minimal of a song, where the backing part and chorus seems to be non-existant, so it's
stale by design, yet somehow still more listenable than whatever the third song was, as the vocals
here are at least toned correctly, even if the lyrics are questionable to say the least.

(8) Kid Lib - Yeah Uh! (9/100)
I still think it's an extremely cursed idea to high-pitch vocal shots into songs, and it feels weird to hear it scream over.
Outside of it, the song seems to consist solely of drum breaks and no lead instruments, making it a chore to
listen to if it was intended to be it's main focus.
