1. Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness - Agate Village (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by 7 people.
YouTube
Probably not my favorite song in the game (I played XD specifically, and later learned that Colosseum had it too), but I always have memories of liking going to the village for the music, so something about it just stuck with me. I was a little surprised to see so many people get it, but then again, it is a Pokémon game, so I should’ve known better, haha.
2. Death’s Door - Avarice (Chosen by Doctor No)
Guessed by 2 people.

Bandcamp
The idea of a “mimic” took a really neat turn in Death’s Door, and this was the best track on an all-around amazing soundtrack in my opinion. It’s a great arena-battle theme, and one of the most memorable moments of the game is when you first experience it.
3. The Hex - Coming In Hot (Vicious Galaxy) (Chosen by Doctor No)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube /
Bandcamp
A game-within-a-game! People may know Pony Island and Inscryption, but The Hex is the hinge in the Daniel Mullins-verse that sets up a lot of the bigger world. Jonah Senzel, who has done the music for all of the Mullins games, really shows off his range in this game, with this track coming from the Space Marine portion.
4. Hacknet: Labyrinths DLC - snidelyWhiplash (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 2 people.

Bandcamp
Uplink after Uplink. Hacknet, and its Labyrinths DLC, are a truly great example of a captivating, thrilling hacking simulator. The game packs a punch, and so does its soundtrack: the tense-action-sequence music is extremely tense and action-music-y, and otherwise the music is exactly as one might expect to hear in a focused hacker’s workspace.
5. 140 - 140 Part 3B (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by aaa!

Bandcamp
When the game’s name is literally just its entire soundtrack’s BPM, you know it’s a rhythm game. And sure enough, 140 just so happens to be an excellent little rhythm platformer. It is abstract (everything is shapes and noise), minimalistic (nothing is explained), simple (left, right, jump) and hypnotic (your mind dances as much as the world does). It’s also very compact, which makes it very tempting to pick up whenever.
6. Kwirk - Heading Out (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
This song drives me insane and I love it. I only know about it because there was a huge 20v20 relay race speedrun of this game at a BSG Marathon I attended (and performed another run at — I was originally supposed to be in on this race too, but was forced to leave before the race). It’s ultra silly, but boy was it a fun experience to see a hotel conference room full of people practicing for this game on a bunch of CRT TVs sitting in a row.
7. Audiosurf - Circuit Breakdown (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 3 people.
YouTube
Remember this game? I sure do! It was all the rage when it was released back in 2008; for most music that I knew that I searched for on YouTube at the time, I would see at least one hit of the track played through Audiosurf. It just so turns out that the game has a banging main menu theme too! Great times indeed.
8. Kuro no Kiseki - Hazard Coming (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by 3 people.
YouTube
Easily one of the best games to come out last year (and hopefully one day in English), I wish I could have fit the full glory of this song into the short clip. There are lots of gems in the soundtrack from new composer Shuntaro Koguchi, including the legendary ending theme which I nearly chose instead, but 0:55 in this one is just so dang cool I couldn't help myself.
9. Track And Field II - Ending Theme (Chosen by Doctor No)
Guessed by SomeGuy712x!
YouTube
I’m a sucker for a good, 8-bit celebration theme, and the Track and Field games stand out as ones where the reward feels well-earned after the work put in to receive them. The fireworks are, admittedly, a bit much, but this is a neat little bop that captures the athletic celebration spirit.
10. Championship Rally - Title Screen (Chosen by Doctor No)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
Obscure game (never released in America), a RC Pro-Am competitor by the makers of Fire Pro Wrestling. The song picks up in tempo, but at this speed, it’s an oddly mellow and relaxing groove ahead of the racing.
11. Animal Crossing: Wild World - 2 A.M. (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by 7 people, series guessed by 7.
YouTube
Kicking off the trend of every 11th song having “cross” in its name somehow, we have this song from Animal Crossing: Wild World, which also has a remix that’s been in every SSB game since Brawl. The remix there doesn’t disappoint, and it’s so different from the original version, that it might take you a moment to even realize it’s the same song if you’ve only heard one but not the other. I know it did for me in like 2008, when I first heard the song in Brawl.
12. Battle Garegga - Fly to the Leaden Sky (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by 14 people.
YouTube
I love the bass line in this one, it takes me back to playing these sorts of top-down scrolling shooters as a kid. I also chose this one as it was a track I had been working on recently as a SMW port.
13. Shining Force III/Force of Light - The Lever to Move the World (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
I originally picked this one hoping it'd lure people to guess it as an impostor, but it turns out it might technically be an impostor after all? My research has been inconclusive; supposedly this album was created as an alternate OST for Shining Force III, and it certainly does consist of arrangements from that game, but I can't figure out if it was ever actually included within any release of the game. Luckily, nobody actually guessed it as an impostor, so I've simply counted it as Shining Force III. In any case, it's a phenomenal prog epic that deserves way more attention than it gets, with clear and strong ELP influence.
14. Gubble II - Quartz 1 (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
I’ve had Gubble music on the brain as someone asked me to look into porting some for SMW and this upbeat “clown music” track I think is one of the better ones from this kind of underrated OST and the composer Seppo Hurme is just flexing a bit in this soundtrack IMO.
15. RARAMAGI - Dies Irae (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
I am shocked and appalled that nobody even guessed a Kenji Ito game for this one, which is so obviously his work :sob: Not even a wild SaGa guess or anything... but alas. This whole soundtrack is an Ito-fest, but mostly a Keisuke Ito-fest, which is kind of fun. Lots of great tracks which are definitely worth checking out if you have access to Japanese iTunes.
16. Command & Conquer: Red Alert - Hell March (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 8 people.
YouTube
Could this be the most well-known, perhaps even the most well-regarded metal video game track of all time? Maybe before DOOM 2016 dropped, but still. I’ve never actually played Red Alert, or any other C&C game, but gosh do I love composer Frank Klepacki. Originally I wanted to choose another of his works, but seeing as it’s rather obscure and we really needed more easy picks, this absolute headbanger did just fine instead. Maybe if I’m brought on again in the future…
17. Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life - Quiet Winter (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by SomeGuy712x!
YouTube
Debatably the better of the two themes that can play on your farm in a game that admittedly doesn’t have a lot of music on the “overworld”, let alone at all. Apparently other releases of the game had a more “live audio recording” version of the soundtrack compared to the GameCube, but I went with this version since it’s not too different and, well, I grew up with it.

19. Ridge Racer Type 4 - Eat ‘Em Up (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 3 people.
YouTube
In which I successfully bait 19 people into guessing Pac-Man, get duuuuuunked on! I’ve only played Type 4 specifically very briefly and wasn’t too excited about it, but I’ve played Ridge Racer 1 and 2 on the PSP a lot (both have Eat ‘Em Up in their soundtracks too; most games in the series share a lot of music). Even if you’re not big on racing games (like me), I would still highly recommend you give it a shot, or at the very least check out the full, glorious soundtrack. It’s varied, it’s energetic, it’s very Japanese, and it’s done so well. Almost every single composer who worked on Ridge Racer music (there are a bunch) is very worth checking out.
20. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu Heroes - BGM #23 (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by nobody.

Konami credit your composers challenge. Please. Parts of this soundtrack, including much of this song, are like straight out of Ys and I NEED MORE OF IT.
21. Inscryption - The Scrybe of Magicks (Chosen by Doctor No)
Guessed by 2 people.
YouTube /
Bandcamp
More Jonah Senzel, one of my new favorite composers just because he works so *damn* well with Daniel Mullins. Any more I say about this song will get into major game spoiler mode, so I just will say that I love this setting of a “wizard’s theme,” and this is the top of my “port this” list when I get around to learning how to properly port.
22. CrossCode - Fierce Battle (Chosen by Doctor No)
Guessed by 7 people.
YouTube /
Bandcamp
What an amazing song for a turn-based RPG battle, which makes it even more amazing how well it is used in a non-turn-based RPG. The soundtrack for CrossCode absolutely nails the environment and the tone of the game as a whole, and this track specifically stands out as a beautiful framing of the world being portrayed.
23. Sonic Xtreme - E3 Trailer Theme (Chosen by Ethelfleda)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
I expected this to be a hard pick, and I was right, nobody got it right. It's the trailer theme for a game that didn't come out so it's not surprising, but also it's a banger.
24. Kirby’s Dream Land 3 - Hyper Zone 1 (Chosen by Doctor No)
Guessed by 14 people, series guessed by 6.

This may have been the most-guessed track in the contest this year, and I ain’t mad. It’s a bop!
25. Carnage Heart Portable/EXA - Jupiter II (Chosen by sincx)

Lots of variety in the guesses for this one, most of them wrong. A very cool song that definitely is not from a racing game.
26. Dicey Dungeons - Swing Me Another 6 (Chosen by Doctor No)
Guessed by 6 people.
YouTube /
Bandcamp
I am *so* glad that as many people recognized this as they did. Dicey Dungeons is a phenomenal game, but the soundtrack for it is absolutely next level. Chipzel is a sorceress with sound waves, and people who expect greatness from Terry Cavanaugh game soundtracks will not be disappointed here.
27. Oh! Samurai Girls! A - Revived Battlefield (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
Although this is a Basiscape soundtrack, I can't say I'm surprised nobody guessed it since it's probably one of the more obscure ones. Nonetheless, it's fantastic as usual, with this being one of the few Yoshimi Kudo guest contributions to a soundtrack primarily featuring Azusa Chiba.
28. Cosmic Psycho (X68000) - Begin (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by 4 people.
YouTube
Though really, I’d have to thank Ethelfleda for posting this song in the site’s Discord a while back, that’s how I discovered it! Add one to the big pile of “really banger songs from porn games for old Japanese computers”. It’s interesting that some people guessed Sonic, and specifically Knuckles’ Chaotix, because I remember the exact same thought being shared when the song was first posted.
29. [IMPOSTOR] Karl Brueggemann - Hydropolis Act 2 (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by nobody, guessed as impostor by Soul Storm.
YouTube /
Bandcamp
All the people who guessed Sonic were so close, and yet so far, which means that my devious trap was laid out perfectly. Congrats to Soul Storm for correctly guessing it as the impostor though! While not actually a remix, this song very closely follows Hydrocity Zone Act 2’s song structure, and the end result is really good. Karl Brueggemann has a bunch of albums with similar songs, aptly titled Sonicesque, and I’d really recommend checking them out, there are many bangers in there, especially if you crave more Sonic-y FM tracks.
30. Guacamelee - Caverna del Pollo (Chosen by Doctor No)
Guessed by Maniek!
YouTube /
Bandcamp
If I was pleasantly surprised by the Dicey Dungeons recognition, this is the one I felt a little surprised wasn’t more recognized in a regretful way. Guacamelee as a game has aged really well, but the soundtrack is absolutely timeless and does an amazing job of incorporating traditional Mexican sounds and themes into a cartoony, very stylized feel.
31. Tales of Asteria - The Blink of a Sword's Flash (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
It's interesting to me that the mobile Tales games have been taken on by a fresh composer, but he's done an excellent job. Of course he can't mimic the classic Sakuraba vibes, but he employs his own style extremely well, with this being just one of many, many bangers.
32. Rhyme Star - Bottom of the Ocean (Chosen by Ethelfleda)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
A really obscure PC98 game that even I don't know anything about other than the music being great. I was gonna put Cosmic Psycho here initially but Bebn got the jump on that.
33. Crossfire (Genesis) - Main Theme (Chosen by Doctor No)
Guessed by RichardDS90!
YouTube
In my mind, if you typed “Genesis SHMUP” into an AI and had it just pump one out, this is the song that would play. It hits every nostalgia note for me when I think of this genre that I associate specifically with this console.
34. Mario Tennis Aces - Losing Results (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
The obligatory mainstream Mario pick, and... nobody even attempted to guess it, which is honestly pretty impressive. I mean, it sounds more like Etrian Odyssey than Mario, but still.
35. Speedball 2 - Main Theme (Chosen by Ethelfleda)
Guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
This one sounds really damn good in stereo, the game has had a number of re-releases but I don't really know anything about it beyond that.
36. Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver - Surf (GB Sounds) (Chosen by bebn)
Series guessed by 14 people.
YouTube
Everybody fell into the trap for this one! It’s not actually from the original Gen II games, but rather the soundfont-y imitation that plays when you use the GB Sounds in the remakes. If you listen closely, there’s some very slight differences between the two. I tried to pick a song where the differences were more obvious, though you still have to listen closely for them. The most obvious difference, in my opinion, is the high lead around 4 seconds in. But even beyond that, consider song 96; would we really put two songs from the same game in one contest? (Naturally this will be bait for the next VGM guessing contest, maybe.)
37. DESIRE.EXE - Accelerating Samsara (Chosen by bebn)
Series guessed by 10 people.
YouTube
This is Yuyuko’s theme from a(n unfinished?) mod of Touhou 13 that cranks the difficulty way up. I’m surprised that 10 people correctly guessed Touhou for it, since the only thing that’s exceedingly obvious is a slight section from Charming Domination at 1:45, which wasn’t in the clip for the contest. Anyways, this is my favourite song from the mod; the instrumentation and overall energy just make it so fun to listen to.
38. Aladdin DOS/Amiga (Chosen by Ethelfleda)
Guessed by Ultima!

Really good tune from the PC versions of an old Disney game, my favorite from its ost too by a long shot.
39. Sol Cresta - Empty Sun (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by nobody.

Nobody got this one even though it's Yuzo Koshiro!! What's wrong with you people!! jk though, it's pretty new and most of the music isn't uploaded either, but it's a very solid soundtrack.
40. Diablo 1 - Town / Diablo 2 Tristram (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by 6 people.
YouTube
This is a pretty iconic piece of music from the Diablo series, the Tristram/Town theme from the first game of the series (that I admittedly forgot was in Diablo 2) and has been woven into the later games I’m sure brings back memories for many people.
41. Fez - Flow (Chosen by AmperSam)

The soundtrack by DisasterPiece for this game is superb, one of my favourites, but given a lot of the music is kinda ambient it’s a trickier one to recognize if you’re not familiar with the game.
42. Yu-Gi-Oh Dark - Duel! (Stage 2) (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by SomeGuy712x!
YouTube
I was looking to put a song in this Yu-Gi-Oh game boy game (mainly because I had it as a kid) and chose one of the catchier tracks.
43. Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth - Zinc Lablanc II ~ Time is Money (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by 5 people.
YouTube
I just finished playing this game a few weeks ago, and though it's less stellar than its breathren, it's still a solid game with a very solid soundtrack. I intentionally chose a song that would be less obvious, but I'm glad to see many people got it all the same.
44. Crossy Road Castle - Dance of the Daring (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by aaa!
Bandcamp
I originally had a different song from this game chosen, but then the 3rd soundtrack released right before the contest started so I obviously had to do the evil thing and pick something literally brand spanking new. This one also has a bit of a Kirby 64 vibe which I hoped might throw some people off.
45. The Revenge of Shinobi - The Dark City (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by 7 people.
YouTube
Not going to lie, I just wanted to put a Shinobi game in this contest as I love the soundtracks from those games.
46. Duke Nukem II - Dukin' (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by Ahrion!
YouTube
I’m a fan of a lot of the soundtrack work Bobby Prince did for Apogee and I picked this one from the side-scrolling Duke Nukem 2 to get probably one of his lesser known but not obscure works. I also really like this game, it was an excuse to introduce it to people.
47. Streets of Rogue - Homebase (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by 4 people.
YouTube
I wanted an excuse to introduce people to this game’s soundtrack. I think it taps into the feel of the Streets of Rage games but is a bit more environmental which lends itself better to a rogue-like game–reminds me of Necrodancer’s OST a bit as well.
48. Super Solvers: Midnight Rescue - Intro (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
The Super Solvers series were a series of educational games for DOS, this pick was to tap right into the memories of those who had played those back when they were kids. The intro to this one in particular uses a very simplistic rendition of the classical piece “The Sorcerer's Apprentice” which a number of people guessed (incorrectly) as Fantasia.
49. The Chaos Engine (Amiga) - Intro (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by 4 people.
YouTube
I’m a sucker for a lot of the composing done on the Amiga and the intro music for the Chaos Engine is pretty banging.
50. WarioWare: Smooth Moves - Wii Dancing (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by 8 people.
YouTube
I will never forgive Nintendo for replacing this song with a different, worse song from Twisted for WarioWare Gold. Very aptly composed for a microgame where you have to follow along colourful Wario-faced humanoid shapes in an elaborate dance number, this song is so fun to dance too. Despite the stress of potentially screwing up the game due to Wii Remote controls being a bit odd sometimes, the music just puts you in the zone as you’re playing.
51. Eye of the Beholder - 04 (Chosen by Ethelfleda)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
I am very surprised nobody guessed a Yuzo Koshiro track. It's very Streets of Rage-esque which is what I expected people to guess it as, but not even that.
52. London Detective Mysteria - Rosetta Stone of the Storm (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
I have yet to play this game, but I've heard it is quite good. What I know for sure is good, though, is the soundtrack, and this song stands out as truly wonderful among them, with a ton of raw emotion and power.
53. Chook & Sosig: Walk the Plank - The Cheeky Unicorn (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by Maniek!

Bandcamp
I could see why people would guess Spongebob! The slide guitar certainly gives off that vibe. To be fair, so do Chook & Sosig themselves, being a sensible ghost chicken and a spaghetti cat respectively. The game is puzzling, mysterious, absolutely hilarious, silly to the max, and extremely wholesome.
Geez I sound like I’m trying to sell something aren’t I? Anyway I tried to reach out to you regarding your car’s extended warranty; if you could call me back that’d be great.
54. SEUM: Speedrunners From Hell - Escape from SEUM (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 2 people.

You’re a beer-loving metalhead. One day, Satan himself waltzes in on you and steals your beer. You have none of that, so you cut off his hand, giving you magical powers, with which you speedrun through hell to get back your beer and wreak your vengeance.
I love how entirely no-bullshit yet unserious this game is. The music follows suit: proper, straight headbangers, all thrills and no frills. Horns up!
55. Fire Emblem: Three Houses - Paths That Will Never Cross (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by 3 people, series guessed by 1.
YouTube
Honestly one of the more memorable battle themes from the game for me, despite being shorter than most if not all of the actual chapter themes given its conditional nature. I’m glad to see that at least a few got this one, given what happened with last tourney’s lone Fire Emblem song, but I guess that’s to be expected as this is a more recent and popular release.
56. Raiden IV: Overkill - Metal Storm (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 4 people, series guessed by 1.
YouTube
When I was babby I played Raiden X, a Flash remake of Raiden II, so much. It features Metal Storm too, though in a much more simplified arrangement. This is pure shmup action; as one might expect, the soundtrack is totally killer!
57. Otomedius Gorgeous! - Take Care (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 6 people, series guessed by 4.
YouTube
Speaking of Flash games. Never played any of the Gradius games, but! I have played the absolutely ancient Flash game Mario Remix, which just so happens to feature a Gradius section which features an epic MIDI arrangement of Take Care, a theme which has featured in a lot of the Gradius series in many different arrangements; frankly I prefer Mario Remix’s over most of the official ones, but Otomedius Gorgeous! sure does pack a punch. Typical Japanese-style sensory overload, but manageable enough to not cover up its awesome details.
58. Myst III: Exile - Opening Titles (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 3 people, series guessed by 1.
YouTube
If you know me, you’ll know that Myst is the best game series ever and I’ll die on this hill. This entry into the series specifically might be the first game that I’ve ever played. Even today, it’s still a breathtaking game in every way I can think of: the pre-rendered 3D visuals are stunning, the orchestral soundtrack by Jack Wall is breathtaking (likewise his soundtrack for Myst IV), the story is captivating and immersive, and the real-life acting (it prominently features the amazing Brad Dourif; no CGI on him either) is absolutely spectacular.
Side-note: I chose Opening Titles as it was a better fit to make a snippet out of, but I do so recommend listening to the full Main Theme. It is scarily emotive, especially considering that the language sung by the choir is fictional.

60. Hexcells - Track 4 (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by nobody.

I am well addicted to Hexcells Infinite (same soundtrack), on account of its random puzzle generator. The soundtrack is pure, ambient bliss, with accents controlled by player input. I love peaceful, minimalistic puzzle games, but if you ask me, the Hexcells series, and really anything that developer Matthew Brown makes, takes the cake.
I’d like my cake back.
61. Metro.Siberia: Underground - The.Gysi.Express (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by aaa!

You know what? I’m positively surprised anyone’s guessed this one! Kudos to you. We used to play this Flash game a lot when I was in primary school. I was the best in class, yay. More importantly, the music is ridiculously good, even if it’s just four short loops. That is to say, I love everything Simon Stålenhag (composer) touches and I will take every chance I get to spread the gospel. Go check him out, he makes the best sci-fi music, sci-fi art and sci-fi novels (that have D&D game and Amazon Prime show adaptations).

Ready! Set! GO!
The game that got me into gaming. I, like many, know this game because it came pre-installed on my dad’s old iMac. Had the time of my life playing it. Actually, y’know what, I recently watched a video essay on this game and its successors that was so unbelievably well-made, hilarious and conveyed everything I wanted it to and more, that I’m just gonna link it here and wholeheartedly recommend you give it a spin because it’s the best shit!
63. THOTH - Underkop (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by aaa!
YouTube /
Bandcamp
Most games have static music that plays as if separate from the game. Other games, such as 140 from way up in this list (made by the same developer as THOTH), have the gameplay directly dictated by the music. THOTH is entirely like 140, except that the music is directly dictated by the gameplay. Oh, and it’s a twin-stick shooter. And it’s even more abstract, the music inclus. It’s an overwhelmingly immersive experience, and I can’t recommend it enough.
64. Quake II - Descent Into Cerberon (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 3 people.

Fun-fact: the Wii has a homebrew port of Quake II, which can do multiplayer with PC players. If at any time, any player shoots the BFG10k, the Wii crashes! (Or at least, mine used to when I played it a bunch of years ago.)
65. Element4l - Close Your Eyes So You Can See (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 3 people.

Bandcamp
It’s a shame I couldn’t fit more of this track into the snippet, as it’s such a gem that deserves a full listen. In fact, how about this: for how utterly disappointing the game is, it has, without exaggeration, one of the best soundtracks I know, across all media. Its production is flawless and immensely detailed, its compositions rich and emotive, its palette fresh and airy, and its movements ever surprising and uplifting, while remaining rooted in the kind of mute narrative that one would expect from video game music.
It’s a soundtrack worth crying to, especially with that closer track. And that, while not being trope-y in the slightest.
66. Thunder Cross - First Attack (Chosen by AmperSam)

I had to get more 80s side-scrolling shoot em up music on here, but I think more than many games in this genre Thunder Cross really got the energy of shmups right with its soundtrack right away.

Well, it would seem I’ve been schooled on this track, as it turns out it’s not technically from the game? Apparently this among a few other tracks in the game’s OST were written separately by Hiroto Saitoh for an album of music to be used for games, which is cool, but also went over my head completely, given that Saitoh also composed the rest of the game’s soundtrack. (fact check that?)

I did intentionally choose one of the more ambient songs from this game, though anyone who's played it would probably pick up on it. Possibly the best visual novel ever created, which will make it hard to top with the sequel this summer, but I eagerly await it to find out.
74. Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex - Weathering Heights (Chosen by Ethelfleda)

I was expecting more people to get this one. I'm the only person who doesn't absolutely loathe this game but I don't think anyone can deny how good the music is, it was hard to choose which one to enter into the contest.
75. Club Penguin - Pizza Parlor (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by 2 people.

Hopefully this awakened lost memories in people. I think I was hesitating between this or one of the arcade games’ songs, but I feel like this one is much more unique. It feels like some sort of background music you could really hear anywhere, but combined with the familiarity if you’ve played Club Penguin, I feel like it triggers some inexplicable feeling of nostalgia.

Did I pick this on its own merit? Yes, I did! But did I also pick it because it was written by SMWCentral’s own com_poser, who did all the music for Cris Tales? Yes, I did!
77. Picross S6 - BGM 3 (Chosen by Doctor No)

I gotta be honest, it took effort at the beginning of this year’s planning process to not just do 100 picross songs and call it a day. It’s been that kind of year, and someone would’ve gotten some of them if we’d done that. Maybe not this one, but some of them.
78. Mario Artist Polygon Studio - Game Station (Chosen by Ethelfleda)

Hell music, it's so out of place in its ost and in Mario in general. Not surprised nobody got this one either.

Space Harrier theme itself is iconic, and this is the best version of that theme imo.

I love this game, a lot. It's my favorite on the pc engine even. Like castlevania 3 but with more cute girls. The music, like that game, is also top notch.
81. El Shaddai - Heaven and Earth in Resonance (Chosen by sincx)

Another game I know almost nothing about except for the wonderful soundtrack, which is chock full of beautifully dark themes like this one. Definitely a game I'm keeping on my radar, especially with it recently getting a PC port.

I had to rep another 90s MS-DOS Apogee-made game, this one is basically their clone of Mario Kart but the soundtrack is pretty dope.
83. Shinma Touki Den ~ Magus in Mystic Geometries - AN ORDEAL FROM GOD (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by 5 people, series guessed by 9.
YouTube
This song feels very Touhou 10-like, so it’s easy to get the series right, but it’s much harder to know what game it’s from unless you’re really familiar with it, since it’s from a fangame, despite being composed by ZUN. I feel like that combination there is enough to throw people off. The part around 0:30 was stuck in my head for a good while after the start of the contest.
(While this is in Touhou Unreal Mahjong also, it’s a direct copy, so that only counts as a series guess.)
84. Goemon's Great Adventure - Don't be Hit by the Bones (Chosen by AmperSam)

The Mystical Ninja series has many games but few were released in North America, this music pick was from Goemon's Great Adventure on the N64 mostly because I wanted a stumper.
85. Bomberman 64 - Sirius Theme 2 (Chosen by AmperSam)

This boss battle theme is pretty great, it’s got a bit of melancholy about it to my ears which we don’t often get for fight music.
86. Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 4/5/6 - Sorrow (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
This song sounds so familiar and nostalgic to me even though I've never touched a Yu-Gi-Oh game of any kind. I have to wonder if it's just very similar to another song, or if it's just so well written that it implies nostalgia where there is none. Worth noting that the rest of these soundtracks are great too; it's wild to me that so many Yu-Gi-Oh branded cashgrabs have such consistently good music.

While not that big of a trap, it’s still one nonetheless, as a lot of people ended up guessing Tower of Heaven, which is indeed where the original song is from (which you no doubt know, especially if you hang around SMWC due to a couple of iconic ports), but not this specific remix. I played a lot of Rivals of Aether with some friends a couple of months back, and finding out that there was remixed Tower of Heaven music in there made me so happy. Of course, it took me weeks to find it because we had so many goddamn mods. At least 3 of them were McDonald’s stages.
90. Vivid Knight - Hidden Treasure Room (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by Maniek!

This was my favorite soundtrack of 2021 - an absolute masterwork by two masters of their craft. The whole soundtrack is both beautiful and intense while maintaining a wonderful folk-inspired charm. Strongly, strongly recommended; you can buy it on Steam very cheaply to support the creators, which they absolutely deserve.
91. Cat Bird - Grasi Theme (Chosen by Exodust)

Easily the best mobile game I’ve ever played. Not just because it’s fun, endearing and beautiful, but because it’s well-made, thoughtful, and, unlike basically every mobile game ever, not like a mobile game. As in, no bullshit. The soundtrack fits in perfectly with that, and just so happens to be made by a composer, Julien Mier, whose wholesome and deeply-intricate music I already loved before this game came out. Instant win.
92. Vib-Ribbon - Vib-Ribbon Blues (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 12 people.

12 people?! Seriously, why am I surprised? It’s cute, it’s doin’ all the groovin’, it’s somewhat obscure, it’s Japan-exclusive, it’s a rhythm game, yeah it’s Vib-Ribbon baby!
Also sorry, “what the fuck” is incorrect, but thanks for trying!
93. Pokémon Platinum - Battle! Frontier Brain (Chosen by Exodust)

So many guesses for Diamond/Pearl that I just couldn’t count… so sorry! Even my easier picks have a tricky element to them, it seems. Still though, happy hardcore, in my Pokémon game? More likely than you’d think!
94. Sonic Rush Adventure - Boss: Deep Core (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by 7 people, series guessed by 3.

Rave stabs, Amen break, fat bass, intense drum fills, high tempo; what’s not to love? The Sonic Rush series is quite underrated in my opinion, not the least bit because of how banging its soundtracks are.
95. Brickochet - bgm_rm.ogg (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
Brickochet is a block-breaker game that I found on Steam on a whim. It’s pretty fun, and also has a really good soundtrack. Sadly they’re bundled with the game as .ogg files rather than .mid files, but they’re still really good songs at least.
96. Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal - Game Boy Printer (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by 7 people.
YouTube
It’s not heard very often in the game boy Pokemon games but if you know this one you know this one. It’s what you heard if you ever tried to print something without a printer, and for error music this was a cute little tune. They did put it in the remakes years later but I have a soft spot for this low-fi version.
97. Battletoads - Pause Beat (Chosen by AmperSam)

I put this one in as a gimme. The pause music from NES battletoads is pretty iconic and captures a “waiting to get back to the action” mood well. It is also etched into my memory for eternity.

100. [IMPOSTOR] Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem (anime) - Fire Emblem ~Mystery of the Emblem~ (Chosen by icrawfish)
Series guessed by 5 people.
YouTube
Yeeeaahh, this was kind of a hard bait for the ones that recognized it. For context, Fire Emblem had an anime OVA back in 1996, which aired for 2 episodes and somehow got a (comically questionable) english dub, and naturally it uses Fire Emblem’s theme as part of the soundtrack. Funnily enough this was the first appearance of Fire Emblem in the West, well before Smash Bros. Melee brought Marth and Roy over.
In summation, no, it’s not from Shadow Dragon. Sorry.
101. Wizards & Warriors - Title Theme (Chosen by AmperSam)

This is just more David Wise doing David Wise things and this NES game is a deeper cut on his work.
102. Adventures of Mana - Mana Palace (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
This particular soundtrack is a near-faithful remaster of the original tunes from the first mana game, Final Fantasy Adventure, with some musical additions in certain songs from its first remake, Sword of Mana. Most of the tunes go through the original song twice per loop, with the second loop expanding on the theme chord-wise, and this one is no different. Really an OST I think is overlooked despite being better in many ways than Sword of Mana’s, although based on what I’ve heard from others that may not be the case with the actual game. Curious, isn’t it?
103. Insaniquarium! Deluxe - Tank 1 (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by 2 people.

Only real ones remember this one. (actually I didn’t immediately remember it until looking up the OST but it was part of my childhood so it’s still valid.)
104. Triangle Strategy - Arise, Warriors (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by 3 people.
YouTube
I still haven’t played the whole demo for the game yet, and at this point I probably shouldn’t, since the full game’s out now. I remember seeing that Yasunori Nishiki wouldn’t be returning from Octopath to compose this game’s soundtrack, but when I realized the composer, Akira Senju, did one of my favorite soundtracks ever (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood) I couldn’t help but be excited in a whole new way. But, this song among all others (besides the title screen theme) definitely stood out to me the most whilst playing what little I had, and makes me excited to experience more of the soundtrack from this new release.
105. Harvest Moon: Animal Parade - Goddess Spring (Night) (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by Maniek!
YouTube
Of all the songs that I distinctly recall from this game after years of playing and watching other siblings play it, this was not one of the songs I immediately remembered by a long shot, relative to the other more iconic themes. But, when I was going back over the soundtrack recently, this one really hit home for me with how peaceful and dreamy it was, really encapsulating a core part of the spirit of the game. (Shoutouts to the one person who guessed Harvest Moon for one of my previous picks but neither of the Harvest Moon ones; you missed, but your efforts will not be forgotten.)
106. Wii Fit - Training Menu (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by 3 people, series guessed by 1.

I’m honestly surprised not more people got this one, since it was what I considered to be my easiest pick. Guess people don’t use their Wii’s to exercise much anymore…
107. Octopath Traveler - A Sea Breeze Blows (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by 4 people.
YouTube
Already mentioned my love for Yasunori Nishiki’s work on this game in my Triangle Strategy breakdown, but I figured this would be a good pick that people who had at least either played the game through chapter one or who surfed the OST beyond the popular songs would recognize. Plus it’s just a nice tune (not that that’s hard to find in Octopath).
108. Kururin Squash! - World B1 (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
This one’s a bit of an oddball, since I only discovered it thanks to me searching the series’ soundtracks after enjoying Kururin Paradise’s OST (thanks be to brickblock369 and other lovely folks who brought songs from that game into our music section). Hopefully the music cut out just as it was getting good for you, so as to compel you to listen to more of it. (insert gooey emoji here)
109. Unlimited Saga - DG Listless (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
I definitely underestimated this OST at first. This was in part due to having only become interested in the franchise thanks to Kenji Ito’s compositions for the games, and upon seeing that he didn’t compose the soundtrack for this I lost interest fast. But, there’s some good and honest tracks in here, and while this isn’t a particularly common angle to take I think it summarized well how things that we might underestimate can be surprisingly good (I didn’t care about this song much on a first listen until I got a decent bit in, and then I began to appreciate it more).
110. Tales of Phantasia: Take up the Cross (Chosen by Ethelfleda)
Guessed by 9 people.
YouTube
This is a weird one in that the game is kind of obscure but not the song. It only got 1 western release via a horrid gba demake, but the song has been featured in many other tales games and is pretty iconic on its own. Also just my favorite jrpg ever.
111. [COMPOSTOR] Equinox Looms (“Chosen” by Exodust)
Guessed by nobody.

Gotcha! Didn’t see that one coming, huh? Unfortunately, this snippet is all I have of this track of mine; I was never able to finish it. Maybe one day… or I’ll find a use for it in its current shape. Who knows.
112. Touhou Tenkarou ~ Frantically Forbidden Fruit - Humans and Youkai Traversing the Canal (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by SomeGuy712x, series guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
I originally picked this one for song #111 to keep the “cross” trend going because I misremembered the title being translated as “Humans and Youkai Crossing the Canal”, but well, it isn’t, so I moved it down one. I thought it’d be funny to keep, because the intro of the song doesn’t sound too similar to the original song from Touhou 14 unless you specifically know it’s a remix of that song. Anyways, this game has really good original songs as well, with my favourites being Misty Flight, the stage 1 theme, and Dragon God Flying Above Mount Hourai ~ Oriental Mythology, the stage 4 theme. Go listen to those ones instead.
113. Ty the Tazmanian Tiger 2: Bush Rescue (GBA) - Bush Rescue HQ (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by KungFuFurby, series guessed by aaa.
YouTube
This has to be one of the crunchiest, crustiest GBA ost’s I’ve encountered to date, and I debated using this theme for the contest just due to how scratchy the starting instruments are, but after going over it again and listening past the GameBoy crust, the tune gets honestly pretty good, and I couldn’t think of something better to sum up my childhood experience with the game.
114. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - Day (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by 3 people.
YouTube
This I also didn’t realize appeared in multiple games, but it’s one of those songs that screams “budget John Williams” but still works very well for the setting. I can still get a vivid picture in my head of the game’s outdoor courtyard when I hear the starting notes come in. (in case you haven’t noticed already a lot of my picks are riding off of childhood nostalgia. Sue me.)
115. Kirby’s Dream Course - Jigsaw Plains (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by 13 people, series guessed by 2.
YouTube
I picked this song thinking it was some obscure unused song from Kirby no Omocha Hako - Baseball, not realizing it’s actually from Kirby’s Dream Course lol. Either way, it’s a very cute song, and it reminds me of Float Islands a bit.
116. I Am Setsuna - Endless Crusade (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by 4 people.
YouTube
I think the first thing that I was introduced to this game with was the fact that almost all of the OST was going exclusively piano, which in concept sounds a bit restrictive, but when executed with the snowy and death-lingering setting makes for the perfect selection. Unfortunately I never got to beat the game, but I remember having good experiences all around with the atmosphere. (Not with the grinding, though. The grinding was not fun.)
117. 3D Space Cadet Pinball - Main theme (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by 11 people.

This one is for the people who killed any time at all in class playing the only few games on the computer and pinball was way cooler than freecell.
118. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia - One Star By The Next (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by SomeGuy712x!
YouTube
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite games, I couldn’t help but include this one. It fits its applied setting of a mystical hamlet hidden away in the illusory woods perfectly, along with syncing with the emotional tone of the story at that point in the game very well. An uncertain quest, a bittersweet reunion, a cold and painful journey ahead, yet silence for a moment to reflect on what was and what is to come. Or, er, something like that, I suppose.
119. Nintendo DSi - Shop Theme (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by 11 people, series guessed by 6.
YouTube
That’s right, it’s the Wii Shop Channel’s lesser-known cousin that hosted such great classics as Pictobits and Mario Clock. Sadly, I think the DSi shop got shut down even before the Wii Shop Channel. There was some hope, in that pretty much all the DSiWare was available on the 3DS eShop, but well, that’s shutting down too. Rest in peace WarioWare: Snapped!, Nintendo Countdown Calendar, Mario Calculator, and Flipnote Studio.
120. Ultimate Brain Games (GBA) - Twilight (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
This… I’m not even really sure how to describe this soundtrack, honestly. It’s like an electronic boy band from the early 2000’s had to make game music and recycled their intro chord progressions to spin new instrumental melodies over them and it just works perfectly, or something like that (idk I didn’t look into the composer(s) at all it’s not exactly a renowned game). Definitely the theme of getting properly whooped in a game of checkers by a horrendous-looking pixel-faced AI, that much I can say for certain.
121. Motocross Maniacs - Gameplay Theme A (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by 3 people.

Dug this one up for our “cross” theme, I chose it for its mega man vibes as I thought it would throw people off.
EXTREME SONGS
E1. Archer Maclean’s Mercury - Dark Star (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
An obscure little physics puzzle game for the PSP. Quirky game, with an as quirky (and extensive) soundtrack from a very quirky composer. I don’t like all tracks on the soundtrack as much, but gosh, there are some big gems. It’s mostly got a lot of wonky techno going on, some acid, some decidedly abstract cuts, but then there’s also sudden atmospheric jungle bangers. Naturally, I went for straight wonky techno, because extreme
E2. Cosmic Osmo’s Hex Isle - Plasma Miasma (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
I didn’t really expect anyone to guess this one. Its game is almost at the point of being abandonware. Pretty much impossible to find legally, and impossible to get illegally. And even if you do get your hands on it, good luck getting it to run smoothly. The only reason I know this game and its music, is because it’s a game by Cyan Worlds, who made the Myst series. Friends of mine in the Myst speedrunning community have been running this game, somehow without (too much) performance issues. Turns out it has this massive bop in it.
E3. Farland Story FX - Attack Theme 2 (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by Fullcannon!
YouTube
There isn't much noteworthy about this game except for the two attack themes which are both incredibly proggy and way too short. More please!
E4. That’s So Raven Pinball - Main Theme (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
I had to record this myself from Flashpoint Infinity. This song plays like constantly in-game, while bitcrushed voice clips of That’s So Raven characters cheer you on for being good at dinky Flash pinball. One time, my friends and I managed to break the game and make our score endlessly increase after beating a bonus stage or something like that. Ah, to be a That’s So Raven pinball millionaire.
E5. Dragon Knight VI (PC-FX) - Title Screen (Chosen by sincx)
Guessed by Ultima!
YouTube
I was tempted not to award full points for not specifying the game version, but luckily I was feeling generous. This has the classic PCE/PCFX arrangement style and it is, naturally, very good.
E6. SOMA - Underwater Chase (unused) (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
Easily the best horror game I’ve ever seen. Visually stunning, gameplay thrilling to no end, and the story... very, very good; in my opinion the story alone makes it a must-play or must-watch for those who can handle it. I’d give a synopsis, but I don’t trust myself to do so without saying too much; just, have a look?
Now, the game comes with a file called “_supersecret.rar” in its install directory. The password to this archive is deviously hidden in fragments throughout the game. Inside are a lot of goodies, peeks into the game’s development process. Among which, unused music! This track isn’t a particularly good example of the game’s actual soundtrack, as the soundtrack is deeply atmospheric and atonal. Still, it absolutely slams.
E7. SNES Station PS2 - Menu (Chosen by Ethelfleda)
Guessed by aaa!
YouTube
Possibly my most obscure pick. I'm not surprised nobody knew a song from the menu screen of a several decade old snes emulator only accessible through ps2 homebrew. It's super good though.
E8. Wolfenstein 3D (SNES) - Unused Victory Theme (Chosen by AmperSam)
Guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
This one was a deep cut, the Wolfenstein 3D port to the SNES had also recomposed the victory theme from the original but it was never used. Kudos to the people who recognized this one.
E9. MARDEK - Earth Temple (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
Part of me had a slim hope that someone would recognize this song, but another part of me is glad that it lasted the test of resilient obscurity. This flash game was something my brother and I played on a flash game website way back in 2010 or something, and it wasn’t until many years later that I rediscovered the game with an additional 3rd chapter on a different site, where I eventually ran into this theme. While it’s no compositional masterpiece and clearly has the essence of flash midi instruments, there’s charm there that brings out the nostalgia in my heart.
E10. Soundvoyager - Sound Catcher (Voyage) (Chosen by Exodust)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
I thought this to be a somewhat easier extreme pick, especially after seeing so many correct guesses for my Vib-Ribbon tune, but oh well. Soundvoyager is a really cool Japan-exclusive Gameboy Advance game with a unique mechanic: you navigate entirely through sound! You can play the entire game without ever looking at your screen. It also has really cool music. I highly recommend trying it out!
E11. Sno-Cross Championship Racing - Race Music 8 (Chosen by sincx)

Hell yes to super obscure PS1 racing games with banger soundtracks. Especially ones featuring Yamaha® snowmobiles.
