# Non-Fool April VGM Guessing Contest Results!

It's been quite a while, eh? One big giant pile of data later, it's finally time to treat your ears and see what lies beyond the 30-second mark. Let's dive in!

A very huge and special thanks to Exodust for cleaning up all the formatting for this part, making it all consistent, and adding all the links.

And now, to put the "contest" in "VGM guessing contest", here are the results.

In 3rd place, we have:
Maniek, with 84 points!

Coming in 2nd is:
aaa, with 111 points!

And in 1st place:
SomeGuy712x, with 131 points!

Here are the full results, prefaced by the relevant notation:

x - full guess (2 points)
x^ - series guess (1 point)
x** - full guess plus being the only one to get it (2 + 2 = 4 points)
+I - identified a song as the impostor / compostor (+1 point in addition to a possible 2 points if you identified the song itself correctly, otherwise just 1 point)
+C - identified the compostor (3 points)
E - Extreme song (4 points)

If you spot any mistakes, please let us know! As you can no doubt see, there was a lot of data to sift through, and though we've quadruple-checked, we're only human.

Thank you for participating, and hopefully you'll have a blast listening to the full songs! See you next time!

(Trophies for the top 3 participants will be handed out by tomorrow-ish.)
I caught an error in the standings: 70 is marked as a double star for SomeGuy712x... whereas it's also marked for me and Dippy with no stars.

Some commentary on the ones I guessed (correct or not)...
006 - Oh man, you fooled me with using a GB song that I guessed a NES/FC game for! Ah rats.
019 - Yup, you got me too, as I was one of the Pac-Man guessers. At least I know why: it's Namco, who tends to refer to their own games.
024 - Ah well, had the right idea, but the wrong game. There were only two games that I could think of that had that kind of soundset.
029 - Well done! Yeah, I thought this was also Sonic.
035 - No wonder why this sounded so familiar: I most likely accidentally ran into this listening to a playthrough. And I didn't guess this as an Amiga game either.
036 - Heh! I thought it was an imposter! And I didn't even guess Pokémon! ...not to mention I made a second NES/GB mistake, as I misidentified this on the NES side.
037 - OK. This was a wild guess of mine that accidentally nailed a series guess.
048 - That's very interesting. And I realized my mistake because Fantasia was never released on the DOS: at least I had the right idea platform-wise, except it also wasn't from a Disney DOS game.
053 - More obscure than I expected it to be. I thought it sounded Spongebob-esque.
085 - Admittedly, I never got this far, but I do have an actual Bomberman 64 cartridge, which actually helped me at least guess the game.
099 - You sneak! Well done, very well done. I thought this sounded very Mario-esque... and based off of the info for this game, it explains why.
106 - I have Wii Fit Plus and Wii Fit U. I remembered the theme from I think Wii Fit Plus initially.
113 - I only knew of the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2 GBA game because of a TAS I had ran into once.
119 - Well... that explains my series guess. I thought it was a remix of the Wii Shop theme, but I didn't realize it was officially used.
I'm surprised that bebn was surprised that so many people guessed #37's series correctly. Touhou music has a super-distinctive style that I love how many fan composers are able to imitate flawlessly.

I'm also a bit surprised that I'm the only one to guess #74 - I thought I would hold that status for #83. I don't totally hate The Wrath of Cortex either due to nostalgia (I watched my brother play it when we were kids, because my brother was a huge video game hog back then). I keep thinking that game would be more well-known due to the fact that it could be considered another Crash 4.

#79 and #112 sounded super tip-of-the-tongue for me. I knew I heard #79 somewhere before, but I couldn't remember where to save my life, so I just gave up and guessed Dynamite Headdy. I knew #112 was a Touhou song of some sort, and I also thought it sounded somewhat familiar (I think I also thought this one sounded like the DDC stage 2 theme), but I didn't count on fangames remixing official songs in an official style. I happened to guess this one as a composter, after a bit of doubt that two contests in a row would have a Touhou-styled composter, but I gave up on this one too and just did the composter guess. Yes, that means I was one off from the real composter! Go me!

I also like how this contest seems to have more FM-synth songs than usual - I have an appreciation for that kind of music due to classic Sonic and also classic Touhou. I need to keep Rhyme Star in mind, because I get a bit excited whenever I learn about a PC-98 game that isn't a visual novel or porn.

Also, congratulations to SomeGuy712x for winning!
Kinda in hibernation for a while. I hope to be back in full swing soon.
complely forgot to review my submissions before deadline and ended up giving up; so I will list the 20 songs I seriously had worked on.

And for all the others I was frustrated because I had no freakine idea, man, bro, bruh, pal, fam, chum, bro, bruh, fam, boi, bro, chum, fam, kiddo, chum, bro. In hindsight, it is good that I didn't force myself to take a wild series guess for all songs, because I just don't know any of the names that showed up, no regerts.

Guess I can participate next time... Or just sit around and listen to the results to build VGM some memory once in my life. Because some of the songs definitely are worth my attention. Problem being I don't play vidya all that much.

Oh! I also wanted to add that I've played some SOMA, mind-blowing game, didn't even know there were hidden tracks ahah.

That said, congratulations to our winners and thanks for organizing this contest.
Heh, it's kinda funny seeing how distant the scores for the 1st-3rd place were and seeing how close everything else was by comparison lmao; definitely makes me pretty proud to get 4th place for sure haha

Anyway, here's a couple of thoughts on some tracks I found appealing/cool or were things I had an idea of what it was but it wasn't concrete enough in my head to guess it straight up:

Layout by Mathos
Wow, all that effort I went through searching for songs paid off! Of course, there are some that I feel like I should've gotten, or could've put more effort into finding.

(Also, thanks for not embedding all 132 videos into this thread, which would've likely made my computer lag like crazy. I much prefer just having standard links like what was done here.)

010 - Man, I knew this one sounded like an NES game, and I did search a bunch of them, but didn't search enough, apparently.
013 - Ooh, so I do get full credit for my Shining Force III guess here. Nice. Yeah, after I heard it while searching the Shining Force III soundtrack, and that it sounded like the same melody, but not quite the same instruments, I spent forever searching all other Shining Force game soundtracks, and couldn't find any completely exact match, so I left Shining Force III as my guess, expecting to only get credit for the series guess at best.
019 - Heh, you almost could've baited me, but when I couldn't find an exact match for any direct Pac-Man game, I started thinking about other Namco games that might use that theme, and found it!
028 - Funnily enough, one of the things I searched for on YouTube was obscure video game music, and one of the playlists had this exact song as the very first video in it!
029 - D'oh! I knew this sounded almost like a Wacky Workbench track, but it wasn't quite right. I thought about making this one of my impostor guesses, but I had already used all those guesses elsewhere.
030 - Well, now that raocow is playing Guacamelee! 2, I recognize the vibe in this song, but Guacamelee! was not on my mind at all during the contest duration.
033 - I knew that one sounded Genesis, but couldn't figure it out. Oh, well.
036 - Wow, really. You're such a sneak. Also, song #96 is originally from Pokémon Yellow, not GSC (though it does play in GSC too), so I didn't consider it as being from the same game as this one anyway.
037 - Yeah, I just left that one as a Touhou series guess when I couldn't find an exact match when searching the main Touhou games, since I figured it was probably from a Touhou fangame or something.
042 - Heh, I'm guessing none of the other guessers had played Dark Duel Stories a lot back then. Also, I feel I should mention that this song was a tad loud compared to most of the others.
048 - I put so much effort into trying to figure out this one. When I couldn't find an exact match for Sorcerer's Apprentice, I did think that maybe it went to some old mystery/sleuthing game or something, but I ended up making this my Composter guess instead. Welp. (I might've even actually played this game at some point back in elementary school.)
052 - I thought this was a Kirby boss theme or something, but nope.
053 - Super Mario Sunshine was all I could think of regarding this song.
057 - I love this remix of "Take Care" too! I recognized it as being that Gradius track, so then I searched for all games that used that particular track, and found it!
066 - Another Genesis-sounding one that I just couldn't figure out.
069 - Huh? You said I guessed this one, but I don't see "69" among the numbers shown after my name in the full results. Anyway, I had guessed this one as an imposter, called "LILT-0018 - Fragments of the World", and here's where I found it, in case this helps with the "fact check":
http://www.vgmonline.net/fragments/
070 - Huh, I don't think I should have the ** after the "70" in my numbers, if this one was guessed by 3 people.
079 - If you're gonna have boot screen music, this one's hard to beat!
083 - Did my Touhou Unreal Mahjong guess count as full credit? I don't see the ^ after the "83" in my numbers. Also, this song is kinda loud too.
089 - My ears were very pleased with this version of Luna Ascension. I made sure to figure out exactly which game this was used in.
093 - D'oh, I searched a bunch of Pokémon battle themes, but somehow missed this exact one. At least I got the series guess point.
096 - This one actually originates from Pokémon Yellow, which also has Printer compatibility, and uses this same song. At least I was correctly given full credit for my Pokémon Yellow guess.
099 - Man, my mind was so sure this sounded like a song found in a modern Pokémon game's clothing shop or something.
100 - That counts as an impostor even though it's used in Shadow Dragon? Hmm... This might be a similar situation to song 69 then.
110 - At least I only paid about 8 bucks at Target for that "horrid GBA remake" that I still enjoyed, while other places were still selling it for \$30.
111 - I had already wasted my composter guess on 48, but I probably wouldn't have figured this one out anyway.
117 - Welp, I guess I didn't play 3D Space Cadet Pinball enough back in the day.
121 - Nah, that didn't throw me towards Mega Man, but part of the song did give me Gradius vibes, so I checked the Game Boy Gradius/Nemesis games, and when that didn't work, I searched for any Konami Game Boy games, eventually finding it!
And, I couldn't figure out any of the Extreme songs this time. Not even close. Oh, well.
I forgot to post my guesses in time, so when I was gonna to send them, it was too late, lol. I knew the Wario : Smooth Moves one and Goemon's Great Adventure ones. Fun fact: the Gashadokuro (giant skeleton youkai) music ("Don't be Hit by the bones") was later reused as normal boss battle theme in Ganbare Goemon: Oedo Daikaten.
Well I had a blast! Happy to see others did too. Congrations to the winners, sorry not sorry to the rest! I, uh, didn't exactly hold my punches and I love it

My picks were exclusively for games I've had prior experience with; I looked nothing up specifically for this contest. As a result... good times.

Yeah! The `_supersecret.rar` archive contains a bunch of cool stuff, including a hilariously-DIY video of how they recorded some foley! Truly a work of art, well worth checking out.

Gottem!
The funniest part is that I actually really enjoyed going through that visual novel ahahahaha. I don't care about anime in and of itself, but if the content seems appealing to me, you know...

You know.

61: Ah, I was definitely thinking this was some kind of 80s/90s arcade game with a FM synth soundtrack, since it sounded way too much like something like that, but I did not guess it was actually a flash game, like what; this sounds extremely good for a flash game too, god damn, kind of wished I ran by this while going through flash games at the computer room at school, since I liked doing that a lot while either avoiding schoolwork or when I already finished it and there was still some time left before I came back to class, ahh, those were some good times haha

I know right? Simon mostly does a lot of ambient, but he also did stuff like that. In similar vein to #61, I'm sure you'll love this track of his.

119: Wait, I guessed this one right, so why didn't I get points for it??? Kinda weird, but okay I guess

I've brought it up with the rest, and bebn said he'll do a double-check when he's able!

You're quite welcome hahaha. In the end, the rationale was easy: rather spend a little extra time opening individual links than spending a lotta extra time waiting for your browser to stop suffering (especially on mobile).

Nice job! I knew I was gonna enjoy the results with this track when I picked it; I'm glad it gave a fun challenge!

From the looks of it your `69**` was mistaken for a `70**`. As above, bebn said he'll have a look when he's able!
seeing that i got the impostor right made my day ^^ in addition to the baccalaureat's results (frenchs' final exam sort of) so i'm kinda happy of both news and i was thinking i would be last and here i am at 22nd place !
Bro I should've submitted! My total of two guesses were right (89 and 112). I wasn't even gonna get last place!

Fixed all of these, thank you!
i could argue for a 112 score but 111 is funnier so let's keep it like that

congrats to everyone and especially SomeGuy712x, i really thought i had this one in the bag but if there's anyone im happy to lose to its you

after seeing the answers ive got mixed feelings about some of the design choices made for some of these tracks, but overall the event was fun so thanks to the hosts, post with more thoughts someday maybe eventually if im not too lazy no promises
I sure had a lot of fun picking these songs out and realizing how terribly wrong I was about how well-known certain things were. Had I been guessing I probably wouldn't've gotten more than a handful correct, so I'd say I got my effort's worth from this end.

Ah, perhaps I didn't phrase it quite right: while the Fire Emblem theme itself is in Shadow Dragon (and, well, almost every other FE game) this specific version only plays in the OVA. They do sound pretty similar, admittedly, but it would be very strange for them to repurpose an orchestrated track from an unpopular 1996 animation and use it for a DS game in 2008. In any case, I feel safe in asserting that they are not the exact same recording, and thus not the same song. Hopefully that clarified it.

I look forward to next guessing competition! Eager to see what comes of our guessers and guess-inducers both.

Alright, fair enough, I guess.
BTW, how's the fact-checking for song 69 going? I'm curious about that.
Also, I wonder if maybe I could help pick some songs in a future contest?

Funnily enough, that fact-check part was a note to myself that I forgot to omit before the post, haha. Suffice to say, what checking I did confirmed what you said, so you can rest easy.

Sure, we can keep your name in mind and for whenever we end up hosting the next one.
