The transcript for the Event can now be found in the File Bin. http://bin.smwcentral.net/19 Thanks to everyone that came and had a great time learning SMILE. I hope to hold a second workshop sometime soon, probably not too long after SNN's workshop.

EDIT: WE CHANGED IRC CHANNELS! LOOK AT THE IRC SECTION BELOW FOR THE NEW DETAILS.

Hello SMWCentral. I hope you're enjoying the month of Halloween so far. I have a non-Halloween event planned for anyone interested in experimenting with hacking a game other than SMW.

On Saturday the 18th, from 8:30-10:30/11:00 PM EST (depending on how long it takes to get through what I want to teach) I will be hosting a small workshop to explain the basics of how to hack Super Metroid. Me and a friend from another IRC channel will be explaining how to use the Super Metroid editor, SMILE (Super Metroid Integrated Level Editor).

If you want to participate, you'll need to pick up the following materials from the link below:
http://acmlm.kafuka.org/uploader/get.php?id=207

This link contains SMILE itself, and a reference image showing the various parts of the SMILE interface.

Also, you will need to find a Super Metroid rom to work will.
I WILL NOT PROVIDE YOU WITH A ROM. YOU MUST FIND ONE YOURSELF.
That said, you'll need a rom named </i>"Super Metroid (JU) [!].smc"</font> to work with. I can't guarantee that any other type will work.

This event will be hosted in SMWC's official IRC channel on </i>irc.badnik.net #smwc</font>. If you do not know how to get on IRC and still wish to participate, post here and I will try to help you as best I can.

I hope to have a good turnout and look forward to seeing you there!

This looks interesting.Maybe I 'll try this.Super Metroid is a good game.
Need a hand from me? :)

...oh wait; Yeah I'm still banned from the channel.
Question: Is this level editor similar to Lunar Magic or more like Eggvine?

--------------------
I made a standalone game once, look for Seabug Stampede on Google Play.
How do I get on IRC?
meh
WEB Marioman#:

-Get an IRC client (I recommend Chatzilla)
-Then connect to the server (/server irc.centralchat.net) and join the room (/join #smwcentral).

I wont join this event, though I'll probably end up idling anyway.

Actually, neither. It's a tile-based program. That means there are no objects and that everything is created out of copy-pasting tiles. That also means that any tile can be flipped any direction horizontally and vertically, and can act like any tile you want it to.
I'll definitely be there to monitor it. I'm not really a Super Metroid fan (Metroid-fans, you may commence the flaming now), but I will monitor it, and possibly check it out if I get truly interested.

...of course, I will be a bit late due to getting off of work at 8:00, but meh.
What THH said.

Also, what's the graphics part like? Do tell us please {:)
I've decided to push the event back to 8:30 PM the same day because one of the guys helping me can't make it for 8:00. That should help you in that aspect THH. It also helps Bloodstar, who just let me know on IRC.

Waweegee: Graphics editing and stuff is a little more complex than in SMW simply because you need to be careful of how much space you use. Perhaps we'll go into detail about graphical editing during the workshop, though I'm not sure, as it could be considered an intermediate-level function. That and I'm not 100% sure how the agenda will go.

Well space is not much of a problem if you re-point the data. :P

And unlike SMW. SM uses a full snes type gfx file instead of just 1/3.
And backgrounds can be uses on FG and the other way around.

Well, yeah, you can re-point the data, but were you there when Acheron and DSO were telling DMantra how to do it? Their explanation went on for almost two hours! It's not necessarily an easy thing to do, that's why i didn't bother mentioning that you can re-point the things.
I'm lazy and used a time zone convertor, and it seems this will happen in the middle of Sunday. {:)

What I meant by my graphics question was: What tools do you need? Can you just open the ROM in YY-CHR, or do the graphics have to be extracted with SMILE/something else?

The CRE file (The GFX file that is loaded almost all the time) and Scenery GFX is compressed. SMILE can decompress it for you into a .gfx ( .gfx is not a real GFX file so you will have to select snes type manually.)
All other GFX like enemies, beams, and samus (and so on) is stored in the ROM directly. (But not on the same place)

All GFX for the intro sense are also compressed. SMILE can handle decompressing those too; So no problem!
Another thing: Will I have to draw stuff over the original configurations of the tiles?
I'd attend If I wasnt banned for who-knows-how-long
I didnt even do something that bad >.>
how i wish i could go.but i dont have IRC and the event would be at
0:30AM where i live (GMT:+1 T_T)

Smw2 For Ever!

Poll: yes?

· Yes! · (Results)
I already know how to make a super metriod hack. ( srry for my rudeness)

--------------------

Well that's fine, so do I and a couple other people on the site. This is primarily for anyone who wants to learn basic SMILE.

We won't cover more advanced stuff?
