While I am most definitely going to miss the old site for nostalgia reasons, I do say the UI is much better and cleaner and I think this is a HUGE improvement over the previous ones. I am a little peeved that all the old themes are gone but overall the site looks stunning.
BE NICE TO PETS.
COOL!
Now, this is a great evolution of the site due to huge dedication. Now I can see that the future is now and SMW hacking will be better and easier than ever thanks to the new design. Thank you so much!
Yes! SMWC2 Yay! GoodWork! TEClinc1 im sorry if i misspelled your name:):D
i came back. hello world.
cool

Found another issue with the new layout. I wanted to place a verbose comment on a hack's page, and the text box is much less wide than I'm used to. I grab the lower-right corner of the text box with my mouse in an effort to expand it to the right, and it only adjusts the box's size vertically. This makes it much more annoying to see everything I've typed in a non-short comment on a hack's page now.

Seriously, why make that functionality change for the worse?
I agree that some displays are janky on mobile. Weird that beta testers didn't report it.
So how do I switch back to the old site?

Answered under "What about the old design?" in the first post.
I literally only signed up for having access to the old website... Considering that the number of users using the old theme was about 3 times as higher as the ones using the new theme, I don't see why didn't they just abandon the redesign and leave the site be. While the scheme really does a nice job on replicating the older site, it's still not as I remember.

Curious as to when and how you got this statistic? If you're referring to the old counters in Edit Profile when they were there...

... The amount of active users using a opt-in beta is naturally going to be massively lower than the total amount of site users that haven't opted in - considering 40-50k of them are inactive and hadn't signed in since the beta was announced.

Telinc basically answers this in the original post Koopster has already kindly pointed you towards:

Its code is difficult to work with, requiring a lot of effort to produce results that are subpar compared to what SMWC2 allows us to do.

Essentially, the old site was holding us back; the new site makes it easier for new stuff to be made.

The redesign is convenient. I see no problems with it navigation-wise or aesthetically. At first it was a little hard to get used to after so many years but at this point it's a nice change.

Best not to create accounts just to stir up arguments.

Just use the legacy theme!
