entropy and disorder - a low-effort experiment

StandardKaizo

Let's begin 2023 in the wildest way possible.

entropy and disorder is the result of an exercise I imposed to myself, made in one week. The goal was to create a low-effort romhack in a short amount of time, which was a challenge for me as I'm not used to either both make low-effort levels or work under time restrictions (aside the 24hoSMW contests I'm fond of). Technically it's a Standard: Very Hard and Kaizo: Light romhack featuring 9 short levels: you'll find 8 standard/kaizo-ish levels and a 2-section kaizo level, built around hex edits and various asm (stacked and following sprites, a few blocks and uberasm as well as some modified vanilla sprites) despite its old-school aesthetics and unsampled music. Every level is accessible from the start and can be played in any order, and there's nothing to unlock if you beat all the levels.

There's just a clarification that should be made: this hack is not supposed to be good, it's just an experiment. While the final product is overall playable (thankfully enough!), the hack features a lot of questionable decisions (janky mechanisms, difficulty alterning bewteen standard and kaizo, cryptic setups, slowdown and so on) and occasional situations where the setups are inconsistent to execute that makes this hack quite unorthodox (and broken if I dare to say) by nature. Consequently, only a few people may enjoy it and play it entirely.

It'll not be submitted in the hack section given its nature so I'll rather keep it in my filebin. For the curious people, I also included a text file with comments about each level which details my experience with the creation of each the level.

Good luck to those who wants to try this experiment!

This was a fun little hack! I enjoyed the gimmicks in each level, they all stood out from one another. Which was of course further accentuated by the level design, despite how rushed it may or may not be within a week's time.

My favourites would have to be
periodic ghost
and
where no man jumps
, both are simple yet effective!

The level names and commentary were just as enjoyable to read too, it's always nice to learn about the creator's thoughts and the creation process.

Overall, I'd say that your experiment was a success, and a neat way to start off 2023!
What is a Lunar Magic, and can I eat it?
