Your Master of Catastrophe - Winter 2023

As it's already been well-established, the host for this winter's Mario Party themed C3 is none other than MC Ballyhoo. I was given the opportunity to draw his avatar, which was fun! But then I had an idea.

I thought it would also be fun to not only show off the full art of him, but the development of said art too! It all took place on a big MS Paint canvas, so I decided to label the notable stuff from A to H. There are also blurbs for each label that give insight as to what's going on. Let's take a look!

Here's the full drawing, I think it took me like four days to make?

And here's how the canvas looked before I cropped everything out! The blurbs are in the collapse tags below.
A: Show/Hide

You've already seen the completed art! Probably at least four times by now.

B: Show/Hide

References are important! That's what all three of these images are doing here. They were also used for colour and a sense of proper proportions.

C: Show/Hide

These are miscellaneous things, like Big Top's mouth, which I left a copy of in case I needed to redo its position, and colours I splotched down so I wouldn't forget about them. There's also a rough sketch of MC Ballyhoo's right hand and microphone, which leads into...

D: Show/Hide

This! This was hands down the most complicated thing to draw (pun intended). But it was more than just due to it being a hand holding onto something. I had to abide by the laws of MS Paint and use transparent selection to my advantage. By drawing the hand in another colour, I could effectively create a second "layer" to place on top of things already drawn, and vice versa. Which is exactly what I did once the lineart was done. Despite the tediousness, it feels good to exercise around MS Paint's limitations! Aside from that, there's the rest of the hand and mic's progress, along with a flipped left hand for size reference.

E: Show/Hide

An unfinished version of MC Ballyhoo, which I used as a dummy for placing his right hand and mic over. If you look closely, his bow tie is slightly more to the left than the one in the completed art!

F: Show/Hide

Copies of MC Ballyhoo's tongue, because I was indecisive on how I wanted it to look. The lineart of the bottom of his mouth is there as well for potential do overs. Backups are important too!

G: Show/Hide

Just a little swirl that I doodled as a physical reference for the mic's cord. It helps to figure out the motion of what I'm drawing sometimes, for accuracy and such.

H: Show/Hide

I have no idea who this little guy is, which might be concerning. He's cute and all, but he appeared out of nowhere one day. I actually ended up using his colours as the palette for my own art of MC Ballyhoo.

And so, that's all I really have to say on how this art came to be. Going in-depth about it was pretty enthralling, since I never usually talk about these sorts of things. Hopefully some of it is found to be useful? Either way, have a happy C3!

fun fact: this was sorted literally in the last few days, because i thought chuck quizmo was the same thing as mc ballyhoo he was going to be the host so a new avatar wasn't required, then i was told they're not so... yeah. thankfully, eman saved the day!

Thank you too! The lack of context actually helped me shape a more general pose for MC Ballyhoo, I had a feeling he was still going to be his extravagant self.

That's honestly understandable, both characters do look rather similar to each other. Even the Super Mario Wiki addresses it.

In all seriousness, this is pretty neat to see! I know people can tend to have very different ways of going about porting/covering something from one medium to another, so to see some of the strategies you're using here in motion is very neat. Perhaps this could even help other people with their own art creation in terms of understanding how to decompose a reference into it's core components and reconstruct them. Overall, neat thread!

E-man, what other characters from SMW Central do you want to draw as well?

It's nice to have the process "canvas" of drawing Ballyhoo. Having references and copies of your drawing is definitely one of the advantages of digital art. Ballyhoo H might be my favorite.

You did a lovely job with the avatar!

It's really cool to have some insight into the E-man Art Process™. I knew you drew him in Paint given that it's your tool of choice, but seeing exactly how you go about separately drawing and then combining bits and pieces of the drawing is really impressive, and the patience you have, commendable! I think most people have jumped ship to Aseprite. Using the transparent selection tool is certainly clever!
