Mario Mania - A Simple Hack By Hammerer

Standard

MARIO MANIA...
...is a project I've been working on since last year, and it will be released soon. Let's go introduce it...

This project came about after some failed hacks I tried to do. The result was reasonable, but soon after I decided that I had to redo everything from scratch.

The hack 'Mario Mania' is simple; no surprises or anything that strays from what the Mario franchise is all about: running, shooting fireballs, and jumping on stupid goombas. Even so, I made a few things a little more complex than the default, but nothing major.

The Plot:

The story is a bit beyond the same, but still stays along the lines of the Mario franchise: boring kidnapped princesses and evil koopas.

The story is based on the episode 'A Little Learning', from the Super Mario World's cartoon, where curiously the princess Peach is the teacher from the koopalings.

The story is told by cutscenes, which appear right at the beginning and after completing some levels, and I think this is a good point in my hack. By the way, don't you think that a simple text at the beginning telling the story at the beginning and nothing else isn't a little boring?

The story starts like this: Mario is walking through the Mushroom Kingdom, when suddenly he sees Iggy Koopa talking to himself, having evil plans with Princess Peach just because she gave him boring math lessons (this is the reference to cartoon). However, Mario reveals himself to the villain trying to stop him, but Iggy runs away and sends two galoombas to finish off the plumber. (Did they make it?)

And speaking of galoombas, this is another variety of the hack: In addition to the goombas, which are stompable, we have the galoombas, which turn upside down when hit (In fact it's not even new, since it is from the original Super Mario World).

Look the first scene of the game:

And our adventure begins...

The Levels:

The levels are linear, that is, one after the other. The hack doesn't have an overworld, because I don't think I'm ready to work with it yet. The duration and difficulty of the levels is varied, I think I didn't manage it very well. Some are longer and some are shorter, some are harder and some are easier, I think the characteristics of the levels depended on my mood.

I managed to include myself in the hack, being the 'narrator', giving tips to Mario and to you, the player. Isn't it kind of strange, in most hacks and traditional games, a message by who knows who? But this inclusion isn't a big deal, it's just a '-Hammerer' at the end of the messages, which are embedded in signs instead of the Super Mario World message boxes.

Other screenshots...

And the hack goal is in the Super Mario Bros. 3 style.

As you might have noticed, the level design of the hack is 'choconilla', combining the style of Super Mario World with the Gamma V's generic tileset. I also created some extremely simple graphics and ripped others, like the checkpoint, jellyfish and burners, which you'll see later on.

The second level is Super Mario Bros. style. 3, with a theatrical theme and the classic Super Leaf. However, you can't fly with the Super Leaf, just swing your tail and glide. Also, on this level, you meet the not-so-lovable Boomerang Bro.

Yes, the hack has custom powerups, one for each level. For each powerup, there is a message in the levels explaining how it works.

The third level has a flower garden theme, with bugs like a lot of munchers, wigglers, spinys and boring lakitus throwing more spinys. Also, on this level, you gain access to the Boomerang Suit, which you can use for a littlepuzzle in a sewer sublevel.

The fourth level is the cave. What would the Mario franchise be without a cave level, right? In this level, you get the Shell Suit which can be used to get an Ace Coin from a block and other things. As expected, in the cave we have buzzy beetles, swoopers (bats), chucks, some munchers and darkness. When entering the pipe that leads to grassland, another cutscene begins, where Mario, feeling sad, reflects on his hard work, where the poor man just wanted to walk... However, to cut the depressive vibe, Luigi appears, saying that Iggy Koopa invaded Peach's castle and kidnapped her. So, the plumber gets angry and goes to rescue her.

The fifth level is athletic. You find, in this level, the Propeller Suit, some parakoopas, mushrooms, bounce clouds, donut lifts etc.

The sixth level is the same as the previous one, except for one detail: the dark sky, that is, a rainstorm. This theme is heavily inspired by the 'Cloudbolt Chasm' level from the New Super Mario Bros. hack called Newer Super Mario Bros. DS, so much so that it has the same music. Additionally, this level contains autoscroll, parabeetles and the rocket boot.

As the sixth level final already predicts, the seventh is beach. Bubble Flowers, angry crabs, jumping fishes and water there's too much.

The eighth level is, of course, the sea. Here, you will see fishes, urchins, jellyfish, bloopers and... water. The Frog Suit also can be seen here.

And, at the end of that level, another serie of cutscenes begins. This time, it's not something very relevant in the story, just Mario in the Green Hill Zone, Sonic's zone, which appears to the plumber. The two 'rivals' exchange banter with each other, then Mario goes to the forest where Iggy went with the princess.

And, as already mentioned, the next level is the forest, full of poisonous mushrooms, poisonous water, insects and falling leaves. The powerup of the time is the Tanooki Suit, which can be used to break a block in its statue form and the same functionalities as the Super Leaf. To vary the gameplay, this time the sublevel is a vertical bonus room, where you can get some coins.

The next level is hot... obviously it's the desert! And, at this level, pokeys, volcano lotus, goombas hidden in blocks and the beloved hammer brothers have tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much.

To relieve the desert heat, you couldn't miss an Ice Flower to cool off... But also, the desert levels are also the perfect place for another powerup... the Superball Flower, from Super Mario Land!

However, I think the custom powerups created a pressure on me where I had to deal with a bunch of powerups to put in the levels, which aren't many.

The eleventh level is the opposite of the previous one. I'm talking about the snow! Bundled koopas, snow galoombas, piranha plants that blow spikes into the air (forgot their name, sorry), Ice Brothers and goombas are the enemies of this level.

The sublevel here is a cave, better, an ICE cave with a lot of munchers where you can get a Fire Flower to get a frozen Ace Coin. The powerup here is the Penguin Suit, that will balance you on ice etc.

Boo... This level, at first glance, appears to be a cemetery, but no, it's a ghost house. The graveyard is just the ghost house's outside. Did you read the message in the screenshot? What did you understand from the message? Yes, the cemetery has two sides, as say. But what would the 'Lost Side' be? Who knows... all you know is you're on the 'Boo Side'. And, here, boo's and other variants abound. This time, I didn't see any custom powerups suitable for this level, just mushrooms.

The ghost house is, as expected, a puzzle, involving ON/OFF blocks and fake doors. I think the puzzle I created was good, but on closer inspection, it turned out pretty easy too. Maybe I'm saying this because I know how to solve the puzzle, but you might get confused.

And let's go to the last level completed at the moment... an airship. What can you expect here? Autoscroll, burners, bullet bill, cannons and the Cloud Flower. In my opinion, this level is a little harder than normal, but on the other hand, it's not too long, and I've also left some mushrooms around the airship for you to hold on to. And, to vary the gameplay even more, how about a little battle with Boom-Boom, the airship comander?

There are only three levels left for the hack to be ready: the volcano, where you'll battle with all types of brothers possible: Boomerang, Fire, Hammer and Sledge. Obviously Ice Bro is not at this level because it doesn't make sense. And there's nothing better than repaying the enemy with his own weapon: the hammer. Yes, the Hammer Suit, my favorite powerup (see my name). Here are the first screens of this level:

The last two levels, which are still on the drawing board, are the big, splendid castle of Iggy Koopa, that is, the grand finale of the game! Just not! It is indeed the ending, following the hack's story, but something will make Mario investigate a secret Bowser factory after defeating Iggy (sorry for the spoiler, but what Mario game did Bowser defeat him in?), which will likely start more a plumber's journey. Yes, I am announcing that, after this hack, there will be another one, where I plan to do much bigger things, which will have a new story, in the same timeline as this hack.

If you want to see all the levels, from start to finish, check out my youtube channel, which is at the footer of this thread. There, I post all the levels that are ready, from start to finish. I also post 100% saves of some hacks not available on SMWCentral on my channel. At the moment, there is only one 100% save, which is the 'Mario Game' hack, but more saves will appear in the future. I hope you've been interested.

If you've read this far, thank you from the bottom of my heart. This hack took a lot of time out of my routine, and I hope all the lost time was worth it. I'm sorry if I made any spelling mistakes, I'm not from the U.S.A. Honestly, I don't think the hack turned out as expected, but it came pretty close, and I'm tired of redoing hacks from scratch. I regret using some things in the hack, but I think I got others right.

And that's it! Thanks for reading all of this (if you read it at all), see you later!
