Celeste Mario's Zap & Dash! (NES SMB1 Hack)

Non-Super Mario WorldStandardFull ReleaseScreenshotsTrailer

Pretty-Witchy Hana-chan-chi! (Yeah I just had to do this in imitation of the Pretty Princess theme of this C3)

So anyway, some of you might still remember some SMB1 hack posted 5 years ago in Winter 2018 C3. What did it evolve into?
Well, after more years of engine work, I finally got impatient and wanted to actually release something. The result is this "hastily-done minihack" meant as an engine test, called
Celeste Mario's Zap & Dash!

By this point though, you might ponder "isn't there a hack called Celeste.smc already?" Well yes, so it's up to you to judge how this one fares compared to that. (You might as well call this Celeste.nes if you like.)
To compare my hack with Celeste.smc:
>The size of my game is relatively smaller (I guess?), being merely a 2-month product, but my goal is to bring a more pleasant experience with every feature added.
>A lot of attention was paid to the controls and physics, and they were tweaked to behave more like Celeste, i.e. more responsive, faster acceleration/deceleration, and removing the need of the run button; also adding pre-input timer and coyote timer to avoid the requirement of extreme precision. Diagonal dashing behaves correctly instead of combining X+Y momentum like in the SMW hack.
>My game allows several advanced moves like Super, Hyper, Wallbounce etc.
>Metroid-styled aesthetics and a Super Metroid styled minimap! (Because the engine is intended for a Metroidvania game that's still in the works.)

Anyway, hope you enjoy the game! Can you collect all 100 + 1 moons?

RHDN Release Page
(Note: As of this C3 post, the v1.00 release does not use the NES 2.0 header format which can cause some compatibility problems on some emulators; the Mesen emulator runs this fine. I'll likely fix that issue and some other minor bugs, and add some more quality-of-life changes, in a future version.)

While this hack looks small, lots of effort was put into such amazing work. Great job!

The foreground details are very reminiscent that the player is on a planet, and I like games that make objects a specific color but have identification.

Great job! #smrpg{y}
Saw this in Romhacking.net more recently. It looks very promising! Might gonna review it very soon.

I played through this a couple days ago after getting linked to it on RHDN and I think it might be the most fun I've had with a NES platformer in *AGES*.

Amazing, amazing work. It plays so smoothly, and feels so clean.

Worthy of the name "Celeste.nes".
I'm not a doctor.

Ooh, is this the one that I've been seen a couple of gifs about on Discord lately? It's nothing short of mind-blowing what you turned the SMB1 base game into. It definitely looks like it could be a made-from-scratch retro fangame, so it's all the more impressive that it's actually playable on an NES. I don't actually have an emulator handy, but I have no trouble believing everyone who says it plays well.

Great job!

Had a play through this, and it was fine. Good luck with finishing Mario Gaiden.
Also, was this meant to be console compatible? On my end, the text would never display correctly (just static corrupt dots), but the selection functionality still worked.
Mama mia! Never saw such an advanced SMB1 hack! Looks very fun and colorful, im gonna try this tonight for sure

It's really incredible that you used SMB1 engine to create the hack, aside from the small Mario GFX, it really doesn't like SMB1 at all.
The hack greatly blending the gameplay of Mario and Celeste together, also some Metroidvania elements, and the gimmicks are really fun!
I've collected 100+1 Moons in that hack and I'd say that's a fantastic experience, really recommend that hack! 10/10
Wow, this is an incredible project! It's really cool to see what people can do with the NES Mario games now of days, let alone SMB1.

I have tried this hack and I can't praise this amazing work more! This is really an awesome hack, which has so many new features that I can't imagine it's a SMB1 hack. The control of player is well made and there're even some advanced moves related to dash from Celeste, and there're many Metroid theme stuffs in the hack as well. Not to mention its fantastic level design, despite the fact that these designs were only made in 2 months.
SMB1 hacks made with your engine must have infinite potential. I am looking forward to other hacks made with this amazing engine you've been working on over 10 years!
Thank you for making this amazing hack and that amazing engine!
From what most people have told me, SMB1 was very hard to hack because it was a 42kb rom with no space left for anything else.

So the rom must have been expanded, it looks very cool. Probably one of the coolest looking SMB1 I've seen.
This is a pretty amazing hack, I don't have much experience with smb1 hacks (probably played less than 5) but this feels great to play and there's a lot of attention given to things, nice work!
Really impressive to see SMB1 busted open like this - every NES Mario game I've ever seen didn't stray too far from their source outside of tremendous difficulty (having seen very few, admittedly), so it's something special to see a game completely retooled into a completely new identity.

Speedruns of this are going to be really cool to behold. Honestly wouldn't be surprised to see this getting play in GDQ or something!

How did you collect 101 moon? I just get 100 and don't know where to search the last
Im currently at the 2/3 of the game (I think) and im loving it!
Very polished and fun to play. Looks extremely good for a NES game too!

Oh, it's the hack I already stumbled over on Twitter!

I already mentioned it back then, and I'll say it again: This looks phenomenal! I definitely want to give this a try. Just need to figure out the best way to do so. I don't love playing hacks in emulators, but I don't have an NES, so I might have to.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
