For some transparency we're posting the event volunteer guidelines publicly.
Reminder for Event Volunteers
If you are volunteering in an ongoing event, either as a judge or helper, you are somewhat representing the site and will be held to our Site-Wide Rules & Terms of Use. tl;dr just conduct yourself in a fair and respectful manner towards other community members as best you can.
Info for Current Contest Judges
Congratulations you are a contest judge! Here's a few bits of information we have for your role.
Time & Effort Commitment
Judging an event can often take a lot of effort, as such we encourage that you go at a pace that you are most comfortable with to make progress. We realize people have lives outside of SMW Central, so when you start judging an event there is no expectation from staff to complete your judging as fast as possible. We accommodate judges' schedules as best we can during events, and only press for wrapping up a contest if there's an overwhelming need to move onto other events (this does not happen often).
It's inevitable that the teams we put together for judging have a range of skill as players and have different availability. Individually, you have no obligation to keep up pace with one another, so no worrying about being ahead or behind the other judges. There is no expectation that judges complete levels at the same rate.
Dropping Out
If at any point you need to drop out or cannot complete an event, it is perfectly fine to do so. Usually a judge team has enough people to account for someone leave, or sometimes we will have backup judges ready. Things where you need to step away, like your well-being and comfort, etc. take precedence over a SMW hacking event so don't feel pressured to keep your commitment to us over those other things.
Re-Volunteering
When contests are coming up in the calendar, we will ask past judges if they are interested in judging an upcoming event. As to not cultivate burnout or to ask too much from volunteers we do have a soft policy of not asking people do successive events.
Giving Feedback
Usually in the course of judging an event, especially a level design contest, you may be asked to give written feedback or feel the need to give written feedback. We ask that in this process you be as constructive and fair as you can and focus on things relevant to the event and not be disparaging towards or personally critical of creators.
Prospective Event Volunteers
So you want to take part in SMW Central events or contests? From time to time, we reach out to the community when we have a need to bring on additional folks to help out with an event or be a contest judge. If you are interested in that, see details below.
Event Helper
This is a staff role with the PR Team and only open when applications are open. Keep an eye out for announcements on openings if you want to apply for that.
Contest Judging
If you are keen to judge an event please share below what sort of event(s) you are interested in and what experience you have (in not too many words). We do tend to look for people who have some background, or other sort of qualifying ability, in the area in which a contest is held--i.e. if you have never played or made Kaizo, we'd likely not consider you for a KLDC judge.
