The future of KLDC

As 2024 Events Calendar has been announced, I feel it's the right time to discuss what the future of Kaizo Level Design Contest would be like.

This year's OLDC is novelty, which you can tell by allowing both standard and kaizo levels being judged by two groups of judges. It turned out to be quite successful (even though we didn't have as many entries as in 2021) and that we can host more contests like this as if we couldn't have allowed both standard and RTA kaizo in the first place. Anyway, SMW Central has had history of shunning kaizo, but that was understandable when RTA kaizo was just unthinkable. However, it might've existed for a long time, but the hack that started the revolution was Banzai Mario World, which came out in 2015. It's 8 years of difference!

Do you think KLDC will be history or will it be ran in the future, maybe with some twists? If we happen to have BLDC and CLDC with both categories allowed, a regular KLDC (i.e. CLDC where kaizo elements are required) will have no point. If there are more major contests that allow kaizo than standard, that'd be (IDK how to call this) discriminatory to anyone who doesn't make kaizo at all. Discuss!

Allow me to unpack this...

I think you should look at the way KLDC is that it exists and will continue to exist because there are people that are interested in making Kaizo levels to show to the community their skills, so why ask if KLDC standalone is going away? What is currently happening is that there is appeal in the idea of pairing it up with VLDC-type contests (As with the case of the recent OLDC) to give KLDC the restrictions standard level contests had for a long time with the VLDCs in the past. I think such pairing is an interesting break from tradition to allow for more novel ways SMWC's level design contests can be entered and enjoyed and therefore, I see no reason why you feel that such pairings would be "discriminatory" to standard-only level designs, especially when the recent OLDC has its own additional set of judges and criteria that is specific for Kaizo levels due to the nature of such designs...

On Pixel Art Requests: Depends on what it is and if I have the time for it. If its complex and I don't have the time, don't expect me to accept it.

Projects I support:

So, if there's a kaizo category for every major contest with more restrictions than CLDC, there's still parity for both standard and kaizo parts of the community. KLDC's future would still be safe and kaizo folks would get more occasions to show off. Working around contest limitations while being allowed to do kaizo is certainly something new. I'm sure that would keep the hacking community engaged.
