Help needed - custom backgrounds

I am new to SMW hacking and would like to use custom artwork for backgrounds, and have tried many methods and viewed many tutorials over the past few weeks, but have been unsuccessful. Would anyone be willing to walk me through it?
The main tutorial on ExGraphics is probably the best resource, but I will assume you have looked at this already.

Something to keep in mind when making custom backgrounds, or any graphic resource really, is that there is only so much space available in memory to load image data. You're dealing realistically with an area of about 128x192 pixels (which is the area of the 3 background graphics slots) to store data for a background--you can get a bit more space if you sacrifice foreground slots and squeeze in more tiles--which limits the kind of backgrounds you can make and the sort of detail you can get in there.

There are tools (like SnesGFX) that will shrink and optimize source images, de-duplicate tiles, and give you the necessary output files for inserting into a hack, but that can only get you so far if the background is complicated or detailed.
I was able to download the tool and make four .bin files small enough to fit in the FG and BG slots, and they appear normal in YY-CHR, but when I import them to my level, they still appear as a jumble of pixels.

Would you be willing to walk through it with me to see what I'm doing wrong? I just want to make a custom background to use as the title screen for my romhack.
