Super Mario Bros. CD - FamicomCD

Super Mario WorldStandardWork in ProgressScreenshotsTrailer

Heya! Me and the SMBCD Team have been hard at work to bring you the best version of Super Mario Bros. CD that we can truly muster! And we appreciate the amount of support that we've been given relating to SMBCD, and that only motivates us to keep pushing towards trailers, demos and eventually the final release, so as a treat, I've got quite a bit of SMBCD content!

If you haven't seen SMBCD before, here's a brief description from my original C3 thread: "Super Mario Bros. CD is a what if of sorts for a SMB game on a CD based console based in good ol' SMW"! The game functions off of MSU-1 and heavily utilizes Mode 0 for it's levels.

As promised, here is the content; a fun little SMBCD trailer!

I will take a few new screenshots later as I'm rather busy, but at least there's a trailer.

ALSO! ASMers Wanted!

We've got tons of musicians, artists and graphic designers, and many others working on SMBCD, but we are severely lacking in ASM programmers, especially those well versed in MSU-1 ASM. If you're experienced with ASM of all types, sprites, blocks, MSU-1, etc. please send a message via Discord (kingmayro), or via SMWC!
It seems like some sort of bizarre fever dream for a game I've never played in a reality that never existed but does. It's a really cool concept for a hack.
The use of Mode 0 and all the different independent layers really does give the game something unique.
Don't remember if you told me about hack plans when I played your CLDC level, but glad to see you've moved forward with the idea!

The SNES can do a lot of cool stuff, but mode 0 stuff y'all're doing here makes one wonder about an NES that never improved the color depth, but did give more layers to play with. Kinda like a 32X addon to the NES. Really cool.

I never thought the 8-bit art style would be a great pair with the high-quality music of MSU-1, but the way you've combined them is so perfect! The atmosphere takes you back to the 90s, as if you're playing an NES Mario game while listening to your favorite radio station! The use of Mode 0 here is a great idea, considering the style you're working in already has a limited set of colors, you essentially get access to many of the features of the SNES with little downside! I can't wait to see where this project goes!
Turns out web design has it perks (when it works)
Not the first time I have seen Mode 0 being used in a SMW hack, but each time I see it, it generally amazes me that you are willing to experiment with different things the SNES is capable of in order to realize your creative vision.

I am looking forward to seeing more of this hack in the future.
Modern Redrawn Mario Bros. 1.5 (last update - February 14, 2023, some new bonus frames, tons of minor touchups to various poses)

On Pixel Art Requests: Depends on what it is and if I have the time for it. If its complex and I don't have the time, don't expect me to accept it.

Funnily enough, the rom hack came before the CLDC level, but of course is based on a far older version, and it's a fairly mangled version of the main rom hack lmao.

Regardless, yeah! It's fun to think about all the different possibility that could've made something like this come to fruition officially. Also, I appreciate the compliments from everyone greatly! Thank you.
Interesting project #smw{:TUP:} And I love this music #smrpg{<3}

Mode 0 little bit goated I think :thinking:. Fun to work with too so that’s neat!

Also yeah, it was a struggle to get that release year. We almost had to go 1996!
This looks and sound absolutely incredible! I love these sorts of alternate reality hacks, and everything just feels so on point here. Can't wait to give this a try once it releases!
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
Interesting idea. Some of those graphics are pretty nice for being 2bpp. Honestly, I don't know why Lunar Magic doesn't have Mode 0 level modes yet, considering the 12 unused ones (or 16 if you count 03-06). I'll admit that I don't know much about the MSU-1...aside from it having its own registers, what's different about programming it compared to the stock SNES?

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.

There's not a whole lot of difference besides the registers, calling PCMs and certain parts of the .MSU file.
I've never seen a hack like this before it's like an entire new game! Keep up the good work. #smw{:TUP:}
This looks AMAZING AS HELL. I knew that the SNES had CD attachment to compete with the Sega CD and Sonic CD, so they wanted to make a Sonic CD-like game for Mario but that idea was a flop, but Famacom CD was able to make what it was going to look like and from the trailer it would be one of the best SMW rom-hack(in my opinion)ever in 2025!#smrpg{y}
wow. toss another "this shouldn't but work, but it does" on the pile. i really like this "bastard fidelity" aesthetic; the 8bpp graphics with all the layering and CD audio is like some alternative universe PC Engine CD. it's like a fantasy console specification inside another console. the art is already really strong, and i don't think this would have worked out so well if it weren't for it feeling so unified. congratulations, and best of luck. looking forwards to whatever you cook up.
