lx5 & PoryGone present: 🏝️ Super Mario World in Archipelago (version 2) 🏝️

Super Mario WorldMiscellaneous

Hello SMWC! I've come here again with something I developed in secret over half a year ago for Archipelago and alongside PoryGone we kept doing minor adjustments over that time to make it possible to merge it upstream.

Archipelago is a cross-game modification system which randomizes different games, then uses the result to build a single unified multi-player game. Items from one game may be present in another, and you will need your fellow players to find items you need in their games to help you complete your own.

What I made possible in the existing SMW implementation is that you have more locations to check out, a bunch of QoL changes to make the experience a lot more enjoyable and other minor stuff, you can read the PR/full changelog in here.

The original implementation was made by PoryGone and they did a really good job including the randomized game into the ecosystem that is Archipelago. It locks the player out of their basic abilities (Run at full speed, swim, climb, carry, etc), powerups and even switch palaces. The levels are fully randomized in the map (doesn't randomize sublevels), meaning that it'll arrange everything logically in order to ensure you can complete a game.
You can either search for Yoshi Eggs to complete your goal or defeat a certain amount of bosses (which also are randomized) and then defeat Bowser at Valley of Bowser.

You can play this version of SMW that's pending to be merged on the main branch by joining Archipelago's Discord Guild and searching on the Super Mario World channel or by downloading the apworld from the repo
Okay, now <emph>that's</emph> a SMW rando, turning it into a bit of a Metroidvania (which it has some potential — the switch palaces are some basic examples) but also compatibility with other, more ability-focused games.

Correct! It blends quite well with other games due to stripping Mario out of his abilities.

List of abilities/items randomized:
  • [Po] Powerups (can't gain Mushrooms, Flowers or Capes if you don't have enough Progressive Powerups)
  • [Sp] Spin Jump
  • [Ru] Run (can never gain full P-Speed, but you're not forced to walk)
  • [Ca] Carry items (also affects Yoshi's ability to carry stuff on his mouth)
  • [Sw] Swim (can't gain height, but can keep the current height if you mash really fast)
  • [Cl] Climb
  • [Yo] Yoshi (baby Yoshi is available, but disappears once it grows into an adult Yoshi)
  • [Ps] P-Switch (stays active for only one frame)
  • [Pb] P-Balloon
  • [St] Star
  • [YS, GS, RS, BS] Switch Palaces
  • [Sp] Special World/Zone clear flag (makes Masked Koopas appear)

In the rando you can set things up so you can explore additional locations in levels in addition to Exits.
Locations available to check:
  • [E1] Normal Exit
  • [E2] Secret Exit
  • [DC] Dragon Coins
  • [Mo] 3-Up Moons
  • [Hi] Hidden 1-Ups/1-Up Checkpoints
  • [Bo] Getting a Prize from a Bonus Block/Green Star Block
  • [BS] Hitting a blocks with a coin or item inside

Any of these locations can contain either useful items or junk items, be sure to check all of them! You may end up locking out someone else from progressing in their game, like having a Ocarina Hookshot in a random Question Mark Block you decided to not hit (it happened already on my sessions lol)
I mentioned Junk Items, those items can be either 1-Ups or a random coin amount, that way we have "useful" filler items instead of having nothing at all. Of course having too many locations to check makes you have even more junk besides your abilities and other progression stuff.

Everything listed is displayed on the map borders with the abbreviation specified inside the square brackets on each bullet.

Feel free to check Archipelago out, it's really fun, this video sums it up pretty well hahaha:
