Vanilla Level Design Contest #14 - Results

Happy almost-C3 everyone! Before we all dive in to the fun to come, though, we have some official business to address. Namely, the results of Vanilla Level Design Contest 14!

Before we get in,  TheJavabrew and I want to give a huge shoutout to our amazing judges:  JupiHornet,  Alex, cardboardcell,  FPzero, and snoruntpyro for the Standard levels, and  LouisDoucet, katun24, Stucat, and schema_tuna for the Kaizo levels. Special thanks to JupiHornet for helping with score tabulation and building the final results.

An interesting coincidence... I was 17th in VLDC12 and I am 17th here too. I guess the number 17 will be an permanent logo of my VLDC destiny :)

Congrats to everyone. There were amazing levels and super creativity. I was not surprised at all by Idol and Ampersam. I always felt that they would be first.

I am really looking forward to VLDC15! By the way, you can make me 17th in VLDC15 as well. No need to judge!
Now that I've started working, I won't be able to be as active as before. This is really very sad and depressing for me.

Oof, 50th... Before I even look at the judges' comments, lemme guess... It was the DANMAKU room that I knew I made too hard, and didn't nerf enough before the deadline, right?

...

Oh, right. The sound effects too. And, there's another major issue that can compromise the whole gimmick of requiring Yoshi to enter the pipes, which I didn't notice until about two weeks after the deadline.

Yeah, I mistakenly put all of the vertical pipe exits 1 tile too high, so entering the pipe while small without Yoshi erroneously allows the player to advance to the next area. It only properly resets the room if you enter a pipe as big Mario without Yoshi. Man, I wish I could go back in time and fix all of those and nerf the DANMAKU room further to be much more reasonable before the deadline.

I did make an "unofficial" V1.3 of my level afterwards (V1.2 is what was judged) that fixes the vertical pipe exits. Perhaps in the future, I'll make a V1.4 that polishes this level up even more.

(BTW, if a compilation hack of the VLDC14 entries is made in the future, I would like to request that V1.3 of my level be used, which fixes the vertical pipe exits to work as intended, but doesn't change anything else about the level design, aside from accidentally altering the Parakoopa bounce heights in the KOOPARADE room, but that's a very minor issue.)

Nope, not an oversight. I intentionally allowed that to be an alternate option for clearing the room. In fact, it's possible to bounce off of the leaping Chuck (or maybe the Pokey) to reach the pipe too. The blue shell is simply meant to be the most obvious method of clearing the room.

Super Mario Bros. 2 has nice style.

As always, congratulations to the winners and thanks to all the participants and judges!
My personal picks were SIDELINE SPITTERS, The Legend of Mario, HIGH AS SHIT, outside are rocks, and CHUCK BLOCK ROCK, but there were a lot of really great levels that I didn't mention, and most of the levels in the entire entry were really interesting and a lot of fun to play.
I'm really looking forward to next year's VLDC15!
Wow, 13th place! That's exactly half of my ranking from last VLDC. I'll try my hardest to make it into the top 10 next time!
This was really fun. It's been a bit since I've made a level, especially one as evil as this one, so I'm glad many folks enjoyed it as much as I did making it lol

I'm really happy that I am out of the bottom 10 which is amazing.
All 5 judges put some hate on the mid-section of my level, but only one is really dishonest when it comes to gameplay.
I'm hoping someone will do a compilation hack of the VLDC14 entries which is the reason why I joined in.
Hopefully I'll participate another one in the next VLDC or CLDC.
Words can't fully describe how much of an honor it is to have gotten 14th place. Thanks to the judges for their hard work, and congrats to the winners!
Also, Underused Warehouse is the best level I have ever played.
Looking at the Standard Results (and including the Disqualified Entries), I got 63rd Place out of 70 Entries. Oh Dear. It seems I have to think long and Hard about What I am doing Wrong & come up with a new Strategy for whenever VLDC15 happens. Trying to remain Optimistic, Including the Kaizo Entries (Disqualified Entries Included), I got 63rd out of 89 Entries, so I guess that's not so bad. Still, I can do better. I can't be that terrible at Level Design. As stated, in Preparation for VLDC15, this is going to Require a Lot of Thought. #tb{:(}

I'm very happy about my placement! Congrats idol and AmperSam with an excellent level, and also shoutouts to Underused Warehouse,
Nitrogen's note block level, and of course, LONG CAVE for pushing the limits (of contest entries and also sublevels). I also appreciate the judges' comments; they were thorough and analyzed the levels very well.

For what I know, idol always uses long names in contest entries. Her SMB3 contest entry name is long and wild although SMB3 (except e-reader SMA4 levels) doesn't have level names.
