Paranormal Saga (formerly Unorthodox World) (16-level demo)

Super Mario WorldStandardWork in ProgressDemoScreenshotsVideos

Hello all, after 6 years of on/off work, loss of interest, differing visions and ideas, vigorous resource testing, and occasionally pestering ASMers for help (who I am grateful to for helping me), I bring to you a taste of...

Paranormal Saga (formerly Unorthodox World)

What is the background of this hack?

In a nutshell, I started this with a completely traditional vision (and undetermined name at the time) back in March or April of 2018, using this hack as a base. I wanted to have some unique world themes, such as a lava beach and snowy desert. If you saw any of these videos at all, you should know that they were all made for this hack in the past. But over the course of two years, I didn't feel satisfied. Plus, I was striving to see whether the resources I used at the time, particularly LX5's powerups patch, worked well for my needs. Sadly, some of these major resources did not, so I left them. One day in 2021, as I was tinkering with vanilla glitches and bugs with custom resources that could be taken advantage of, I realized, "Why not mix traditional design with glitch abuse and quirks with many vanilla sprites?" Thus, I named the hack 'Unorthodox World' (and later on till now, 'Paranormal Saga'). Please note that this hack also strives to take advantage of many (but not all!) practical unused vanilla features from the beta cage to the unused Yoshi mount smoke particles.

P.S.: You might notice that the title screen says 2019 instead of 2018. Well, both are technically true, but I think the real work started in mid-2019.

This demo contains 16 playable levels (including the intro) with two additional secret exits. 'Ghoulish Bridges' is meant to be a koopa kid level. There is only a basic snowy overworld, but I'd like to expand upon it ASAP. #tb{:j}

I saw some of your videos on your YouTube account. It's real nice you uploading a demo for us. i might give this a try.

While this overall approach isn't neccessarily my cup of tea, I think it's interesting to see this in a more "standart"-setting, as usually you would expect to see such a design approach in a kaizo-hack.
So yeah, definitely keep it up! :)

The fact that I'm seeing clever uses for the ghost house holes and beta birdcage is awesome in itself, but does No Turnbacks actually use Mode 0? Amazing!
Kinda in hibernation for a while. I hope to be back in full swing soon.
Thanks for the comments so far, guys! As for 'No Turnbacks', yes, it indeed uses mode 0!

My hack is 8 levels x 2 hack demos, You are same level counts compared to me.
My Overworld Design Contest 2025 entry from Zavok "Verdantoad Kingdom" (Before Nintendo Switch 2 released), Either other my SMW hacks is eternally hiatus.
Really cool demo. I love the more accessible style of level design with the interesting glitches. It shows a deeper knowledge of SMW.

The
Yoshification
glitch is the coolest for sure. I think my favorite level was the
coin collection level
.

I would recommend patching infinite lives because the player has to beat the intro level every time they game over.

Thanks for playing! As for the infinite lives... there's a 1-up at the very beginning of the intro level which is forced on the player so they don't get below zero lives and glitch out their lives counter. But going back to the intro level after gaming over? Don't you get to the title screen again like in the normal game? If so, then that's normal since there's no save prompt (except from the ghost house level) and I didn't think to add it in the other levels since I didn't focus much on the OW & you can choose whichever level to play.

I love the idea of creating a vanilla hack solely around weird and obscure glitches/interactions hidden inside SMW. I'm not sure if I'd want to play it myself, since some of the gimmicks do look la bit janky to interact with (like the layer scrolling one), but I'd definitely watch someone else play through a hack like this and think I'd get great enjoyment out of it. The hack's definitely nothing if not original!
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!

Thank you for the comment! You're not wrong about it being janky, but I strived to stay away from technical-looking design. After all, it's meant to traditional with a side of glitch abuse #tb{:D}
