hello. it's been a while. I'm in a better place now so I have decided to return, and what better time than c3? I'll be around.

...

what, my presence isn't enough? ok then... how about this:

A new Overworld sprite tool

Introducing BOWSIE, or Better Overworld Sprite Insertion Engine. The purpose of this tool is supersede carol's sprite tool by using, by default, the system used in the 9th Vanilla Design Contest hack.

The tool is similar to PIXI. Just enter your ROM name, your list and you're all set. It uses shared subroutines and stuff.

The tool includes support for tooltip generation, given a .json file is bundled within the sprite.
Now, you might be wondering, wait, doesn't this get rid of the original sprites? And for that, I say...

You can keep the original sprites!
No more losing the ghost house Boos or so. You want them? You have a choice to keep them. And if not, you get a bunch of free RAM.

Source code

The tool comes with four sprites.
Piranha Plant disassembly

This is a "disassembly" of the piranha plant overworld sprite found in the vanilla Super Mario World. Did you know it can do one feature apart from just animating? As you can see in the gif, it can be set to disappear once a certain level is defeated.

Bird
As you can see in the gif above, the bird just picks around.

Goomba

This Goomba walks around a 2x2 level grid. If interacted with, the player is forced inside a level. If said level is beaten, the sprite disappears. The extra byte controls the event trigger.

Fish

The fish is similar to the Goomba, but in a 3x2 grid.

Erik this is like the fifth year in a row you've shown those sprites.
Well first of all it's not in a row cause I was gone lol. Second, I have updated them so they work with the tool, and also to fix some bugs.

I hope you guys love this tool and that it makes you love overworld sprites as much as I love them. Please let me know if there's any bugs or issues. There will be, I finished it yesterday lol

Here's two normal sprites I developed in 2019 and are only now seeing the light of day. My intent was to show them in C3 Winter 2019 (2020? when I left you know) but I returned a week too late and I didn't show them. They ay very well already exist. Sorry if so.

Amazin' Flyin' Sumo Bro.

(it looks fucked because I set the wrong sprite header 😭😭😭)

Well, for all those years gone, that's all I have to show. I hope you enjoy what I have to show. I was going to do my traditional "code me stuff" thing but I, um, forgot my family had planned to go on vacations this weekend lol
And being serious for a moment, I really have missed being here and interacting with all of you guys. I plan to stick around and be more active, perhaps not as much as previously due to my schedule, but still, I want to retake hacking and coding. I'll see you guys around and thanks to everyone who contacted me during my absence. <3
The legend is back! :O

(Actual comments later)
Welcome back Erik!

The two sprites you showed off look quite interesting (especially the Snow Pokey; I might use it in the snow world of my hack), though I noticed an oddity with the Amazin' Flyin' Sumo Brother you may have overlooked; it seems to have wonky graphics when it's bumped from below, as shown in the screenshot. Are you gonna fix that?

Again, it's awesome to see you're back.
Woah!! This is a huge treat. Not only do you come back out of nowhere, you also come blazing with some nifty stuff.
Overworld sprite stuff really needs to be a lot more accessible to the community at large, so anything that helps with that is a big boon.

How dare you heartlessly dismember that Sumo Bro though

Other Submissions of mine!
Here's a tool that users really need for OW sprite insertion. I know it needs other features added, but if it's headed for completion, then OW sprites must be made for this.

I have no evidence to back this up but doesn't the (original) sumo bro. need a special sprite header? No joke, I only inserted it and checked if it inserts lmao, so it may be the header -- I'll get back to you on that
and thanks for the welcome!!

Indeed, my goal above all was to make people love overworld sprites as much as I do. Whether it means the tool becomes a standard or PIXI absorbs its features is not the end goal; the purpose is to see more overworld sprites around here. And if that happens, I'll consider it a win.

some things just happen like that

And speaking of which, I'd appreciate any feature suggestions!

thanks guys <3

(btw if I'm slow to reply is, cuz as I said, I'm on vacations lol)
Please check out BOWSIE!
Baby, please, would you end your night with me?

My dream finally became reality.
I hope you can get back into coding and make some sick sprites like you always did, and also see more sprites made by the community for this tool so it doesn't get forgotten.
Kirbo was here

No problem!

Yeah, IIRC the Sumo Brother does need a special sprite header, it's 08 (I just checked, considering I've got LM open).

There is a question I forgot to ask though, with the snowball sprite, did you set it up to break if the player throws it and it hits a solid surface? I anticipated it would be as fragile as the SMM2 snowballs, as they tend to break rather easily. In the event you didn't, maybe you could look at the spikeball thrown by the SMM2 Spike sprite, as its shards (when it hits a solid surface and breaks) are custom extended sprites.
All of this looks amazing.

And I have something to reveal. It looks great and all, but some may be asking, "What about the other OW resource, Overworld Revolution from yoshifanatic?".

Actually, I told Erik about its existence not that long ago in an email to him, and honestly, I think it was for the better. He stated he'll take a look at the various methods available and see how it will develop from there. I also knew about BOWSIE's existence weeks in advance from this.

Anyways, great work, as always, Erik.
Your presence here is so much welcome, man~

There's really no better moment to return, as well as no better time to release some goodies. While I myself am no longer into that level of ASM sorcery anymore - at least not practicing it - I really appreciate all the effort put into those little resources.

I still dream with the moment OW sprites will get some more love and even an exclusive section in here once the definitive tool is established. And you seem to be doing a nice job at making this a possibility.
Nice to see you back, Erik! This is a wonderful surprise. I heard you came back last week and thought you just came to lurk then leave forever. Guess my thought was wrong. Hopefully you'll stay again for the long term...

On a similar note, do you remember me by any chance? Back in the day, I used to go by SwagAssMustafa & DaSpongeBobMan and behaved edgily and pestered about ASM issues. Luckily I don't do that anymore!
My Mode 0 guide.

My Discord server. It has a lot of archived ASM stuff, so check that out!

Glad we can FINALLY do Overworld Sprites for real

Have a frost day~
It's so cool to see you back, and I love the look of this new overworld spritetool, definitely gotta try it out!
A new OW sprite tool? YES. I even loved how you replicated the enemy courses from NSMBW with it!

Also, nice job with actually making my private idea of an Amazin' Flying Sumo Bro.
Kinda in hibernation for a while. I hope to be back in full swing soon.
Sprites for Overworld have been somewhat limited in the past, since they weren't very popular and most of the time the user would have to know ASM to program one.

Now with this tool, it's become much easier! I hope that someday this will become more traditional or maybe even a PIXI feature!

Wonderful work,  Erik! #smw{:TUP:}
dude wtf say hi on discord servers 😭

...
This is really amazing! Not only a new overworld sprite tool, but also a few sprites already available, and that you can interact with! That's a quite amazing way to return to the site after suddenly vanishing.

I also love the level custom sprites, especially the snow pokey! There seems to be plenty of fun stuff to do with it.
Yo dude! Welcome back! You may not remember me, but I'm defs glad to see you back, it's been so long!
Hey y'all, Scott here!

いつか『スーパーマリオメーカー2』に登場するスノーサンボを出して欲しいと思っていました。
ありがとうございます!
I was hoping to get Snow Pokey to appear in “Super Mario Maker 2” someday.
Thank you!
Wow looks gratis it reminds me a lot of nsmbwii where the player had to avoid the overworld Sprites, it was my favorite part of that game and i would like to see it replicated in a smw hack
