SPOT - Summer 2024 Showoff

Super Mario WorldStandardWork in ProgressVideos

Hello there! Some of you probably saw or even played the WIP project I shared last C3 called SPOT (or Standard Platforming, Obviously Traditional). For those who didn't know about this hack, this is basically a low-key project mainly focusing about traditional platforming where I put altogether various scrapped levels I made in the last years and new silly ideas that somehow fit in the spirit of 'platforming'.

Since the release of the demo back in February, things progressed pretty slowly: at the time I make this thread, 22 levels are completed for a total of 25 exits. That being said, here's some modest thingies I can show.

The first one is the structure of the game: like any traditional hack, SPOT will have around 7 worlds and a special world where the theming are more or less chosen: the first one being the usual grassland, the second being related to the ocean/sea/water... the classical thing.
The maingame will mostly be Standard: Hard while the lategame and the special world will be more Standard: Very Hard.
As I write this, I still don't know how the overworld will be built (a linear OW? an OW with branched paths? something else??) but time will probably tell.

The second thing is the inclusion of Dragon Coins and 3-UP Moo- *suddently hears people saying that hundreds of hacks already did that* That's obviously true, but I wasn't confident before to implement various patches messing with saving like SRAM Plus. That said, seeing Anorakun's suggestion (thank you if you read this!) motivated me to try implementing said patches, and it turned out it wasn't that difficult!
All the levels having (collected) Dragon Coins and Moons will be shown on the OW as you can see on the screenshot above. Now, what about collecting Dragon Coins (and eventually Moons) in every level? Will they unlock new levels? Will they play a peculiar role in the game? I've some ideas but I'll keep this secret for the time being. ;)

Finally, I couldn't make a C3 thread without a little something: a showoff of a couple of levels. :)

Thank you for passing by this thread (and possibly reading all of this), and please check out the other threads, they have a lot of cool things to show! Happy C3!! :)

It looks challenging and fun at the same time in this case of the overworld, im not asking for it to be well detailed or anything like that, Just a simple overworld but for it to be pleasant for the players eyes
SPOT spotted!! (pun)

Definitely happy to see this hack again, everything new in the showoff video looks like so much fun. I love all the creative ideas and palettes I'm seeing too!

Your plans for the structure of SPOT are cool to know as well, it's making me anticipate the full release even more. There's always lots to consider for the ways that a traditional hack can go, and what you've got so far is very exciting. Especially what collecting Dragon Coins and Moons will accomplish, haha.

Good luck with the rest of your project Nitrogen, hope you have fun with it!
What is a Lunar Magic, and can I eat it?
Looks like some cool setups in the video! Love the style you've chosen. Gimmicks look very cursed but I know you can do cool stuff with them #smrpg{:D}

I'm glad that you implemented the save feature for dragon coins and moons. Even if they don't unlock anything, they feel much more rewarding to collecting now. Anyway, i'm looking forward for the release, it looks like an extremely challenging and fun hack. #smrpg{cool}
