A Brief Visit To Your Uncle's Closet (Demo) + General Updates on Projects.

Super Mario WorldKaizo/PitWork in ProgressDemoScreenshots

What's good everyone? It's me, Jamie (previously Faro). I certainly got a lot to update you all on but first, lets get to the important thing.

YOUR UNCLE'S CLOSET

To refresh, Your Uncle's Closet is a short room kaizo hack. It's basically my own take on the Nightmare Cafe/100 Rooms of Enemies formula.

I don't really have a lot to show for this C3, thats why I decided to throw together what I had for Your Uncle's Closet and release it as a demo of sorts. You can download it right below the screenshots. This short demo contains the first two levels complete areas.

Updates On Everything Else

Alright, lets get to it. I've been spending the last decent number of months figuring out how I need to approach my projects. Quite frankly I've started FAR too many projects and ended up killing all the motivation I've had for working on anything i've announced previously. I've been taking some time and figuring out what I should realistically do and how to handle a lot of these things. On one hand, I do genuinely want to make all of my ideas real for not only myself, but for others to play! But on the other hand it's just not realistic for me to make all of these at the quality I want without seriously hurting my mental health. With that being said...

UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE, EVERYTHING I'VE ANNOUNCED PREVIOUSLY IS EITHER IN INDEFINITE HIATUS OR OUTRIGHT CANCELED!

This is what I must do for myself. I've stressed myself out with all these promises and projects I sincerely need to step back and just refresh myself. A Quick Errand and Your Uncle's Closet are the only two projects I've announced previously I intend on finishing as of now. This is the best step forward for me and my Mental Health, gotta look after yourself ya know?

Good news though, my mental health has definitely been improving, I'm viewing my projects in a better light and its made it a lot easier to just jump in and work on something again. I've taught myself to stop caring about what others think of my hacks and just MAKE. That's how my latest project came to be. You can play it here! As for what the future holds outside of Uncle's Closet and A Quick Errand, im unsure. I have a lot of things I wish to tinker with or try. Like making an SM64 Hack, to outright game development itself. All of the time I set asside for my hobbies regularly goes to my SMW projects and I never try anything else. So as of now, those are the two projects I wish to finish. We'll see after that.

That's all I got for this C3. This was a bit more rambly than I intended but I hope it gets all my thoughts across enough to understand haha. Thank you for taking the time to read my post this C3! Remember to take time for yourself when you need it, drink some water, eat some food. You deserve it. #smrpg{<3}

This thread doesn't deserve to have zero replies! Is this a Kaizo hack with small (mostly) screen-sized, self-contained challenges? If so, I really like the idea! It does remind me of VVVVVV. As someone who doesn't have the nerve to try any hard Kaizo hacks and master long stretches of difficult sections, I'd totally play a hack with shorter, more isolated challenges.

Also glad to read your mental health is improving! Way to go!
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!

Thank you very much man, I'm glad you think so haha! You are indeed correct, thats EXACTLY what this hack is meant to be. I can't say that its gonna be easy cause its definitely still on the harder side of the Kaizo spectrum, but due to the length of each room, it should be much more accessible to a lot more of the player base despite its difficulty! Most of it comes from general difficult platforming too rather than intensive item tricks, although there are a few shell jumps, even in the demo!

And thank you very much again, the mental health journey is far from over but i've made a lot of progress! It's certainly been a struggle but it will be so worth it by the end #smrpg{<3}

I'm looking forward to play Uncle's hack demo, expect some gameplay thoughts in a few days. I love silly lore, so yeah, I'm curious to see how everything unfolds in the finished hack.

And well, no need to rush, as long as you're making progress, it's fine, mental health always come before finishing hacks. Please take care, my friend.

(Premiering on 4:20 PM PST)

So....in the biggest sense of irony ever made, I have beaten the demo. While I definitely have the tiniest bit of experience with Kaizo (played a tiny bit of a few hacks, and made my own stuff), I didn't expect I would beat this since my comfortable spot is Standard...and not even Standard: Very Hard.

The biggest thing to take note of going in is the levels are deliberately ruthless...ruthless, but short. None of the rooms last even 30 seconds in a perfect run, and a lot of the rooms are very self aware in how evil and cruel some of the obstacles are. I didn't beat the game blind; Jamie's definitely shown me what he's made in terms of progress, and I have programmed a couple funny unconventional things. There are also boss fights, and while the first one isn't actually that bad, the second one against
Glendaal from Equinox
is extremely brutal, especially when the boss does it's first attack.

Despite all the trials an tribulations, even being a bit pissed off at the end, I was pretty proud of myself getting through the hack. It's probably the same feeling most people who have beaten a Kaizo hack for the first time, but I'm happy it was this one. I don't think I'll play another one anytime soon (I started playing this on stream as a joke, and not expecting to have...beaten the game outright) but I think I can appreciate the playstyle more.

So....yeah.
