My first indie game in development (it's a metroidvania, but kinda like it was on Atari 2600..so Atariavania?)

This has nothing to do with SMW!

Wtth that out of the way, I present to you my currently in-development indie game project "HeroSquare"

Long wordy story bits:

I've actually dabbled with making a "white square main character" game for a while. I first had this idea, and built a prototype around 2011. My skills at that time couldn't really carry the kind of scope I wanted the game to have, and after developing it for a few months "HeroSquare" got abandoned at that time.

Fast forward to 2020 and having a lot of free time in my hands! I've done quite a bit in game development through the years, but one thing I never did was a fully fledged, released Steam game. So after about 10 years pause, I started building a new prototype for "HeroSquare". This time I made sure focus the gameplay and the scope of the game more, and it started taking shape as mostly a riff on "Adventure" and "Metroid" with some unique mechanics that I dreamed up myself.

I have been making this game now for 4 years. While developing the game we also had both of our children, which has probably set back the schedule by a bit. However I'm also very happy knowing, that the memories of making this game will always be intertwined with the amazing family moments of this time in my life #ab{;)}

The game is now about 80-90% complete with plenty of sweet sweet scope creep. But it's starting to look like I'll get to the other side.
I guess I wanted to post this, since it's the best and most extensive thing I've created, and has if not anything else, made me much better in all my crafts.
Looks cool! I like how there are subtle visual effects added for movement and block edges. You've definitely nailed the retro aesthetic. Congrats on sticking with a long project, and good luck with the impending release!
This looks pretty cool and unique! What follows now is probably a brand new sentence that has never been spoken before, but to me, this game looks like "that one maze game jump scare" meets "Bit Trip rhythm games".

I like it a lot and am going to keep an eye on it.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!

Thank you for the kind feedback! It's indeed a lot of small touches in the visuals that have been added over the years #ab{:)}

Thanks a lot! Actually nobody has brought up Bit Trip games, even though personally I've played them a lot and really like them #ab{:D}
What game engine are you using? Godot?
Give thanks to RPG hacker for working on Asar.

It's a 2D engine called Löve, it's pretty minimalistic, but I really like working with it (not least because it's in Lua) #tb{:j} I recommend giving it a look!

This looks very interesting!
Definitely reminds of The World's Hardest Game in style, but much more flashy and colorful haha. I love the visual style here
The boss fights called my attention as a sort of bullet hell styled gameplay, and from what i understand by looking at the Steam page, the way you attack them is by reflecting their bullets, which is cool
Also, i love the Tetris-like puzzle aspect of fitting in certain areas to make blocks disappear, super clever haha

Thank you for the nice feedback! It really cheers me up to know people can see the various aspects I've tried to bring together in this game, and find it interesting and fun #tb{^V^}
