Platforming Experience Required (release)

Non-Super Mario WorldFull ReleaseVideosTrailer

Hello,

Last C3, I published a teaser for the platforming game I was working on with Godot: Platforming Experience Required. Well, it is now finished!

Here's a short trailer I made for the game:

Platforming Experience Required is a hardcore 2D platform game inspired by the 8-bit era of gaming with an emphasis on creative and varied level gimmicks. Play as Amanda, local locksmith, and help her with a specially difficult service call!

The game is 100% free to play, be it directly on the browser or downloading it (versions available for Windows and Linux). I hope you have some fun with it!

Platforming Experience Required? Hey, I HAVE platforming experience! That's me! Look, it's a game for me!

This looks really neat! I can clearly see the inspirations taken from Mario games, but focussed more on platform challenges than on exploration. The difficulty looks tough, but not overwhelming (from the trailer, I'd judge it above traditional Mario hacks, but below Kaizo hacks). In other words, this seems like the perfect difficulty for me! The visuals somewhat remind me of I Wanna Be The Guy - simplistic, but absolutely serving their purpose.

I definitely intend to give this one a try.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
As someone who had the delightful experience of playtesting this game, I have to say: please give it a chance, folks. #smrpg{cool}

The jump controls and movement physics are very responsive and somehow, a fair amount of things feel similar to Super Mario World, so I felt very comfortable and beat it without much trouble. It feels very rewarding to play and progression is very smooth, in general. The music selection is also quite good.

And yes, this game is very challenging, haha!

I might even replay it after C3. Thanks for making such a cool platforming game, Darolac. #smrpg{<3}
Nice to see this game finally release!

I've been following the development of Platforming Experience Required very closely as one of the main playtesters, and it was great to be involved with it and see it grow to what is now a very polished experience in retro platforming.

This game builds up from a simple foundation of platforming mechanics: walking and jumping is all your character can do. And yet, it expands upon them in a way that feels incredibly engaging and interesting! The physics are tight and feel great to play with, and the simplicity of the mechanics is heavily explored with creative sprite-based mechanics present in most levels. Following along from his two released SMW hacks, Darolac continues to evolve his style of creating heavily customizable sprites and creativity focused platforming levels.

The levels are masterfully crafted to take advantage of the different properties and behaviors of the sprites, showcasing a range of setups that feel clever in their execution, while also being simple in their presentation.
As the name of the game implies, it is a challenging experience, requiring certain precision of movement and mastery of the mechanics to overcome each obstacle. However, the game presents a seamless difficulty curve, which guides the player through increasingly complex challenge and makes for a smooth learning experience. This way it can be enjoyed by both platforming veterans and casual players.

This game was a blast to play and replay! And i will certainly be coming back to it from time to time haha
Awesome job with the creation of this Darolac! And congratulations on the release!

I'm currently at the third chapter, and I can already say it's absolutely fantastic.

The design hits the right spot in every aspect possible in the sense each level introduces progressively new elements and blends them together wonderfully with a clever placement of checkpoints: levels (as far as I got) start with short sections to get used to introduced sprites then evolves into longer sections that felt rewarding to beat with a lot of clever setups (my favorite setups are the ones involving the
back and forth brown platforms going upwards with the player in chapter 2
).

I also love the atmosphere of the game from the lovely handmade graphics to the chiptune music (especially in the third chapter, this one slaps hard!).

As it was already said, I sincerely hope any SMW hacker interested in platforming (standard and kaizo players and creators) will play this and even get inspiration from its design. Thank you so much for making this!

Nice to see more SMW hackers moving into indie game development. Congrats on the release, will try to check this out when I have a chance! :)

Thanks, ECS! Surely you helped the game improve a lot with your feedback, so you have my full gratitude in that regard. I'm really glad I was finally able to tame a bit the hard sections and improve the weak ones with your help.

Thanks for the comment, Anorakun! Actually, there have been some changes since you tried it, so you might be surprised a bit in certain sections if you replay it. The game has definitely improved in the release version.

Thanks, AmperSam. I think, given the style of the game, if you give it a try you will surely like it.
