Tengen Pac-Man

Tengen Pac-Man is an extensive ROM hack of Ms. Pac-Man for NES, specifically the Tengen version from 1990 (not the later Namco/Now Production port from 1993). It aims to recreate what would've been if Tengen made their own port of Pac-Man instead of re-releasing Namco's. There are new maze layouts, new graphics, some of the mechanics recreated from the original and even Plus mode.

Here's the proper description, provided by Andyana Jonseph:

Tengen's Ms. Pac-Man is beloved by both Pac-Man fans and retro gamers alike. With its added multiplayer and maze options, enhancing an already great classic. But I've always wondered why Tengen never made their own version of the original, especially since they published Namco's NES version twice (both via a grey licensed cart, and an unlicensed black cart). This hack aims to fill in that gap. Besides also offering multiplayer and its own unique mazes, it also has a mode based on Pac-Man Plus.

Some things are unfinished. For the ghost AI, only the corner mode has been implemented instead of vanilla scattering. The plus mode is also quite unfinished, especially palettes, if masking tiles being visible to the side wasn't a giveaway. Only the first intermission has been implemented, among other things. But, we've been making steady progress fixing issues and implementing new things.

Provided are two bps patches, to be patched to Tengen Ms. Pac-Man. If one doesn't work, try the alternative one.

This wouldn't have been possible without the disassembly. Which nicely leads us to........

Yep, I disassembled the original game. You could say that I disassembled it specifically for this hack, but having it in general is cool.
Also, I'm presenting it in the same style as yoshifanatic instead of tacking it on like I did it last time.

I hope you're having a nice day. Thanks for checking out!
5 months!?! ngl thought it was shorter than that, either way I commend you! Hopefully it'll lead to more romhacking possibilities!

Nice, Pac-Man needs some more love! Can't wait to try this one out.

As a fan of Pac-Man this is very nice to see!
Sorry to hear that this made you realize you're not much into it. :)

But as far as I'm concerned, nothing beats K.C. Munchkin! #ab{8-)}

So we're running into an issue that's puzzling us...
More info in the Tweet itself of course.
If we can't fix it, we'll just release a *near* final version.

The download has been updated with the newer build. Since I was preoccupied with ASM requests, there's not a lot of changes. A few bug fixes, but, we also did get a new* last strange level's layout with proper animation this time. Groovy, isn't it?

*It's actually based on an earlier layout design, because the amount of tiles updated at once to make that animation was too much for the poor NES.

I also snuck in one more technical fact about the game so it's not mostly just about unused content.

Now that I think about it, 5 months seems to be a stretch. Looking back, the first talks about disassembly we had was in april. At that point I must've started playing the game with the debugger to get as much known code and data as possible before putting it together. 4 months seems like a more accurate estimate... which, may actually be more impressive, since, again, I wasn't rushing to complete it and took my time.

I'll manage, somehow. K.C. Munchkin seems like an interesting game.
This is one of the threads I happened to completely overlook. The hack looks pretty cool! I honestly don't know much about NES Ms. Pac-Man (or Pac-Man as a whole, for that matter - really only have surface level knowledge about the IP), so I'm not sure what all the differences here are, but I'm assuming that all of these screenshots feature content that is, in some form or another, modified or new? If so, I really like the aesthetics on the last screenshot with the animated colors. I can't properly describe it, but it feels like stepping into an arcade at night in the 70s.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!

Pretty much. New graphics, new maze layouts, new cutscenes, sounds, and even a new game mode, you name it. Hence why I called it an extensive one.
