The Brutal Dream Playlist

Eighteen years ago, a ROM Hack was released to the public by a japanese creator known as carol. This user would become well known as the person behind a game filled with crossovers of various media based on their interests. "Brutal Mario" would be the English name chosen for a game about the growing darkness corrupting the titular hero "Mario." He sets out for the conquest of Bowser's Kingdom. However, the dark lands are guarded by foes from across various worlds. Meanwhile, the wastelands of the Mushroom Kingdom soon rise once more from the rubble, awaiting the day to end Mario's tyranny.

This project would be abandoned in 2020.

Four years later on August 14th, Hackjam #2 (the third Hackjam hosted on SMW Central) would be started. Five fans of Brutal Mario decided to shape a world that honors the original story and spirit of the game. That project would become..."The Brutal Dream", or as literally translated, "Dream Brutal King Mario." The goal was not to recreate the game's levels or bosses, rather it would be to harness the same energy of taking games we love and mashing them into the Mario world and physics. It is, to put it lightly, a love letter to a hack that showed us what was possible by carol all those years ago.

This is...the Brutal Dream Team:
- Daizo Dee Von
- EvilGuy0613
- NopeContest
- Big Brawler
- and last but not least, Wakana

Each of us has created one level based off of something we want to create, very much based on games we wanted to adapt in some way. If all goes to plan, you can expect a boss at the end of every level.

This is... insane.

Brutal Mario is still one of my favorite hacks to this day despite how incredibly outdated it is. It just had this certain spark to it with the way it combined so many different franchises together in a way that was both clashing and seamless. My passion for this silly little game is to the point where one of my goals is to make modern ports of songs carol ported for the hack that have yet to be updated. Seeing a modern take on Brutal Mario is a really awesome concept and something to behold tbh.

The screenshots for this look fucking amazing and I can't wait to play it when y'all finally decide to release it!
I'm planning my own modern take on Brutal Mario right now as a fangame for PC, I plan on using Godot but I'm currently practicing programming and hope wye's Super Mario World Recreation in Godot is finished so I can build my own stuff on top of that.
It will have an option between a SPC700 soundtrack or a MIDI soundtrack.
SPC700 uses a library which allows you to play spc files in Godot
Midi will use Godot Midi assuming I already know how to make it work

For the thread itself and to BDT, this looks super nostalgic and interesting, I think many of us here had Brutal Mario as an entry-point into SMW Romhacking. Looking at what you've showed off, the style and feel seems to be perfect to the hack in question. I look forward to playing it for myself C: Good luck!
This hack bring really the vibes and essence of Brutal Mario.

This looks promising & insane, and we couldn't forget say that is very well done.

Good luck BDT.
I'm working on a collab Hack, and we're looking for partners with GFX and/or ASM skills to work with us on Pub Quest For RR. If you're interested, contact me!

Holy fish paste, this is WILD!!! So this is how you can make a Super Kichiku Mario-styled ROM hack using the power of modern SMW hacking tools like PIXI and Asar. Nostalgia overdose incoming!

Also, I wish if you put Bowser screaming "NOOO!! MY ONLY WEAKNESS! DYING!!!" when he gets defeated by Mario during the Final Battle!

Keep it up, guys.

I saw your posts about it on Bluesky, and I gotta say, a Brutal Mario tribute is gonna be FIRE, with all those insane ASM shenanigans abound.

Thanks Tahixham for the userbars this C3!

Holy shit you guys have the Brutal Mario aesthetic/style nailed the hell down. That was one of the first hacks I ever played and I thought it was so awesome, it even helped me get into coding because I wanted to make cool stuff like it did. Some of the gimmicks the screenshots show, like the one right in the middle, look pretty interesting as well. I look forward to trying it out!

gotta make it zsnes only for max authenticity tho
Please check out BOWSIE!
i shouldn't have ever been calling it love.
This is incredibly exciting and I'm looking forward to playing it!
wow this is definitely an epic trip to my nostalgia
I remember Brutal Mario from back then when I first played smw hacks
and have to say I really look forward to playing this .
You guys never fail to impress!

Looking forward to playing the full thing!! I see y'all nailed the Brutal Mario taste very well just from looking at the screenshots, and that's something my nostalgia is craving for. GG!
YOOOOO, I am a fan of Brutal Mario and was expecting somebody to remake it with modern assets like Dynamic X

This is the closest we get, and will be BRUTAL!

Have a frost day~

Working my way through it right now and I have some praise and critique for this hack so far.

First thing's first y'all nailed the Brutal Mario aesthetic perfectly. Love the graphical choices as well as references to franchises I know fuck all about. I like how the first stage is a full on throwback, the second is fully Bomberman themed (which as far as I know was never referenced in the original Brutal Mario), and idk what the third stage is based on but it reminds me a lot of the three castles in World 8 mimicking the three final bosses of Trials of Mana in the original game. The third level in particular has some very impressive ASM that's really fun to play with.

My biggest critique so far is that I did not enjoy the second stage. It's not irredeemably bad by any means and I think the bomb gimmick was mostly implemented well enough, but it was extremely difficult and not in a good way. The level very much felt like a slog to get through with each section being very long with nowhere near enough powerups to match the difficulty. I tried to avoid using savestates but I gave up after dying over a dozen times in the second section because it became very repetitive and I just wanted to see the rest of the game. I found the third section challenging at points even with savestates, especially during the P switch/spring section near the end where split second decisions are life and death which seems kind of unfair toward the end of an already very long stage. I also really struggled with the boss even with savestates because the further along you get things move at such a breakneck pace that it's hard to get a grip on what's going on.

I also really didn't like how the custom tank and fire wheel thing (?) sprites couldn't at minimum be spin-jumped on or killed with the bombs, but idk if that has to do with their functionality in whatever game they were pulled from. Feel free to take these critiques with a grain of salt because other people may enjoy the challenge and I could just suck at video games but I really didn't enjoy it. If you take away anything from this, please just add one or two more powerup blocks per section.

My only other spare critique is that I feel like using some of carol's ports (especially in stage 1) feels a bit too on the nose but that could just be me.

Also I'm stuck on one part but I don't wanna spoil it for those who haven't played so if you wanna go in blind don't click on this!

Past this part you need the key again but unless I'm stupid there doesn't appear to be another one after this and I have no fucking idea how to get the key beyond this point. I tried kicking it up before freezing time but I can't stand on it as it ascends.

Those are my thoughts so far. Despite my distaste for stage two I can really feel the love put into this, I'm sure you guys will score very highly!

EDIT: Found a potentially massive problem.

I tried kicking up the key at an angle so I could jump off it and then have it land on the upper platform but I missed the jump and it flew up there. I couldn't go far enough offscreen to make it spawn back in it's normal position so this is a borderline softlock with the only way to fix this being killing yourself and starting over. I might not be the only one who tries this when playing blind so it's something to consider looking into maybe, idk what to do to get around this tho.
It's surprisingly simple...

Yeah but the key is required again after this point, and like I said unless I'm a doofus I can't find another

there's another one in a chest up ahead that can be only opened with the fairy.

Ohhhhhhhh ok.
I forgot that I had to switch to the fairy to do that, thought I had to progress thru the level further to open that chest. My bad
We did our bugfix update, so that means we're locked in to this current version. It fixed a few softlocks and a crash in Level 2.
