Xulon's Custom Music Thread!

Super Mario WorldMusicResource Release

♡ Welcome to my C3 thread ♡

Hey there! It's been way too long since I've gotten to participate in one of these. As promised I'm here to present the rest of the ports I've been working on to you, I have 12 ports to show off and I'm quite happy with pretty much all of them. Some of these have been sitting around on my hard drive for a while waiting to be touched up and finished, others I threw together relatively quickly, but I'm proud of all of them and I think some of the best stuff I've made to date is in here.

Do note that a handful of these ports aren't currently optimized so be careful if you plan on including them in your hack before they make it to the music section.

Here's what I got!

Alcahest - Panakeian Temple (Unsampled)
Ah yes, the song made famous by Moose's classic port of it. It felt almost blasphemous making this considering how well loved Moose's version is (and for good reason, it's one of the oldest ports that still holds up well today), but I thought it would be fun to make a more up-to-date sounding version of it with slightly different instrumentation and a smoother sound.

deadmau5 - Superbia (Unsampled)
No, this is not an EDM banger. Over a decade ago, deadmau5 released an EP titled 7 which was a collection of seven piano pieces inspired by the seven deadly sins. These tracks got reworked in one way or another into his 2014 album while(1<2). Superbia is my favorite of all these pieces as it's the most eerie yet calming.

Earthbound - Ness' Bike (Sampled)
Not a whole lot to say about this one, I just think it's cute #smrpg{mlem}. I included a version without the bike sounds.

Final Fantasy VI - The Serpent Trench (Unsampled)
Made this port in less than 2 hours. I've always liked this song a lot despite it's simplicity and thought it deserved an umsampled rendition. This would fit well in a water level or maybe a foggy overworld map.

Gakko de atta Kowai Hanashi - Shindo Makoto (Unsampled)
Discovered this song many years ago when I heard the sampled version in a fantastic hack called SMW Piranha Island (shoutout to Nanako for originally porting it). It's a beautiful little piece and it was fun porting it to the SMW soundfont.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 - Ripple Field 1 (Unsampled)
I was shocked to discover the lack of unsampled ports from Kirby's Dream Land 3 in the music section. The only unsampled port of this song I could find was an ancient Japanese port from 2012. That just won't do! I definitely plan on porting more KDL3 songs unsampled in the future, especially since this one turned out even better than I could have anticipated.

Little Nemo ~ The Dream Master - Mushroom Forest (Unsampled)
Lovely little song that was in sore need of an update, since the original port on the website is from all the way back in 2011. Had a lot of fun making this one.

Shin Megami Tensei - Ruins (Unsampled)
I originally released this port many C3s ago in 2019, but the port was unoptimized and I never wound up releasing it. I thought I lost the port to time but I found the thread while digging through my old posts and miraculously someone saved the download link to my port pack on the Wayback Machine. Bless the good soul who saved my ass six years ago! Decided to update the port and make it ready for release.

Snow White ~ Happily Ever After - Unused Song 6 (Sampled)
Found this strange, Amiga sounding song while sifting through random SNES games I could port stuff from. It's not very long or impressive but I thought this song was cool, maybe it could fit a puzzle room or something.

Touhou Eiyashou ~ Imperishable Night - Eastern Yokai Beauty (Light Sampled)
Slapped this port together in one night and then let it sit unoptimized on my computer for months. Now it's here. Lol.

Treasure Hunter G - Go Red Team! Go White Team! Rah Rah Rah! (Light Sampled)
This song was famously used as the Switch Palace theme in Brutal Mario. Ported this song by ear and I also used this port as a test run for how effectively I could use the looped vanilla piano sample in a port. Definitely gonna be using this more in the future. Also I should note out of all the ports shown here this is definitely the most unfinished as I haven't added a lot of volume fluctuations throughout the song.

Undertale - Respite (Unsampled)
Finally, I have this little beauty. Respite was one of the first songs I tried to port in 2017 but I had no idea how to make a piano port sound good back then. Finally got around to properly porting this song and I love how it came out.

Before I close out this thread I would like to leave a little personal note/life update for y'all. You don't have to read this if you don't want but I'm just gonna leave this here.

Well, that's it for now! I'm currently working on some port requests and I may post them here if I finish them while the C3 forum is still open, but other than that I have nothing else to show. Hope you all enjoy what I have to offer here, I plan to hopefully outdo myself next C3 so get ready.
I've been listening to this while browsing through other threads. Great music taste and great ports. Porting unsampled tracks isn't easy and you did a very good job! And there's never enough (unsampled) Kirby music!

Also when I listened to this Snow White port, I instantly had to think about Amiga music too.

(btw I'm glad to have you here Xulon)
Your ports are always so good, I love listening to them. You have a really great ear especially when it comes to unsampled. That Shindo Makoto song is very pleasant and catchy, as well as the Undertale port that sounds very dreamlike. The SMT Ruins update is appreciated too because this port has always been a banger. Also, I had already heard it, but I still really love your rendition of Panakeian Temple.

tl;dr these nachos were made from scratch and they're hitting
gotta say it again: can't believe you actually went ahead and did an unsampled panakeian temple port consdering the legend status of moose. and yet, it turned out so good and it's a neat alternative. gonna be tough picking between the two when it comes to level making, because I've expressed it, that track is a requirement in my hacks.
I was not familiar with the deadmau5 song before, your rendition sounds very calm which surprises me because you say deadmau5 was inspired by the seven deadly sins lol. Still, so lovely! Personally I prefer version 1.
Ness' Bike is so fun with the whistle and the bell ringing sample. Can't see myself using it, but it's great you ported it!
FF6 has some of my favorite VGMs ever and Serpent Trench is no exception. I like how it turned out!
I wasn't familiar with that Shindo Makoto song, but listening to it, your rendition is so peaceful and dream-like... makes me feel like all my worries are erased lmao
Had commented on the KDL3 track when you sent it to me on Discord, it's beautiful how it turned out, very faithful to the soundfount that game uses. I can see myself using it!
While I was listening to the Little Nemo port I felt that I had heard this melody before, and sure enough, your description says there's an old port of it lmao. I don't remember in which hacks I've heard the old port exactly, but this is pretty good.
I definitely remember hearing that SMT port in your C3 Winter 2019 thread. It's surprised I didn't leave feedback on it back then: it's great. Glad to know you could rescue it and bring it back to life.
I can see why the Snow White song was left unused lmao, it bangs but it doesn't seem like the vibe of a Snow White game. It's so intense, that more than a puzzle room I think it could be used in escape sequences.
I remember you showed me that Eastern Yokai Beauty port on Discord. 2hu has so much good music, this track is no exception, and your mostly unsampled (I take it it's only the hi hats you sampled, no?) rendition is pretty great!
That Treasure Hunter G track is very interesting, like, I can see that used in a cantina or saloon area for a Western hack lmao. Impressive that you ported it by ear, it sounds great!
I've been vibing a lot to the OSTs of Undertale and Deltarune lately, so I was surprised to see you ported Respite. It turned out excellent: that being one of the more beautiful (and underappreciated, it feels like!) Undertale tracks.

You think that wasn't enough text? Here's some more in response to your note:

tl;dr: nice
Please check out BOWSIE!
My C3 museum.
wow, that alcahest song seems like an improvement on the port that moose made. I also love listening to that FFVI song with swm instruments.

Thank you! Personally I find porting songs fully sampled harder because so much goes into making a port sound 1:1. I'm amazed at your ability to pump out such accurate stuff on a regular basis. Porting unsampled is easier for me and it's also more engaging because it forces me to come up with creative uses for SMW instruments.

Thanks! I'm not sure how I developed the ear I do for unsampled stuff but the SMW soundfont is extremely malleable and can be applied to so many different types of sounds you could want. It's easily the most fun thing for me.

This is a great selection of songs. My favorite is the Treasure Hunter G, it feels like a song that would play in a black'n white cartoon, for some reason. Ragtime songs are always such a great mood.

Shin Megami Tensei - Ruins is also a classic that I heard in a fair amount of hacks, glad to see your take on it.

Overall, fantastic work with your ports, Xulon. #smrpg{y}
I‘ve listened some of music you posted, yeah, I really love them! Even, some of musics I've intoxicated.

Alcahest - Panakeian Temple has more rhythmic than Moose's early port, ah ha! I could imagine that some of hard level design in JUMP I played
Disco Shell Party and 1F8

Kirby's Dream Land 3 - Ripple Field 1, it makes me feel I must use that song into the beginning of level! Pretty chill

Shin Megami Tensei - Ruins, finally unsample version... it was the same feeling as the listening of Ahrion's sample version, great job!

Touhou Eiyashou ~ Imperishable Night - Eastern Yokai Beauty, hell yeah! MORE TOUHOU MUSIC PORT IS COMING!

Other music I listened were so perfect even they use less of sample, what an amazing optimization! I'll use some of them into my SMW hack project! Thanks!#smrpg{<3}

Nice, nice song,Kirby's Dream Land 3 - Ripple Field 1,Very good song, keep it up
I'm suspicious to talk, but your musical skills are just too great to ignore. I'm unfamiliar with deadmau5 so I can't tell if the port is faithful to the original or not, but you did an excellent job with it. Nice to have you around again!

Also holy shit you did an unsampled version of that banger Alcahest port. The world is set to end right now akin to 2012 (jk). Also Ness' bike port is sooooo fucking cute.
You know your way around SMW samples very well, and it shows; I'm super happy to see many of these ports!

Shoutouts in particular to the Alcahest one especially because it's such a good song, and you did it such justice. Big fan of Ripple Field 1 and Eastern Yōkai Beauty as well!

These port sounds really beautiful, and I am really happy to see you ported them!

I am a big fan of Kirby's Dream Land 3 - Ripple Field 1, by the way.
Thanks for all the love you guys, means a lot #smrpg{<3}

What's really encouraging is that what I have on display here is like, me in a pretty rusty state since I haven't been consistently porting custom music for a few years. By the next C3 my stuff is gonne be even more ridiculous, especially now that ChordBRR is a thing. I only plan to advance and get better from here.
Thank for these high-quality ports, I especially enjoy "Serpent Trench" and "Ripple Field."
I'm in love with your version of panakeian temple, more chill but still with the adequate amount of intensity. lovely work with all these ports xulon

You picked a great and varied selection of music for this thread. Some of them are much-needed remakes of existing ports from over 10 years ago, some of them are completely new, some of them have a little personal history, and especially going back and revisiting your very first port ever and doing it proper justice feels like a real full-circle moment. They all sound beautiful, and I am more than eager to see what it is that you cook up in the future. Well done.

Thanks for all the love you guys #smrpg{<3}

Before C3 wraps up I'm happy to report I have two more ports to show off. These are port requests I haven't been able to get to until now but here they are.

Arcana - Shrine for the Worship of Chaos (Sampled)
Made this one for Big Brawler and it took me a month because of C3 but also laziness lmao. It's a tense song fit for castles or temples or dungeons, maybe other stuff too idk.

Touhou Chireiden ~ Subterranean Animism - Player's Score (Unsampled)
Made this one for Gasterus155. Originally this was supposed to be the Ten Desires version of this song which is in a different key and has drums, but there was no MIDI available for that version so we settled on this one. I love Touhou 11 so this was fun to make even if it's a bit of a shortie.
