Mario Party 8 is a game that I have a lot of nostalgia for, and for some reason this song in particular is ingrained in my head lol.
2. Escape - song 1.mid (Chosen by Exodust)

Internet Archive (PC port)
I would've been seriously surprised if anyone had guessed this. This is from an incredibly obscure and dumb little game that I'd played off of a software CD bundled with a... 2003-or-so Dutch magazine about all things Mac. Well the game came with this (and only this) MIDI tune. It is almost 11 minutes long and it's stuck with me something fierce. For a General MIDI tune, it's quite lovely. The game is deliciously mid, but hey, it's still playable! Somewhat!
3. Another Bible - Carrying Desire (Chosen by icrawfish)
Game guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
There was probably only 2 ways to be aware of this song for any common person. One, be like me and, upon being made aware of the Last Bible series through its soundtracks, try to search some stuff about it and come across this niche little spinoff that was on the same console as the first 2 games. Two, take interest in the composer of Mega Man 1's soundtrack, Manami Matsumae, and delve into some of her other lesser-known works across the years.
Given that Last Bible was already an offshoot of the Megami Tensei franchise (hence the title Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible), this game is technically a spin-off of a spin-off: something that seems very suitable for its niche and easily mistakable nature.
4. UFO 50 - Caramel Caramel - Snack Planet (Chosen by bebn)
Game guessed by 4 people.

UFO 50's soundtrack has an absurd amount of tracks, and despite a lot of the games having some deliberate crust design common to the era, the music goes really hard. Yet I knew I wanted to pick either this song or the Pilot Quest hub music.

I know this from the hit Mega Man fangame MaGMML: Episode Zero. Arguably the best song in the entire game
6. Langrisser I & II - The Sacred Sword (Chosen by icrawfish)
Game guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
I played some of this remake as a byproduct of being a Fire Emblem fan and hearing about the comparisons between the two series. I only got a couple chapters in (I should get back to that some time…) but this song easily stood out to me among the rest. I figured it'd be a bit easier since the song is a remix of one of the songs from the original Langrisser/Warsong on the Genesis, but I guess even then it's still a niche song in the scope of the game's whole soundtrack, so a bit trickier than something like the main theme would've been.
(Fun fact: Someone guessed this as a remix of "Take Care" from Gradius II and I was very confused but, that song actually does sound exactly like the last few seconds of the Langrisser snippet as it was fading out… so funny coincidence there!)
7. corru.observer - The Walls Are Trying To Kill Me (Chosen by Exodust)
Game guessed by Fyre150.
YouTube /
Bandcamp
corru.observer is a free web game that sprung up two or three years ago (the name is also the URL you play it at), and good gosh did it take me for a ride. I should note, though, that it's work-in-progress of sorts: sections are still getting added in "episodes". But in brief, if you like a game that has its focus on an incredibly unique and immersive narrative about aliens among humans, with a side of almost web1.0-style exploration, sudden (solid) RPG mechanics and suddener (and solider) turn-based tactics mechanics, dressed up in the most delightfully wonky and cohesive art, music and script, this is the biggest recommendation I could ever give you. You'll want to keep playing to learn more about these goofy autistic aliens and their technology. I love this game to bits and everything is beautiful. It's also incredibly easy to just have a look at and put down at any time, due to it being web-based.
8. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - The Twilight Realm (Chosen by icrawfish)
Game guessed by 5 people.
YouTube
I figured a Zelda pick wouldn't be too hard, though I picked a more mysterious song deeper into the game. Something about the weird tonality of this while still being very ambient and almost ignorant of tone is very dreamy in a haunting way, and calls back a lot of childhood memories for me… er, of playing the game. Not of being haunted, of course.
9. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King - A Cathedral Town (Chosen by icrawfish)
Game guessed by 3 people.
YouTube
Someone (understandably) claimed this was an impostor, since it is from the live orchestral version of the soundtrack as opposed to the sequenced and synthesized version. While this is true, from what I gathered through gameplay footage the orchestral version of the soundtrack was used in the original PS2 release of the game (at least, in the US version), so I had not considered it an impostor during the selection process due to being sourced from a game. As for the date of when the original Japanese release came out and the Symphonic Suite potentially being released prior to the overseas game release that then used those renditions for the game, or the event that the Symphonic Suite was a different live performance than the one used for the game… well, I hadn't thought about any of that when picking the song; just that the orchestral version played in game in the original non-remake release, so it was a game song.
(All that boring technicality stuff and I didn't mention why I picked the song… well, Dragon Quest music good, that's why. Yes I still haven't played any of the games, I need to work on that.)
10. Micro Mages - Heroic (Chosen by Exodust)

I gotta say, I'm somewhat surprised but also delighted that nobody guessed this one. It even managed to stump the self-proclaimed NES expert, but this is very much an NES title, albeit a recent one, being released (on cartridge!) in 2019. I really thought at least a few of you would get this one, as I was under the impression that it rather made waves. Oh well.
Micro Mages is a delightful run-and-gun platformer with 4-player local multiplayer support. The devs shared a bunch of insight into their development process on YouTube and it's a real treat. Highly recommended!
11. Fire Emblem: Engage - Bloom in the Breeze (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
Did no one else play the latest Fire Emblem game?… Just me? Fair enough… while it's not the most enticing game plot-wise, and is more a celebration of the franchise than its own thing, the gameplay is honestly pretty good, and a lot of the music tracks are fire. It's a shame they'll probably be slept on due to the game not standing out nearly as much, but I hope to try porting something from it some day.
12. Pokémon Battle Revolution - Beta Track (Chosen by icrawfish)
Game guessed by Blue Leaf.
YouTube
Even though I grew up with this somewhat niche entry in the grand scope of the franchise, I don't think I learned of this track until searching up the soundtrack online years later. Judging by the name, this is likely due to the song either not playing in game or playing in a very niche scenario I didn't encounter enough to take note of. But, Tsukasa Tawada remains the goat and this game's soundtrack is criminally under-appreciated so I had to share some of it with you all.
13. LOVE 2: kuso - Nucleus (Chosen by Exodust)

Such a massive banger. The soundtrack for this game, as well as the ones for its prequel LOVE and sequel LOVE 3, are just filled to the brim with tunes that'll make you jam your hams and jiggle your jellies. They're action-packed and diverse, but mostly, they're just so damn fun. They support really fun minimal platformers where you just gotta get from A to B; feels very arcade with how fast-paced yet compact they are. But this tune in particular is the one that plays after the final stage, and after so much fun and focus, it's just the most triumphant, euphoric sound you could possibly be greeted with, and it feels amazing.
14. Wild Card - Desert/Ruins (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
If anyone remembers that port of ALERT! that sincx made for YUMP2, this is that game. Probably one of the most obscure Kenji Ito soundtracks, and this song specifically doesn't even have its own isolated video on youtube, and I had to do a little translation to figure out what the song's title was and open up the original sound file from zophar to get a good rip of it, so it was pretty buried. Maybe this should've been an Expert entry? But it was feasible for someone to track this down if they were a big enough Kenji Ito fan, so I hesitated.

I discovered this game through hearing its file select music in a SiIvaGunner rip, then looking up the game and clicking around on Zophar. This game has a really good soundtrack, and Area A in particular feels like such quintessential NES music, like you've already heard it before.
18. Ripple Dot Zero - Tutorial / Like You Just Woke Up (Chosen by Exodust)
Game guessed by Maniek.

I adore everything composer Simon Stålenhag makes, no matter if it's his art, his stories or his music. Well before he had an Amazon Prime series, a Netflix movie and a TTRPG based on his work, he composed the music for an obscure 2013 Flash platformer game. I admit I've never played it, and only know about it because I am so smitten with Stålenhag's work, but good golly gosh do I love it. Very consistent melodic and harmonic themes, imaginative sample choices, and OH MY GOODNESS it grooves and slaps so unbelievably hard. Every single track is a sleeper hit.
Also shoutout to Metro.Siberia, a 2007 Flash game he also composed the music for and which I featured in the contest three years ago. Go look at this man's art. Also listen to the ambient music he made to accompany said art while you're at it. If you enjoy poignant/enigmatic, alienating retro-futuristic vibes, you'll be right at home.
Goosebumps, honestly.
I swear I'm fun at parties.
19. Fortune Street - Good Egg Galaxy (Chosen by bebn)
Game guessed by 8 people, series guessed by 12.
Zophar's Domain
Easy because everyone knows Good Egg Galaxy, but still requiring a touch more effort since you need to look up which arrangement it is. There were quite a few other Fortune Street arrangements I was considering, but the funniest one was probably SNES Mario Circuit from Itadaki Street DS, which I'd picked during a previous VGM guessing contest, following the exact same thought process.
20. Wii no Ma - Theater Room (Chosen by bebn)
Game guessed by Fullcannon.

Random Wii channels are a treasure trove of really good music, and this one has a loooot of songs in it. I will forever wait for the totally real SSBB DLC channel, Wii Want More, to come out so I can hear its music.
21. Mega Man X6 - Crash Site Ruins (Chosen by JupiHornet)
Game guessed by 6 people.
YouTube
If you can't tell by my profile pic, I'm a big Mega Man fan. That said, the problem with submitting Mega Man songs for a contest like this is that Mega Man is widely known for its soundtracks and most songs from those games will be guessed right away (especially classic series ones), so I decided to go for a song that I never see anyone talk about. X6 has my favorite soundtrack in the franchise and this song in particular is very underrated.

Has there ever been speedcore in the VGM guessing contests? Is now! I really enjoy how many of you refused to believe this is game music, yet quite a few people managed to nail this one. Especially nice seeing as this banger was exclusive to the PSX port of the game. Shoutout to Technoman, this tune's dope as h e l l
23. Machinarium - The Bottom (Chosen by Exodust)

Cue my sigh of relief to find that at least a few of you know this one. I knew I wanted to put this one after the onslaught that is the Doom speedcore tune, as it's in the same key and tempers the adrenaline levels to a significant degree. I don't know if this is true, but how I remember it, Machinarium made viral waves when it released, due to how it originated as a web game, the first of its kind, or perhaps just the first big and well-produced one. And they could not have released with better music. Composer Tomáš Dvořák (aka. Floex) makes the most wondrous, breathing electroacoustic sound tapestries, rich in detail and full of feeling. Whether it's a game soundtrack or standalone music of his, you're in for a story you can live in, can feel in.
24. Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town - Spring (Chosen by icrawfish)
Series guessed by Segment1Zone2.
YouTube
I grew up with this Harvest Moon game on GBA, so seeing this song that was drilled into my head in crusty GBA-speaker form adapted to this remake's new live style is a wave of nostalgia for me. I guess I'm alone here, though, since the only person who guessed the series did so by complete intuition. What I get for using the remake version instead of the OG, most likely.
25. Snoopy DS: Let's Go Meet Snoopy and His Friends - Event 1 (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
Zophar's Domain
This song feels so Peanuts-y. I poked through the entire game's OST to pick a song and it's honestly really cute. I'd love to go meet Snoopy and his friends!
26. Octopath Traveler II - The Harborlands (Day) (Chosen by icrawfish)
Game guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
I thought this one would be a bit easier since the first Octopath Traveler was lauded for its soundtrack, and a lot of the tunes in the new game are even better; but, I'm guessing not as many people have tackled the sequel or heard tracks from it yet, so that may have increased the difficulty. Either way, go listen to this OST now, it's truly amazing.
27. DK Jungle Climber - Bitter Cold Brambles (Chosen by JupiHornet)
Game guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
DK Jungle Climber is one of the first games I ever played, and it's much more niche than something like Donkey Kong Country. The game is a bit of a meme in some of my circles, so of course I was going to pick a song from it for this...the game has quite a few songs that only show up in one stage, and this is one of them (in fact, this one is only in HALF of one stage). Still one of the best songs in the game, though.
28. Riven: The Sequel to Myst (Chosen by Exodust)
Game guessed by 3 people.
YouTube /
VGMdb
Exo picks a Myst tune? Unthinkable! Yet, that is exactly what has happened here. And a few of you picked up on it! I wonder if the Unreal remake released last year had anything to do with it. It's a real work of art, by the way; it built on 11 years of work from fans in the community, and proceeded to not only do the bare minimum of increasing the fidelity and freedom you are afforded within its breathtaking world, but also to enrich the experience in surprising and very clever ways.
Truly, the remake has some big goosebumps moments. And though it also features a small selection of new additions to the original soundtrack, composed by the same composer, I decided to stick to the roots of the original 1997 game, to be nice, but also because that is the music that I grew up with, and that sparked my imagination so.
29. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - Iris Network (Chosen by icrawfish)
Game guessed by 4 people.
YouTube
Funnily enough, I've still never played a Xenoblade game; but, my brother's played all of them and regaled me enough that I kind of feel like I have. Either way, I chose this song because, in all the time my brother was playing this game whilst sitting next to me, I probably heard this song play 2000 times as he went into the menu to change stuff. It became a brainworm enough to the point that I figured it'd be fit for a contest where people who've either played the game or been in proximity of people playing it can both immediately recognize that audio trigger.
30. Geometry Dash - Geometrical Dominator (Chosen by JupiHornet)
Game guessed by 8 people.
YouTube
"But Jupi, Geometry Dash uses songs from Newgrounds! That doesn't count as VGM!!!"
This song was made specifically for the Geometry Dash main game. It counts. I've been in enough music tourneys to know how to argue these points...
31. Progressbar95 - Progressbar95 Theme (MIDI) (Low Quality) (Chosen by bebn)
Game guessed by Segment1Zone2.
YouTube
There's several versions of this song within the game, and specifically high and low quality versions to simulate the song coming out of a crappy speaker, to represent the speaker upgrades you get in-game, upgrading your Progressbar computer!
32. Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight - City Lights (also known as Planet 1, Area 3 or Planet 3) (Chosen by JupiHornet)
Game guessed by 6 people.
YouTube
Anyone who played Nonsense probably remembers that this song played in one of the levels I made for it, Sub Rosa Prison. However, I knew it long before that because of a Mega Man fangame made by my friends called Skullman in: Scooby Doc 4 - The Destroyer feat. Atsushi Onita (yes that is its real title) which uses a remix of it. The composer of Scooby Doc 4, MiniMacro Sound, actually also made the SMW port of it that plays in my level!
33. Jesus 2 - In the Cosmos (in G) (Chosen by icrawfish)
Game guessed by Fullcannon.
YouTube
First, I have to say this… WHY DOES THIS VERSION SAY "IN G" WHEN IT'S CLEARLY IN F?! Sorry… anyways, this is one of those soundtracks from a well-known composer for a very not well-known game; in this case by the composer for Dragon Quest, and you can definitely hear it in some of the styles of certain songs between the two series. I'm guessing the only people who had a chance of getting this were big DQ music fans or general PC-98 music fans (or be like me; get introduced to the crunchy NES version of Jesus 1's OST, learn it's by the DQ composer, and then discover the sequel's soundtrack through that). Either way, very niche, but a nice and quaint song.
34. 偽秘封ナイトメアダイアリー 〜 Comatose Chaos: Violet Detector EX - Schrödinger's Bakeneko (Chosen by bebn)
Series guessed by 6 people.
YouTube
I was considering picking Telepathic Dreamer since I really love that song, but then I thought this would be perfect bait.. You've gotta listen very closely (to that accordion over the lead) to tell it's actually an arrangement of this song. And if you can't tell it's an arrangement, you might think it's the impostor since the original song isn't from a game. And that throws a wrench in your process of elimination!
35. [IMPOSTOR] Sitting Ducks - Main Theme (Chosen by JupiHornet)
Guessed as impostor by 2 people.
YouTube
This is by far the most evil of my picks (to the point where I actually had to do some research for it), and there is actually some backstory to this one:
See, when I was a kid there was this channel I used to watch all the time called Qubo that had a lot of cartoons that were fairly obscure (a lot of them were Canadian shows that are unknown here in the US). One of those cartoons was called Sitting Ducks, and I remember it decently well despite not liking it THAT much. The song here is that show's theme song, and it somehow showed up on my YouTube feed one day; this upload is how I found out that this song was also featured in a Sitting Ducks game, and I think the song is funny so I knew I had to use it for this lol. That said, after doing some digging I found that the show came out about 2 years before the game, meaning that this is not actually a video game song...rather, it's a TV show's theme song that was later ported into a video game. Sorry.

39. Run - Main Theme (Chosen by Exodust)
Game guessed by yoshiatom.

Run was such an insanely popular Flash game back in the day, but it fell into a deep obscurity after its heyday, in spite of two very strong sequels and a great custom-level-sharing feature. As such, I am saddened but not that surprised that we only got one correct guess for this one. Though the guess for Geometry Dash felt very apropos, due to the similar... auto-scroller platformer movement, I dare say? So good on you, but no dice.
40. Path of the Midnight Sun - Test Your Resolve (Battle Theme 1) (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
Someone guessed Fire Emblem on this, and truly I think that's the closest anyone would've been able to get on this one. In truth, this is a song from an indie game that was based on an old Fire Emblem 8 romhack called "Fire Emblem: Midnight Sun". It was a kickstarter that caught my eye years ago due to the story behind its creation, and seeing FE romhackers level up into a full game dev studio, not to mention working with a live orchestra for some of the music stuff if I recall correctly. (I ended up backing it a good amount, but in spite of this, I have yet to actually play the game years later…) I know SMWC enough to know that it has almost no overlap with the FE hacking community save for a few select individuals that were unlikely to participate in this contest, so I knew that this had to be my Expert pick as something that I suspected almost no one had a chance of getting. And it seems I was right! But, hopefully this has opened your eyes to the scope of hack and game development, or something deep like that.
41. Spelling Challenges and More! - Main Theme (Chosen by JupiHornet)

This is a hyper obscure DS game that my mom bought me when I was like 7 because it was educational. I played it maybe 3 times in my entire life
42. The Jackbox Party Pack 8 / Job Job - Vote 3 (Chosen by bebn)
Game guessed by 4 people.
YouTube
I've played a lot of Jackbox, and yet the music always fades into the background for me because I'm too busy laughing at myself for writing "SMW Central" as a Quiplash answer for the 20th time and thinking I'm so funny. Which is a shame, because sitting down and listening to the songs, they're actually very good.
43. WarioWare: Get It Together! - Drawbridge Dilemma (Chosen by bebn)
Game guessed by Fostelif.
YouTube
I have a feeling at least one person will guess Pokémon for this one. Despite WarioWare being a very silly series by design, its musical depth is huge. A lot of the songs are incredibly memorable despite being 4 to 8 seconds long, so when a song gets to be even longer...
44. Doraemon 2: Animal Wakusei Densetsu - Cave (Chosen by JupiHornet)
Game guessed by 2 people.
YouTube
This is a song that I only know exists because a port of it was used in a really old unfinished Mega Man 2 romhack called Rockman Unprecedented. I believe the game it's from was only released in Japan.
45. Luigi's Mansion 3 - Castle MacFrights (Chosen by icrawfish)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
This was by far the most surprising to me. I figured a song from a Mario offshoot franchise would at least get a couple people to guess, but I suppose this song sounds distant enough from what people expect from Luigi's Mansion that it didn't trigger any hairs. Admittedly, I'd be hard-pressed to say I remembered any of the songs from this game too besides the main theme; but I remember taking a liking to this floor's theme when I played through some of the game a while back, so I went to look it up again and figured it'd be a good fit for this contest. I guess I was more right than I had imagined, since I seem to have pulled a real stumper.
46. Freddi Fish and Luther's Maze Madness - Levels 1-5 (Chosen by Exodust)
Game guessed by Fostelif.
YouTube
I don't know what the very first game was I ever played, but this might be it; at the very least, this is one of the very first, and of the time, this and the Myst series are the ones that stuck with me the most. I played a bunch of the Humongous Entertainment games (most of the Putt-Putt, Freddi Fish, Pajama Sam and Spy Fox series), and I absolutely rinsed them. Yes, the fidelity you hear in the snippet is the fidelity you hear in-game: delicious, crusty mono-channel 11KHz 8-bit audio goodness. But below all that crust, rests the most phenomenally understated and underappreciated music. Clearly a lot of love went into it because all the music slaps, in the wistful yet wonderful way that only nostalgia can.
47. Sonic Jam (Game.com) - Flying Battery Zone (Chosen by bebn)
Game guessed by 3 people.

I wonder how recognizable the butchered Flying Battery Zone melody is in this. I think more games need absolutely off-the-charts crusty versions of their soundtracks.
48. Blasterball 2: Revolution - Secret Stage (Chosen by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
YouTube
The good old days of buying an HP Pavilion family computer and actually interacting with the bloatware that comes preinstalled on it. How we take our HD audio for granted nowadays, because I do not remember the original game's audio sounding so crusty back in 200X.
49. MadWorld - Look Pimpin! (Chosen by JupiHornet)

Not too often that you hear a relatively mainstream, radio-friendly sounding rap song in a video game. Not only that, but the song is actually really good.

This is some mobile game I downloaded I don't know how many years ago, and it's obscure enough that I couldn't find the music for it anywhere; I had to screen record my phone and get it from there!
