Really??? I'm the
place standard level?? That's extremely unexpected!! I'm so glad the judges enjoyed what I made! Thanks so much for the positive scores! It feels like merely typing out thank-yous and compliments aren't enough. I've been pretty stressed out over things IRL the past few weeks, so that's what's been occupying my mind lately. Seeing these results is definitely a pleasant, unexpected surprise. I'd like to extend congratulations to the top standard level makers, and congratulations to the top OLDC Kaizo entrants as well. The idea of building a kaizo level under OLDC rules sounds nuts, but there were people brave enough to try.
I'm actually still in the middle of my own OLDC (standard) playthrough right now with the intent of publishing my own ranking, but my playthrough is slow due to issues IRL. I've played 22/38 levels so far, playing them in a randomly generated order. Some of my early favorites include:
• Robinson Annulation
• ANGUISH OF THE PAST
• sculptor's trap
• Why Weird Wasted (It's called YOSHI'S ISLAND 1 in-game)
• MIND PALACE 1
I'm pretty surprised to rank higher than those. Before my own personal ranking is finished, I want to give my kudos to those levels. I haven't played the levels that got 2nd and 3rd yet, and I hope my personal rankings from here on out aren't too colored by me briefly looking at the results lol.
To write a little bit about my level, I felt like I made a pretty okay level when I submitted it, but I ended up having to rush the level towards the end. I spent 4 days on the level, with 3 days on the first half, and the second half was put together in the last 5/6-ish hours on the final day of the submission period. I wasn't expecting to even get into the
I left a few of my level design ideas on the table. I wanted to have more than just one "reverse Banzai Bill ambush" setup, but it was hard to build setups that actually worked. Banzais were not programmed to appear in levels where you travel right-to-left. Riding a number platform was the most consistent way I found to get a "reverse" Banzai ambush if you count it as such, and that ended up being the only reverse Banzai setup in the level lol.
Some extra thanks:
lolyoshi's old video,
VOMITSPIT made me think about the idea of a reverse number platform section.
Daizo Dee Von published a video of his OLDC entry early into the contest submission period. It's clearly marked as OLDC, so it shouldn't have spoiled any of the judges. When it popped up in my Youtube subscription box, that's actually what made me realize that another OLDC was being hosted. As an aside, I also like the quick breezy gameplay of Daizo's level.

GGs everyone! I've played plenty of these but didn't finished all, still give plenty of vanilla ideas I've never heard.
Yours is the Why Weird Wasted level, right? I thought that was a really cool level, turning glitchy platform behavior into understandable gameplay gimmicks.
